When you say knocked out the Zappi, do you mean the breaker, a fuse, or that it broke the unit entirely?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 806 ✭✭✭glen123

It tripped the breaker. When I plugged in the car again, it wouldn't charge and tripped the breaker again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 304 ✭✭cromelex

Thanks for the clarification. Just wanted to make sure I didn't risk both cars.

Any issues with the alarm for anyone? Only a week old and no issues until last night when the alarm went off 3 times in 5 minutes, went out and opened and closed everything and didn't go off again but can't see that anything in particular would have been triggering it

Mine, just this evening, has started a whirring noise (from the front left under the bonnet) when I plug it in. From a bit of online searching, it appears to be the "3-Way Coolant Driver Hub". It sounds like the current hot conditions might be putting a strain on cooling the battery for charging but regardless of that it shouldn't be making that sound and should be replaced. Anyone have this issue before? I'm going to try plug it in again later when it cools down and hopefully it won't be an issue. And hopefully it will charge alright.

Was the coolant driver hub replaced on your car in a recall? I'm wondering if this is a replacement breaking or the original.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,208 ✭✭✭Bacchus

No recall on ours. I've sent a recording on to the garage anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,208 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Garage got back to me. "Don't drive it". Breakdown assist towing it this afternoon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭dcme

It's the 3-way coolant valve - I had that issue a few months ago but the garage told me it was ok to drive. It took about an hour to replace.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,208 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Sweet, thanks for that. Fingers crossed I'll have it back tomorrow so.

TBH, I think they were just playing on the side of caution with me not driving it… which is fine by me. Rather that than something else go wrong with it due to me driving.

Confirmed that it's the 3-way coolant valve. Hyundai have only this week started putting out a recall on it. So the bad news is, every garage is trying to get them in, so I'll be waiting for that to be delivered first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,141 ✭✭✭xboxdad

Do I understand this correctly: This is a different issue from the coolant driver module hub? ..as that one was replaced in a recall months ago and there is no new recall showing against my VIN.

So 1st the hub, now the valve..?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,208 ✭✭✭Bacchus

No idea TBH sorry. I've had no recall on my Inster. This issue just happened and the garage quickly confirmed it's the 3 way coolant valve, for which there is a recall in place so I could be waiting for them to get their hands on the replacement part.

It really lasted only 3 more weeks.

I've yet to get any warnings on the dash but over the last couple of nights I couldn't get it to charge at all.

Dealer was booked for today, was able to drive in and currently waiting. Let's see what they say.

Is it just me or is this piss poor for a new cheap ev from an erstwhile cheap reliable company with 10 years history in the EV space?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 304 ✭✭cromelex

Dealer is replacing the ICCU. They can get a new part overnight so it'll be ready tomorrow which, honestly, is quite decent.

Inconvenient but it is what it is, at least it'll be fixed (for now).

I've asked and the warranty on the ICCUs has apparently already been increased to 8 years, was told they were going to get that confirmed for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 806 ✭✭✭glen123

ICCU failure gave no errors in my case. It just stopped charging completely one day.

I believe the publicly announced increase in warranty for ICCU is for older cars out of warranty, nothing mentioned for newer cars in warranty. The new unit still has the same issues and will probably fail eventually.

jesus, i know someone that recently bought one of these, hope this iccu issue doesnt occur for them, lovely little car though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,208 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Has anyone who has been charging at 90% had the ICCU issue? I've been doing that since January (we're just shy of 15k on the clock). So far no issue. No idea if that's just luck or if it's actually helping or not.

As far as I know, with the existing 5 year warranty, no cars would have been out of warranty yet. So I would expect it to apply to all. I need to get that in writing from the dealer for clarity.

I only dialed it back to 90% once I started having issues (ie, charging speed slowing down to 1.5kW), but I suppose that is a different question to what you are asking.

They probably rushed it to production to meet demand. Made sense with likes of the ID.Polo coming to eat it’s lunch

I've been warning people here for quite some time of the ICCU issues in Kia and Hyundai cars. People giving me stick over it and saing the Car companies are sorting it. Yes, they're replacing sick parts and extending the warranty but, THEY ARE NOT FIXING THE PROBLEM. Anyone thinking of buying a Kia or Hyundai EV take note.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 818 ✭✭✭mr chips

I asked this in another thread, but maybe this one is more appropriate - does the ICCU problem affect all of the more recent Kia/Hyundai models, such as the EV3 and EV4, or is it limited to a specific subset? One comment I saw on another forum (myenergi) says all Kia models are affected apart from the Niro - which would be good for me if true! - but it's just one comment. This SITE aims to log fault incidences of failure from around the world, but only lists the following models:

    Hyundai - Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Ioniq 9, Inster

    Kia - EV6, EV9

    Genesis - GV60

I reckon it is too early to say if EV3/4 are affected. They and the Inster are 300-400V nominal cars like the Niro was. Let's hope a solution has been found as this 5+ years of no permanent fix for the problem seems almost unbelievable.

I've just been confirmed to get a new Hyundai Inster Elegance. As part of the governments EV scrappage scheme, confirmed today.

As a soon to be new Hyundai Inster owner, asking other owners, what are the main things I should look out for / keep an eye on / be aware of / purchase as add on? etc

Just got mine back from the garage. The replacement part arrived on time yesterday and it was ready for me this morning. Annoying that it had the issue in the first place, but can't fault the service and glad to be back on the road.

@rosmad congrats. If you're new to EV in general, I recommend spending a bit of time when you first get it, figuring out your preferred setup w.r.t. auto brake and the paddles. On my day one I did not enjoy driving it (particularly parking), it felt counterintuitive what it was doing, until someone here pointed out trying out those two things. Other than that, I don't think there are any tips or tricks. We took out the shelf in the boot. It's pointless and eats into the space.

On what to watch out for. The ICCU issue. I've set ours to charge at 90% (and charging TO 90%) as has been recommended here before, in the hopes that we never encounter the ICCU issue. We had the 3-way valve issue (as you can see in my recent posts). Now I have it back, I think I could have spotted the issue before it happened. So… for a couple of weeks before it failed, there was a slight hum/whirring noise in the background. Almost like the sound the car makes anyway when it's driving but it was an extra noise. I couldn't figure out… was it always there and I only just noticed it, or was it new. Anyway, now the car is back, that noise is gone. So… if you ever hear a new, subtle enough, hum/whirring sound… I'd be getting it looked at.

Main thing to look out for from my experience is the big blind spot over your right shoulder. The pillar is very wide and you really need to make an effort to make sure there is nothing there when changing lanes.

I've had mine for 6 months and love it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,183 ✭✭✭cobham

The pillar bothers taller drivers who sit further back. I am short so no problem and would rely on mirrors.

ICCU replaced, picked up the car this evening before they closed. So not even 2 full days. Can't fault the service, and happy the they were able to turn it around this quickly.

The car was returned with the charging speed still set to 100%. I think someone had mentioned before that their dealer had changed it to 90%?

I'm now undecided on whether to dial down the charger to 30A (from 32A). On one hand, I shouldn't have to, if it dies again then there's something clearly wrong even with the new units; on the other hand, the difference is minimal and it might save me the hassle in the long run.

(30A is roughly 93%, but when the issue first showed up, it still charged without issues at that limit).
