Is there an opening ceremony? How does that work with 3 countries?

Shakira is doing the opening ceremony for Mexico from 6:30 on Thursday. Official song of the tournament apparently: 'Dai Dai' (Trump).

Shakira is to World Cups what Buble is to Christmas always pops up this time of year.

I read that as Shaqiri first and it probably could have been apt for him also 😁

Guess who will be popping up in the Canadian ceremony? Maybe it has Christmas theme…

I forsee the opening rounds being low scoring dull affairs. Qatar was high scoring but it was mid season. Most of the european lads will have played at least 60 games+ . Heat will be stifling in a lot of venues.

Will be plenty of cards too at this world cup.

The 3 host nations are shite. Americans and Canadians offer a bit going forward but are poor at the back. Mexico will do alright at homebut won't go further than quarters.

Hard to predict winner, France the only really standout team that cover all bases.

I just noticed now that Chicago, the third biggest city in the US is not hosting games.

    Why ?

Because the Mayor told FIFA to feck off.

There was a contract from FIFA that said a dome may have to be placed over the stadium at FIFA's discretion and at the cities expense. The Mayor questioned this and they waved it away saying they put it in every contract.

The Mayor was having none of it because he said there was a first time for everything and decided not to proceed.

    Well done Mayor Rahm Emanuel

Good on him, fantastic city is Chicago. People there don't put up with bullshit.

I predict France to win the final on penalties with camera cutting to a very swollen looking Trump sleeping during the most dramatic moment.

Apparently up until they had a few injuries Japan were tipped to go really deep. Just heard Jonathan Wilson call them the best team Asia ever sent to a World Cup.

Their 21:00 Sunday game vs The Netherlands is the first game I'm actually excited to see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

They have a horrid group and i wouldn't fancy them against either the Dutch or Sweden, although 3rd place would likely see them through if they could get 4 points or so

Reading online that Ruud Gullit calling for Infantino to consider his position…

A World Cup should unite people. Instead, this tournament is becoming a symbol of division, political disputes, travel restrictions, and administrative failures. We are hearing reports that Iranian supporters have had their ticket allocations withdrawn. We have seen the case of Somali referee Omar Artan, selected by FIFA on merit to officiate at the highest level, yet reportedly denied entry into the host country. These are not minor issues. They strike at the heart of what the World Cup is supposed to represent…
Leadership is not about appearing in photographs with politicians or celebrating commercial success. Leadership is about taking responsibility when things go wrong. That is why I believe Mr Infantino must ask himself whether he is still the right person to lead world football.

Remember, this is what all previous hosts had to do eg

    https://x.com/Rahul_AJ_1990/status/2064173001017331730

"When South Africa hosted the World Cup in 2010 passed special legislation specifically to meet FIFA's hosting requirements for the 2010 World Cup. The most important were the '2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Special Measures Act, 2006 (Act 11 of 2006)' and the 'Second 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Special Measures Act, 2006 (Act 12 of 2006)'. These laws were enacted to give legal effect to the guarantees we had made to FIFA during the bidding process. The special laws effected temporary special provisions & exceptions in certain areas, including: Special visa, work permit, & accreditation arrangements for players, officials, media & visitors. These requirements were not exclusive to South Africa, as Korea & Japan (2002), Germany (2006), Brazil (2014), Russia (2018), Qatar (2022), had to enact the same."

Platini going after him again in the courts in the latest round of their crazy little war.

The USA played Germany there over the weekend.

I'd assume that back in 2018 when awarded the bid, that USA signed up to those rules & regulations (re travel, work permits etc) as well, or gave verbal commitments.

But ultimately there isn't a lot that FIFA can do when the host reneges on those commitments in the months/weeks before the tournament, when it is no longer feasible to look for an alternative host. For example, in a much more minor breach, Qatar reversed the decision to sell alcohol in the grounds/concourses a few days before 2022, and FIFA was powerless.
For these agreements to work, you need people of honour on both sides who abide by legal documents.

I think it will be interesting to see how Infantino switches tack in the months/years after this tournament concludes. I predict an attempt to portray himself as the hero who managed to prevent the worst excesses of Trump's demands, for example that it was only superb diplomacy by Infantino that allowed Iran, Iraq, Haiti etc to play at all, that prevented Democrat cities being stripped of games etc. That Gianni saved football.

Bet at work, who will be golden glove in this WC and how many goals they'll concede. Not sure who to go with.

No, FIFA are not powerless to react to such things. They're corrupt.

A world cup can be cancelled and arguably should be when the host nation are war mongers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

All you need to do is look at the most likely teams to reach the semis as all four teams will be gaurenteed a further game.

I'd leave Spain alone as they could easily use two keepers. So Allison, Maignan are the safest bets imo, maybe that other muppet from Argentina too

As corrupt as it gets. Handing out peace prize is all you need to know to make your mind up about how laughable they are as an org

At that point FIFA don't have much leverage… dock points of the host team maybe, either in this tournament or next qualifying?

But Trump hasn't just been elected, all of these should have been ironed out 12 months ago and if there was no concrete action by the Americans in terms of the type of legislation South Africa had to pass - pull it then.
The US then walking away from such legislation would be a different matter, but it's a moot point here as they never did anything concrete.

They have HUGE leverage: pulling the tournament at the last minute would be a massive embarassment for a host nation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,633 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

And a massive embarassment for FIFA though, with huge financial cost. At the last minute, how are the games intended for US cities to be accommodated elsewhere.

Can FIFA really embarass themselves any further than they already have?!

Whether they want to use it or not (they don't, all they actually care about is the bribes in their back pockets), FIFA's officals do have the leverage: they can cancel the tournament outright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Huge caveat being it's also being held in Mexico and Canada. It wouldn't be feasible to whip it from the US and expect the two other nations accomodate every other game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,304 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

I live in the world where, when you've sold 3 million tickets, taken in billions in TV rights and sponsorship money, committed (and already paid) a lot of that money to FAs and clubs, employed 1000s of local people for roles like security - that there comes a point where cancelling the whole thing is completely impossible and would effectively bankrupt the game.

I can't say exactly when that point arrived but I'd guess some time around when the draw was made last December. To misquote Macbeth, FIFA at that point 'are in blood stepped in so far, that returning would be as difficult as to go on'. I like the analogy as both Macbeth and FIFA are (as you say) corrupt.

All of those costs would legally be the responsibility of the USA in this instance since they're in breach of contract…

Though would bankrupting FIFA really be a bad thing? It would open the door for a new governing body to be created that could impose far better rules around who was allowed to compete in or host international competitions.

Certain Americans are notorius for never paying their legal costs.

Getting slightly interested in the Czech - South Africa game now. What Irish Channels will be showing the matches and which ones? Will all of them be available Free to Air on some channel?

Every game is on RTE2 free to air.
Every game is either on ITV or BBC also free to air.
