I've never in my life seen a car company who had to replace a basic commonplace item like that window either - wouldn't instill any confidence in the brand for me anyway but you can love them all you want, that's fair enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,672 ✭✭✭✭listermint

I don't need to tell myself that. It's a premium model . I'm not near to bother explaining why to you.

Also I don't know how many times you need to know. I don't own one. It's not my money.

Also can you explain what questions were dodged and why you are so angry this afternoon ?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,579 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

It’s a mid range Chinese car. Very nice too. It’s not a premium car though.

I’m no more angry at you lad. Why keep addressing me as a taxi driver if not to try be a smart arse and wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,672 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Awe diddums you're back to a window again. Ignored everything else and came back to the window. I could go on about all the Tesla quality problems but I'm not a child. And why bother you've probably had the work done but aren't willing to say . Others are, mad stuff I know.

Imagine having suspension components going out of the factory that are dangerous . Imagine ! But a window with poor fm ... Like ...

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,579 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Many new cars will have problems.

Seal suffers from bad infotainment, sticking door handles (bad design from the factory, imagine that), peeling interiors, bad radio signal, and as you stated, are dealt with under warranty without quibble.

These are BYD issues so it’s not as premium as you think.

On a Seal forum why are you bringing a Tesla up, deflection maybe from the BYD issues. You didn't get another BYD yourself either I see,a Renault now isn't it?🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,672 ✭✭✭✭listermint

None of those make a vehicle not premium… my bmw had peeling mirror paint reacting with the aluminum. That was an M3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Is that a promise? Last comment in this thread from here on?

BYD will be in trouble with the grant changes. They will have to discount the Seal and the Sealion or the market will move on. It's already too expensive for what it is.

Could go the way of Polestar in Ireland, if it's not too late to recover that brand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,672 ✭✭✭✭listermint

    Polestars are class.

I don't see that brand going anywhere personally. Doing good business across the water.

There's many folks that don't like to have what everyone else has on the roads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

    What Renault did you get?

I've owned a Renault Trafic for 9 years.

Have had Kadjars, Clios and Capturs over the last 12 years. Currently just the Trafic and several motorcycles.

My wife however owns her seal which she bought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Sorry, I thought you mentioned you had moved on from BYD to something else, or no longer had a Seal, and someone mentioned a new Renault?

The modern Renault EV range is admirable. Not a bad car in the whole line up, and some real crackers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,672 ✭✭✭✭listermint

No just explaining to another poster that I don't own the car and it wasn't my money. It seemed that was stimulating my defense of the brand.

I'm fairly brand agnostic tbh and I don't see that changing in my lifetime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Hang on a sec, so you never owned a Seal? In the two years you've been whinging/bragging in the Seal thread, and cross-contaminating Tesla discussions with Seal nonsense, it now turns out the car wasn't yours?

    Mother-a-gad 😜

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,672 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Yup, objectively that makes the being defensive argument mute . 😉😄

And just to clarify so we can put a pin in this. I've not 'cross contaminated' any thread. I've never come on to Tesla thread with the utter bollix about either car like we got today. My issues with Tesla are fairly specific and remain so. Nothing to do with byd, if byd were sticking fsd into the seal id have the same level of ire for that. Dangerous! (I want to clarify that fully as someone else tried earlier to make up stuff related to that too as if I was doing a this car is better than that car over on that thread..) Buy what you like couldn't care less 👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,382 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

Well it looks like tippytappy aka mad lad has been successful in blowing up another thread.

Sorry though lads, anyone who thinks the seal is a premium motor is deluding themselves, it's a very nice car and the fast one is good value for what you get power wise etc but the base model is over priced here and is a 30k usd car in china , premium for now remains the preserve of the premium car brands , of which BYD isn't one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 442 ✭✭tppytoppy

    Not that poster

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 358 ✭✭Pat734

Well I traded in a top so called Premium brand in 2024 for a BYD seal design, was iffy about it at the time but fierce happy about that decision now. Delighted in fact

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,382 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

i'm sure you are, its a nice car, doesn't change anything i said though.

The ruse here is to make people think its a cheap alternative to a bmw or an audi rather than a $30k USD car that you are paying €50k euro for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

And of course when you have spent close to 50k on the car of course you're going to defend your impression of its premium credentials.

It's a Fisher-Price brand with no cool or unique features. That said, the Seal is a nice package and is smart looking and I would happily own one if it had a hatchback vs a standard hinged boot.

I just wouldn't pay any more than Model 3 prices for one, and I suppose that's really the reality of the market we're in.

I had a look there at the pricing again of the base Seal model, that's a bit steep all right currently. I wonder if they'll be changing their pricing for the Irish market somewhere this year, but most likely they don't really give a **** about the Irish market in general like most car brands do. My 251 AWD sat between the current pricing of the Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor (which is slower) and the performance (which is faster), so a similar offering value wise really. I would pick the Seal over the Model 3 again, especially the facelift with the Google Automotive software. I prefer having an instrument cluster so I don't have to look to the side for speed etc., head-up display, Android Auto & Carplay as I have more than 1 car, steering wheel buttons, more buttons on the center console (can still do with more buttons though, a Xiaomi style button bar below the screen would be awesome), comfort, road noise (I still found the highland to be noisy) and the seating position. When test driving the Model 3 I found myself to be a bit high up seating wise, the seat wouldn't go low enough to get that actual saloon feeling. Kind of like a cross over, not really that different from the Hyundai Kona EV I had before.

I wouldn't go as far as calling the BYD brand a Fisher-Price brand, as that's a bit of an exaggeration. I know this is the internet and all and we're all after that polarizing hot take, but I wonder what you'd call the alternatives in this price bracket like Hyundai, Tesla, Polestar (2), Cupra, VW etc. They're all solid choices with their own quirks really. Even the fit and finish of the "premium" legacy brands like Mercedes (new CLA electric) and BMW (i4) can be questioned if they're really still that premium. It's a brave new world and most legacy car makers are struggling here.

Back to the BYD Seal discussion itself: not sure if anyone's keeping up with the community driven development for the BYD cars in general, especially the DiLink 3 models (like the Seals we drive), but there's a lot going on now that the BYD SDK has been made available (https://github.com/jkaberg/pyBYD):

    • Overdrive (sentry mode and other quality of life improvements): https://overdrive-5lc.pages.dev/
    • Alternative launcher for the infotainment with blind spot camera view etc: https://kinex.lexwah.com/
    • More comprehensive trip stats: https://github.com/angoikon/byd-trip-stats
    • Ability to cast any app to the instrument cluster: https://github.com/Kiroha/byd-dashcast
    • Native maps app that can be displayed on the instrument cluster plus an alternative launcher for the infotainment: https://sealnav.com/. Fair warning, this requires creating a user account and will have paid features at some point.

Of course you have to have enabled sideloading (including wireless ADB), plus there's the usual warning to scan APKs before you install them on your car for malicious code etc. Most have their own GH repo so you can review the code and download the releases straight from there, but still, be responsible.

Proper objective post and not emotional posting or slagging (bubble car etc).

Enjoy the car. and safe motoring.

I would be careful about adding non approved software could cause warranty issues and other problems

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Regarding the pricing of the Seal Design in Ireland - it actually went UP in 2026 didn't it?

    So yeah.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 768 ✭✭✭Anois_

I agree they are the ones that started it the last day and then came today to post sh*t again as if they were innocent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 137 ✭✭rdewit83

Agreed, I had my car at the BYD Wexford for service and they made no mention of the additionally installed apps (I disabled them before handing the car in), but as always do this at your own risk. You're mainly installing the apps on the infotainment system which still has limited access to the rest of the car's systems, but you would still want to be vigilant and check the code beforehand if available.

I find it somewhat entertaining that people are arguing about a brand being premium or not ...when for me the proof is in the pudding.

Two BMW i4 vehicles, riddled with faults and software issues and hardware issues and very very pricey. Depreciated like a brick and horrific customer service requiring legal threats.

Two Seals with absolutely zero issues, fantastic customer service, solid trade in values, not a single fault for me personally with the car (I know some exist but I've been lucky). And compared to the cost of the BMW I would say fantastic value for money.

Also turns as many if not more heads as the i4 did.

I know which brand I'd consider better as a consumer and not a fan boy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,382 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

yep, and id say the exact same thing about my model y juniper versus the etron 55 i had before it, almost word for word.

that doesnt make it premium though. it is much better value for money as is the seal v the i4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,270 ✭✭✭✭User1998

I always thought the Seal was more premium than a Model 3 but not as premium as say an EQE?

Don’t get upset over a car. For gods sake, I never once put the car down. Just disagreed with that scumbag that it’s not worth the €50k price for the base RWD model in my opinion.

If you take offense to that, stay off the internet. What makes it worse is that you’re getting upset over a car you haven’t even bought yet. And my never.
