One of the Israeli teams that qualified for Europe is Beitar Jerusalem who are even more extreme in their views. Extremely racist apparently.

Don’t Israeli teams not play their home games in Israel for their “European” games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,642 ✭✭✭topmanamillion

There's a real possibility one of them ends up being paired with an Israeli club. Clubs that have qualified will have budgeted for at least a round in Europe. They will then have to choose between blowing a huge hole in their budget or facing a media/social media sh1tshow.

As for the national team, The whole thing has been left fester without any leadership from the FAI or the government. If the FAI had come out straight away and said the gate would be donated to a Palestinian charity it would have taken a lot of heat out of it. They've stayed silent. The way it is playing out now it'll end up being played in a neutral venue behind closed doors. The players who play in it will be vilified for being footballers. Seamus Coleman alluded to it being unfair to leave that responsibility on the players.

The chances aren’t THAT high. Derry City can’t play an Israeli team in Europa League 1st round or Conference League 2nd round (they won’t be favourites in the Europa League game. Shels can’t get an Israeli team in Conference League 2nd round. Only Bohs can, if they draw a team in the 1st round whose team coefficient would also see them seeded in the 2nd round (Bohs won’t be using their own coefficient at any stage of the competition).

All 3 teams would have to get further than they’re projected to, to be able to get the Israel draw. Rovers are the one where the chances are much higher, because a) they’ll probably play 4 qualifying rounds and b) they’re quite likely to play League Stage football, at which point there is no regionalisation.

Rovers did draw Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv in 2010. The thoughts of that tie now...

A Rovers-Maccabi or Bohs-Beitar game would be an unmanageable event as is, even without the EU presidency taking place, no way these would not be moved to neutral locations either.

Great memories of the Bnei Yehuda games. 'When he scored he broke the hearts of the israelies, Bocker Bayly Bocker Bayly'

I have to say that I do agree with the Governments position that they will support whatever the FAI decide to do.

I agree that the FAI have not shown leadership here, have left the Irish players in a terrible position and will leave any LOI club who is unlucky enough to find themselves in a tie against Israeli opposition in the same boat.

As regards to whether I'd want Boh's to fulfil their fixture - if I had a vote I'd be voting not to. I would then be looking forward to buying the inevitable "Boycott" jersey next season 😉

Whatever's behind it, surely Athlone or maybe Sligo would have been in the fans' best interest. Shorter journeys and better roads.

Not to mention the travel costs for the clubs.

Oh sorry, forgot, it's the FAI.

We turned down Athlone over a perception of Dundalk having an advantage in the plastic pitch.

The sum of it all is we should have had these two weeks where there are potential Gaa clashes sorted before the season started. We didn't and now we're scrambling.

Caulfield interviewed and said that they offered to play in Galway next Monday but Dundalk turned this down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,175 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

Which is perfectly fine, not upto Dundalk to accommodate that request. We should have had all our ducks in a row before fixtures were released. JC is trying to create a siege mentality around it. If fans were the main concern then Athlone would have been picked.

Dundalk didn't have to but is it such a big deal to compromise when another club is in trouble? I appreciate that they have another game on the following Friday but all clubs will look for some flexibility now and again. I'm sure Dundalk will from another club at some stage.

I also accept what you say about Galway being at fault and not using Athlone. To me, Monday is a fair compromise.

There's nothing to gain by dragging both teams and fans to Cork next Friday.

Galway county has plenty of venues like Tuam stadium and the Sportsgrounds. They don't seem to have looked into anything like that and just assumed they'd be accomodated. Galway/Caufield just didn't fancy playing it on Friday night and either wanted it on the Monday in Pearse or to be pushed out later into the season. That's just too picky for a club that knew this could be an issue. As you rightly say if it was about the fans it'd be played in Athlone irregardless of the plastic pitch.

Another 6 or 7 players leaving in the window for us, which means another batch of duds arriving.

    What a mess we are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,140 ✭✭✭PGE1970

Did Galway or the GAA call off the Friday game?

I'd certainly have less sympathy if it was Galway! I presumed that the GAA made that decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,140 ✭✭✭PGE1970

    Any idea who is going?

Can we have Darragh back 😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,642 ✭✭✭topmanamillion

Galway GAA footballers have a game on the Saturday against Westmeath. Galway United made zero contingency for that happening. Galway GAA offered them the use of Pearse on the Monday but Dundalk turned that down. Difficult to criticise the GAA on this one when they are offering the use of Pearse and Celtic Park to LOI clubs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,140 ✭✭✭PGE1970

I'm not being critical of the GAA at all, I can understand why they don't want a game on the pitch the evening before nevermind any stadium clean-up and prep that might be required. When I refer to Galway, I mean the football club not the GAA.

I'd assumed that that was the case. You seemed to suggest that John Caulfield looked for the cancellation and not the GAA. Or do I read you wrong? If so, my mistake!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,846 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

Putting it on Monday just punishes Dundalk who haven't done anything. They have Bohs away on Friday so why should they inconvenience themselves to help fix the mess GUFC created?

Surely in December they could've went to the FAI and asked to play 2 or 3 games in a row away from home around this period if there was a risk they'd be kicked out of Pearse at short notice.

Just can't wrap my head around picking Cork on a Friday night. Fair enough the Athlone pitch is crap, but they could've played in Longford or Sligo. Zero regard shown for fans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,642 ✭✭✭topmanamillion

Ultimately Caufield looked for it to be rearranged but was told that was a non runner and they'd forfeit it by the FAI. Essentially, Friday in Pearse was out, then Galway offered Monday night in Pearse to Dundalk but they didn't want that because they've a game on the following Friday night. Caulfield then looks for it to be played later in the season because he doesn't want to give Dundalk a perceived advantage of a plastic pitch in Athlone. FAI presumably step in at this point and tell them it's Cork/Athlone on Friday night or a forfeit. The correct call when the league is about to take a break for the World Cup. Caulfield does an in house interview looking for sympathy when he's the one that's picked Cork over Athlone.

Mostly loanees. We have a pile on short term contracts.

Darragh wasn't one of those listed I'm afraid.

Interestly, Brian Maher won't sign a contract extension. Must want out too.

Christ some wildly inaccurate assumptions there.

Sportsground (Dexcom) has permanent line markings for rugby and can't be used. Friday night can't be used as the lights are not permitted in Pearse Stadiums local agreement at this time of year. If we didn't want it played Friday why are we playing Friday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,175 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

In response to Oat as the quote didn't show up.

Longford unavailable as two games being played on it at the weekend and optics of playing in Sligo wouldn't have been great if assume.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭I told ya

The Showgrounds is available on Friday night. Don't understand the optics bit.

For Galway, surely a trip to Sligo is nearer than Cork.

Don’t think it’s too bad €25 for terrace or €30 for seat. €14/€19 for kids.

Just listened to the Bohs podcast 'One Up Top'. It features John 'Chippie' O'Connor, our resident numbers nerd. He is a professional accountant and served on the Bohs board for years.

Topic was money in the League of ireland, not just Bohs. Very interesting conversation that should be of interest to all fans of the league. Well worth a listen.

Yeh I thought they would double the price and still get a sellout with Celtic fans.

im guessing they want season ticket holders to buy the tickets to make it a good atmosphere or maybe to give us something to look forward to at home considering how miserable it’s been this season. It’s also full profit for club (presuming Celtic aren’t rubbing it in).
