You get the feeling that from all the noise, we may be moving on players that we don't want to (as a fan base), like Trossard or Martinelli, maybe Ben or even worse! I suppose a few more will go like Jesus, Norgaard, Kepa etc.

The Norgaard thing was very strange. Dunno why he was brought in.

For me he was brought in to cover long term midfield injuries and for group leadership and experience, also for what would be second rate games ( early cup competitions) Mikel has signed players similar previously. To be a good squad player on not so crazy money.

Its a little weird alright. I fully understand why he was brought in but dont get why he wasnt used in the league more before Christmas.

I think it was a mistake (probably consensus opinion) and Zubi suffered a bit for it.

I have no real issue with this.

Under Wenger, every time we won the league and after there was debate over which players will be taken from us.

Anelka, Petit, Overmars, Henry, Vieira, Hleb, Nasri, Sagna, Clichy, Fabregas, Van Persi

the norgard thing isn’t really a mystery, Arteta can see who’s playing well in training and obviously he wasn’t up to scratch, who’s idea was it to buy him ? It may not have been Arteta at all

Norgaard was depth that’s all. Probably didn’t work out as either party expected but he was brought in as cover for another new signing in Zubamendi. Squads win leagues and I think over the last few years that’s where we suffered.
very interested to see where Arsenal look to strengthen, up front and left wing seem the most obvious. Beyond that it will be replacing any squad players released I think.
IF a winger comes in I’d assume one of Martenelli or Trossard would go. I’d be torn on either leaving

I think we'll need to see Jesus moved on before we look at a new striker.

Left wing and right full back the obvious areas that need reviewing.

Trossard starts for Belgium today against Tunisia. 2pm kick off

It is more that the club is obliged to accept any offer of £5m of more for Kepa. The agreement when we signed him was if he didn't become first choice, he could leave for that price for first-team football.

Doesn't guarantee he will leave, but the choice is in his hands if any club bids £5m.

A blow for the Netherlands as well, as they have an awesome defence including Mickey van de Ven (Spurs), Virgil van Dijk (Pool) and Nathan Ake (BC)

One to keep an eye on tbh. Both himself and Califiori haven’t been available enough since they arrived. Things need to improve drastically on that front for them both

one to keep an eye on for sure but he has played 92 games the last 2 seasons for us.

More than I would have imagined tbh. Probably because of the timing of his injuries. My bad

Arsenal's key players, Raya, Gabriel, Rice, Timbre, Zubi and Saliba are over played. There's a price t be played if you keep flogging players.

The last thing they need now is going deep in World Cup Tournament. Long term injuries to one or more of those players would spell trouble for next season. Rice on form, which is is 95% of the time is a dream for centre halves to have in front of you.

Theres also reports that some of the pitches and training venues are not up to scratch. Concerns relate to the playability some of the stadiums that normally have astroturf pitches that have had temporary grass pitches installed and that they may lead to injury. Not too sure how credible these concerns are and if its just world cup chatter.

But I would hate to see any injuries, especially knee related in the WC.

And to be fair if Arteta/Berta hadnt gone for "quantity" over "quality" (exaggerating for effect) last summer we wouldnt have won the league.

Zafar Iqbal has allegedly been sacked by Arsenal from his position as head doctor, it is unclear why this happened and follows Arteta seeking a review of the injury situation

It's an interesting one. Someone's head had to roll. He's the head of Sports Science so he's the one on the chopping block. I wonder what affect this will have on the injury record next season. I'd sympathise with him. Not much I'd imagine he can do about Arteta running players into the ground time after time after time.

So do you think that the medical team advises Arteta on player welfare/match readiness via all of the countless metrics they use, and he just overrides them and keeps using players until they break?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,729 ✭✭✭Large bottle small glass

    Arteta is a stubborn man.

Arsenal were brilliant from Jan to end of season two years ago. From a training camp in January to end of season they dropped 5 points.

3 of those and what lost them the title was against Aston villa.

Arteta picked the same side for three huge games in a row, two against Bayern and the villa game in a 8 day window.

He made same mistake this season with two many key players featuring in two domestic cups.

Rice, Gabriel etc shouldn't even be told when those games are on 😁

That warm winter break in Dubai really helped the team. Hopefully they'll do it again next season. I think being kncocked out of the FA Cup early helped and they took advantage by going away.

I think there is absolutely an element of that. For sure. Sometimes he probably has little choice but ya, that does happen. First 2 that spring to mind are White and Havertz. Over played. Then Saka. Gabriel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,759 ✭✭✭G1032

It helped this year too. Looking back on the season, getting beaten by Southampton was a blessing in disguise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,276 ✭✭✭TheRona

How many were injured from overplaying? I think a lot of the time, players injuries are put down to overplaying them, without any real basis to it. I think Havertz is a prime example, where he got injured after he had finished his run of games, rather than during it - yet the blame was still put on him being overplayed.

In fairness this was the first year I can recall under Arteta where we had decent cover all across the ground and we also then won the league. Yet we still needed our stars to grind it out.
