Does anyone know of an Irish store selling Nikka from the Barrel Extra Marriage?

Long story short I retired recently and have managed to incorporate some nice whiskeys into the celebrations .My colleagues got me a nice engraved bottle of Redbreast 12 and I also picked up a Redbreast Cask Strength 12 from SuperValu (€105-110 ?) .

I’ve decided to keep the engraved bottle as a ‘perpetual bottle ‘ whereby one put a certain amount of every bottle they drink into it the idea being that it retains some of the ‘goodness’ of everything that goes in .

So with the aid of a funnel and jug I tipped the dregs of the Triple Triple into the space vacated by some early sips of the RB12 after having decanted half the RB12 into the empty Triple Triple bottle .I also poured a generous few measures of the RB12CS into my new ‘perpetual bottle ‘ .

I was curious to compare ‘diluted’ RB12CS with its basic stock abv brother .I was pleasantly surprised

I have four glasses in front of me here

    ’Fledgling Perpetual Bottle ‘ , diluted RB12CS , RB12CS and stock RB12

The first is nice , very nice quality stuff .The second is very pleasant .I haven’t been too particular about the water to whiskey ratio but have tried a couple of tastes of it at say 30-42% abv approx ( maybe even a bit weaker at times ) It’s smooth and may even reveal some other tastes while loosing the peppery bite of the CS .I haven’t to say though that the stock RB12 is the ( early ?) winner .Initially having a quick taste or two a few nights ago no was a bit disappointed .But this was due to the classic negative palate factors of recent full heavy meal , bit stressed etc

Many say RB12CS is RB15 at 10-15 quid cheaper but the CS is very peppery and has big oily mouthfeel .Sure you have the dilution potential if in a budget but stock from the bottle the 59% abv is disguising or overwhelming the Sherry bomb flavours .

I think I had the RB12/15/Lustau minis set not so long ago and the 15 was by no means my fave

I had a browse through the latest edition of the Whiskey Bible and the author said RB12CS was the best at its price point but I’d say Lustau is if you like a serious Sherry bomb or otherwise RB12 is still a timeless stone cold classic

Tempted to pick up the four pot still minis set especially for the Barry Crockett but not sure I could justify a full bottle even though I’ve kinda dreamed of it for a decade or so as a retirement treat .

Are there guidelines for perpetual bottles re percentage addition or do you just put in more of the good stuff and less of the cheap stuff in general ?

    Anyway , Slainte !

Night Two of this tasting sequence has been livened up by arrival of the Middleton Pot Still minis quartet .I’m only having fractions of a measure each .
First thing I did was try the RB12 from the minis set and compare it with the one I’d already received .I felt there was a noticeable difference and a blind tasting ( my Mrs doing the sleight of hand !) suggested I was right .The one in the engraved bottle felt ‘better’ ( more mouthfeel , stronger , richer flavours ) than the RB12 in the minis set .( At least based on a sample size of one tasting )

    So my 1-8 is now

1 Barry Crockett - mandarin , angel drops , heaven

2 ‘Diluted’ RB12 Cask Strength - REALLY starting to get into this so much so that I’m No longer going to drink the neat contents of bottle .Having been a big fan of cask strength Sherry bombs like Aberlour A’bunadh and Glenfarclas 105 I genuinely think I may never go back to them again

3 RB12 engraved distillery product ( not the Ltd Ed 10 , the 12 as in standard shops )

    4 RB12 from minis set

5 Perpetual bottle ( in fact these are called ‘Infinity bottles ‘ I now read elsewhere ) With a generous drop of all four mini bottles and a good sup of filtered water ( the CS portion was still biting ) this is really coming along nicely

    6 RB12 CS neat

    7 Johns Lane

    8 Green Spot

    Slainte aris!

I was given a bottle of the standard Glenfiddich ages ago, and it sat on my shelf unlooked at as my memory of it was that it wasn't great. Finally ran low on standard sippers so thought I'd open it, and the cork was dried out and fell apart in the neck. Had to filter it out into a different bottle, at this point I was close to pouring it down the drain

...but, despite all of that, it's actually fairly decent! Not the best, like, but a very solid 6/10

    —-

Quite intrigued by this perpetual/infinity bottle idea, might have to try that...

I like the standard Glenfiddich for lighter, more refreshing drinks, like whiskey and tonic or lemonade.

yeah I often throw Glenfiddich into a cocktail or with some Ginger Ale or whatever, it's grand for that

€30 for Power's Irish Rye, Black Barrell and Three Swallow in SuperValu. Which would be the best value would ye think? I know it's a personal preference but which would be regarded as the better of the three?

Pick up a Supervalu catalogue... next week even cheaper. Three Swallow at €25 is hard to beat but as you say, lot comes down to personal taste as they are all good whiskeys in their own way.

Supervalu deals from the 18th - 24th June:

    Powers Three Swallow €25
    Paddy Share €25.97
    Jameson Black Barrel €28

I'd probably go for the Three Swallows, and then the Rye.

Went for the rye. Haven't had it before.

It is great in an Old Fashioned, if you are a fan of those.

Think I've posted the same thing here before, but no real harm in repeating myself. I remember reading the tasting notes on the Powers Rye when it first launched and thinking it all sounded too good to be true. Then I tasted the stuff and it was almost like drinking a neat Old Fashioned with no ice. It's really good, especially when on sale.

Ordered a bottle online. Let’s see if it gets caught for customs.

Three Swallows for me, picked up a Bushmills 10 and Bulleit in Tesco yesterday, two bottles of Three Swallows next week will be the end of my purchases from the big boys for a little while but incredible value at €105 for the 4 bottles.
Trying to spread the love and pick up some bargains from the small distilleries too, open to suggestions for maybe 2 to 3 bottles totaling €100 to €120 that are good value right now.

Good idea trying to support the smaller boys at this time, but I never find them at that 25-40 price , likewise id love to see some suggestions.

Not rigid on price and don't necessarily need it to split evenly, a Busker Single Malt at €40 could leave €80 for something else. I looked at a Sexton Single Malt earlier but looks like it's a Proximo brand so misses the brief.

Still haven't tried the rye, must pick some up

Like everyone says, personal taste but the Three Swallows doesn't work for me. But at those prices I think the Paddy's Share is very nice

Got my dad the Croithlí Single Malt for his birthday (as they're local) and we opened it tonight. It's decent but not amazing. Bit fumey on the nose, maybe because it's young. Quite thin initially, not a lot of flavour, then quite a peppery finish, though a little one dimensional. I don't think that's a recommendation, is it? 🤣

It's definitely not bad, but not worth €50. I also feel they're being borderline misleading on their website when describing where it's from, it's not their own liquid yet

This drives me mad about Crolly. I had th pleasure of trying their own stuff and it was class, but they're doing that inaugural nonsense in fancy bottles and not keeping it real at all. Hopefully that will change

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,636 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

How do you know the Single Malt is not their own liquid?

The website is a bit vague alright, talk of "crafted" in Donegal, which is not a good sign.
But then it mentions traditional direct fire distillation which would be their own still.

I had seen some marketing stuff which mentioned "distilled and produced entirely" in their distillery, but that's not on their website at the moment.

I don't know for sure, the website said "Distilled, matured and bottled on site." but that's been removed now. The bottles that just arrived only say matured and bottled in Crolly. I emailed them to ask but no reply

You're probably right, reading between the lines.

And I thought so too i.e. earlier it was pitched as being distilled there.

That is a bit of a bait and switch.
I hope some at least of their own product is in there but maybe they supplemented it with sourced.

Had to order from France to get the Extra Marriage version. Did you manage to find a bottle locally?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,122 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

I live in Spain. So yes :)

What did you end up paying?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 498 ✭✭Tech_Head

Paid €66.50 and bought a few things so shipping was free at least. Regular version goes for between €55-60 here.

Has anyone done the Crolly Distillery tour? I'll be up that way at the weekend, is there anything to make it stand out as an experience?

This place, Millesima. They shipping times say up to 3 weeks so looks like they do bulk deliveries with their freight company but all went well. Bottles were packaged up nicely so even the outer/gift boxes were in good condition.

I did it but I am friendly with the head distiller Julio, so it was a bit more of a personal tour for us. Wouldn't say it particularly stood out to be honest, but it's a nice old building. They have direct fired cognac stills and they only double distil, so they are probably the main point of differences compared to most other distilleries.
