Im hoping they don't. Would like to see us work on stuff next year without many gone to Farrells team.

I don't believe in Farrell whatsoever

On other matters I think Leinster will probably not win this weekend

What has not believing in Farrell got to do with having your provincial player selected to represent his country?

Good job we dont have Steve Borthwick then isn't it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

If your comparing Farrell and Borthwick the there is nothing positive about that. I would be happy if Farrell just focused on Leinster until 2027

I'm not surprised if Lancaster aims the position of Borhtwick earlier than people expect.

While the Irish head coach ain't easy the English job is a proper poisonous job

I doubt many other international coaches would have seen what Farrell saw in Hansen after 9 club games for Connacht...he went on to start 4 6N's & 2 tests v NZ that year.

He developed Osbourne into an able deputy for Keenan...which nobody saw coming.

You think Bohan & Murray wont be better players for being in Ire camp surrounded by a higher level of player than at provincial level?

Don't engage. It's better for your mental health. Honestly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,988 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

    I cant see that happening.

He gets a bit choked up here (2min) when he's talking about how his family were made feel welcome in Ireland "it was tough after the WC".

He must be kept in Ireland at all costs.

Farrell is a great coach but no I don't think players will improve by being in the Irish setup. They'll improve given game time but not by much. You are facing teams full of internationals in the Champions cup every year, some of those teams are even stronger than international.teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,085 ✭✭✭50HX

At the business end of the CC opposition teams would have more internationals than not...granted.

I fail to see how being in a test camp environment cannot improve a player.

The standards are higher, the game is quicker as a result decision making & execution has to be faster.

If you are not deemed up to test level standard you are given work ons & its up to the player to bridge the gap ultimately improving them as a player imo.

Some have it straight off, others get there by being able to improve & others ultimately fail.

In Japan, Toyota Shuttles rugby announced some leaving players. Jack Dunn is not included in the list of them, so it is sure that he remains in Japan. And the information and rumor about Cormac Daly is nothing now. At last, if rumor of Etienne Oosthuizen finish a false rumor, who will come to Connacht? When Connacht fight at C.C they need another D. Murray imo.

On the other hand, U20 Ireland won Scotland U20 in the friendly match, there are 6(possible and fixed) Connacht players. As the starters, G. McGuire, D. O'Connell, D. Ryan and as the off the bench, A. Cooper, C. Keane, S. Walsh. I don't know who can remain in the last squads, but very interesting.

Was interesting to me that after the Glasgow bulls game yesterday John Barclay was talking about Glasgow still being in the market for new players, so looks like teams are doing business a lot later than previously as witnessed by no definitive news on Lowe's future. In the past regardless of whether he was leaving or staying that would have been confirmed weeks or months ago.

There won't be an NIQ signing at lock as we already have four NIQs: Ioane, Gilbert, SHL, and François van Wyk.

Apart from Daly, Matthew Dalton is the other IQ lock known to be available and it wouldn't make sense to sign them for the sake of it IMO. If we hit a bad phase of injuries we may have our arm twisted and have to get a medical joker, but until then, we work with what we have. We can keep the budget available other opportunities may arise. A loan from another province is also a possibility.

There is a lot of excitement about David Walsh in the Academy. He's 6'7 and has reportedly been exceptional for Galwegians. Some of his peers expected him to get a Senior appearance this season. I would favour leaning into him at this point, and trying to recruit further locks into the Academy.

The new intake should be announced by the end of June. In addition to the new levee of players form the U20 etc it is also expected that Leinster will release at least one lock from their Academy early.

That's my thoughts as well. Intake to the Academy and maybe a young lock from Leinster academy either being released or looking for a faster track.

Until then its Prendergast to lock in an emergency

We had a good end to the season and our locks weren't a problem. I don't think we need to worry about anything other than depth for now.

Shocked and horrified by such an assessment. I will not sleep easily tonight

This year has been a strange year. I have traveled abroad to see Connacht play. But in all honesty it was more about a long weekend in a nice place. And pretty much we lost these games and the players were great in hanging around and showing their appreciation.

But the Glasgow game was different. Where before the lads were ok with being defeated they are not like that anymore. They were clearly upset losing the game and I like that a lot. Lancaster take a bow again. As a supporter I like this winning mentality

If I have a concern for next year it's at 9. I liked Ben Murphy and the Matt Devine swap this year. Next year we have Caolin and Colm and a new member. I'm not convinced. Shame Matt decided a bit too early

Lancaster interview on the latest 42 podcast. I dont have a link but try and get one because it is brilliant. I cant emphasise !BRILLIANT! enough!

Well worth an 1hr of your time. He's Insightful and very clear at what Connacht are doing and how they went about coaching this season (training, meetings, games, post games).

He talks about what they did in Pre-Season: Core Skills, Multi phase attack leading into strikes and how we build, Red Zone. Then next stage was Defence: Layering of defensive system, Importance of the backfield, defensive width, spacing and ruck decision making.

How they prepared for the mindset for knock-our rugby. How to adapt in-game to scenarios. e.g. Plan A isnt working. They review other games with the players. e.g. England 6N game (Whats gone wrong, why, Look at the body language, no eye contact between players, how do we regain momentum -simple plays). Trying to grow the IQ of the player group, scenario planning.

'Competence into Confidence' for Players e.g. Prendergast - when he went into Ireland camp the could see the change in him.

Frawley (confirmed what we knew -hes playing 10) and that Carty thought he would be a good fit. That if he's touring in July with Ireland he'll not be back until Mid Aug (And not allowed to play until Round 3 of URC). Ioane and Naughten will therefore run pre-season.

IRFU - Support given to each of 4 provinces to develop pathway - Connacht used it on depth/quality of coaching beneath the Under-18s. Jarrad Butler is coming in to fill this role.

If you are not already a Connacht fan, this interview will convert you! Cant help but admire a coach like Lancaster. Comes across as someone who is at ease with his himself, his capabilities, eager to share his knowledge and love of rugby.

U20 Ireland for World championship in Georgia was announced. From Connacht formally 5 players was selected. Adam Cooper(LHP), Charlie Keane(FL or NO8), Diarmaid O'Connell, (FL or NO8), Daniel Ryan(WTB), Sean Walsh(CTB). And 2 more players have been said possible Connacht come-in. these will make me be exciting. And I think that it's impossible, if Leinster release Alan Spicer, can Connacht hire him? (maybe NO)
