Holy sh*t, that's an awful shock. This one hits a bit close to home, his home place is about a mile away from mine and we went to the same school, though I didn't know him personally. Shocking.

38, so sad. His poor family. RIP, a character and gave great insight to the fight to get to that level.

Very sad to hear this news. He had buckets of talent as well as charisma. 38 is really no age at all.

    Oslo diamond league startlists

    https://share.google/FJ9AaxjaZbxmfxgei

Third diamond league inside 7 days!

Men's 800 with Arop, Wanyonyi and Lutkenhaus and of course Mark English should be a good one. The men's 5000m has a very deep field so a fast time could be on.

Virgin Media 2 / BBC Three from 7pm!

Coscorann racing the mile should be interesting. Nuguse in that one too aswell as Hobbs.

1:42.08 PB and world lead for Lutkenhaus. Almost got pipped by Wanyonyi, but managed to hold on. Scary to think of what kind of shape he could be in by the time LA rolls around.

what happened Mark English? Wasn’t watching but saw he’s a DNF

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭BP_RS3813

Pulled out at 400 I think?? Wasn't paying too much attention looking at the front but only said to myself where is he at 600/650m.

Anyone know exactly when he pulled out?

Not a bad result from Coscorann.

Just about half a second of his PB.

There was a minutes silence for Ciarán at a BHAA 5k race in Cork this evening, a nice geature. RIP.

Maybe disappointed to come 8th but 3:49.68 - that's a new Irish record no? Ray Flynn's Mark was 3:49.77, also in Bislett Games in 1982.

Very sad, he was a Boardsie too, i had a few messages from him n the back of this thread back then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭BP_RS3813

No, he ran 49.28 back in Feb of 2025.

If your looking at the Irish mile all time top 10, Coscorann is now 1 and 2, Ray Flynn being 3.

Coscoran is 1, 2 and 3 now! He ran 3:49.54 this year indoor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,336 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

The NCAAs are on currently. Some of the results are mad every year, but last night takes the biscuit: Ja'Kobe THARP 12.75 +1.0 in the prelims of the hurdles!

14 year old WR swept away! His previous pb was 13.01. And he's still only 20.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭BP_RS3813

Good catch - thanks for that!. Didn't know that - although I was just talking about the outdoor track.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭CONSI

Gout Gout seems like the occasion got to him last night but he looked very awkward out of the start. Interesting so few of the Irish ladies show up at these diamond leagues, across all the distances. Think Sarah Healy is the only one I know of that ran in any Diamond league this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭BP_RS3813

As you say, the results can be mad although year on year they are hit or miss.

There are some prodigy's within there that will move up to Seniors because what 17 year old can run 1:42? (Know Lukenhouse is not NCAA but making a general reference to US college and highschool running in general plus had Lukenhouse not went straight to Senior I imagine he would be competing in the NCAA)

Jane Pedengren is running 14:4X 5k's at just 18 with having a 8:34 3k. Thats easily good enough for the diomand league circit.

Her and Rhasidat are the only ones good enough to get invites. Sarah Lavin used to. I remember Becker and Healy running in the same 400m in Rabat (or maybe another African DL that was struggling to get athletes in)

For 800 or lower you basically need to be a potential world finalist to get an invite. Easier from 1,500 up but we don’t have any real contenders currently

Obviously agents play a part too, but there’s no one that can saw they’re being unfairly excluded IMO

What's happening with Sarah Lavin this year? Will we see her any time soon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭BP_RS3813

Exactly, even then Rhasidat is a maybe for this season as she hasn't had the greatest last year. There is no telling if she is in low 49 or mid to high 50.

Becker and Mawdsley both a good second off being good enough to compete.

Other then our 400m runners and Sarah Healy (middle distance). We have no one else near world class to get in.

Even then our 400m team is only 'world class' when it comes to the European Relays. Outside of that we don't really have a chance.

Jodie McCann's 5k PB is 15:20 which is about 30 seconds off the required standard I'd say. You'd want sub 4 for 1500 and hers is 4:08.

*not sure about Lauren Roy - her PB set recently is 11.03 which would would be good enough for 100m anyway.

Only Wooden, Jackson and Hunt(Who only recently broke 11) are running sub 11 so Lauren could compete.

Maybe a little harsh on the relay team? 4th in the Olympics, .2 seconds behind the Brits...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭BP_RS3813

Possibly although my general point was that we don't exacty have Diomand League level athletes.

Was more so trying to get the point across that the question/statememt of 'Interesting so few of the Irish ladies show up at these diamond leagues, across all the distances' wasn't exactly a great one.

They don't just choose not to show up. If they were invited/could then they would.

You can count on one hand how many athletes would be good enough (Lauren Roy, Rhasidat (a maybe for this season), Healy).

A big one, Gudaf Tsegay banned for four months from June to September this year. Tested positive for Letrozole

    https://x.com/i/status/2065403755391057932

It's a weird one, it seems she was being treated for a diagnosed medical condition, supported by evidence, but she was refused a retroactive TUE. It also states that she would've been given the TUE if applied for in advance, so it seems the ban is more for negligence than it is an attempt at doping.

I've also seen it can be used to treat both breast cancer or infertility, so maybe there was a genuine medical reason for using it and she and her team were just stupid not to apply for the TUE in the first place.

Hopefully it is just an honest mistake, but those leaps and bounds that Tsegay made around 2020/2021 always seemed a bit too good to be true.

Possibly an element of take it anyway and just hope the refusal is overturned later on?

Ciara Mageean's cancer is stage 4. She is talking now to Brendan O'Connor now. Piece in Irish Times is devastating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,502 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

The Irish Times piece is brutal. Unlikely to see her 40th and it could be much sooner than that too (she's 34). You could tell it was bad from her demeanour, because she's normally always so positive about everything and she clearly wasn't positive about this on the RTE show. But I had still hoped that it wasn't this bad.

I feel so devastated for Ciara and her family. She is such a positive and inspirational role model, a lovely person, and what a talent. My daughter still has her poster on the wall from the European gold in 2024. Went to the Olympics in Paris in 2024, we were really looking forward to seeing Ciara perform live on the world stage but it wasn't to be.
