I think Wilson could be a bit of a trap.

Form fell off a cliff towards end of year, barring a 8-10 game spell he wouldnt be a Rogers like replacement. Fine squad player, particularly if price is right etc.

    Like the sound of Mbaye.

    I would keep Digne.

RB and pacey winger def a priority, if not to try and slowly wind back the age profile, as was mentioned previously.

Romano reporting that Martinez is Juventus’ number 1 target and that talks have already begun.

After the way he conducted himself in August and a more inconsistent season than normal (came good down the stretch in fairness to him) I would welcome the opportunity to go after the keeper of the future.

I'm the fence. He should have 3 good years still in him, and he is still world class, IMO.

But his wages are high. And if we got a good fee for him, that would help. It will probably be our last opportunity to get a decent fee. If we keep him 2-3 years we wont be getting much fee.

The bit I’d be worried about is that the decline has already begun last year. I’d rather get a decent fee now towards funding his replacement, because obviously that won’t be an option at the end.

Martinez, Mings and Digne are the 3 longterm seniors who I’d be moving on this year.

Bizot is not the replacement, I'd like someone signed sealed and delivered before we let him go.

I’d keep Martinez if possible, almost certain to end up with a worse goalkeeper if we change, and down money on the transfer if we want someone younger. Maybe if a great young keeper has a release clause it could work well, like Joan Garcia last season but players like that have a lot of options, Garcia going to Barcelona shows that, and then end up on similar money to Martinez. Chevalier who we were being linked to went to PSG for €40M and ended up on the bench.

Been linked with James Trafford through parts of the summer. Everything good that Villa have done in the transfer market in the last 5 years has been signing players (just Duran and Rogers really) who were not coveted, and coaching them to be players that are either the future of Aston Villa, or players that can generate huge fees to shape the future of Aston Villa.

There’ll be French links as well because the club was heavily linked with Lens keeper this summer and last summer Chevalier was heavily linked and has since fallen heavily out of favour at PSG.

Apparently Emi and Juve have agreed terms and it’s just down to them trying to low roll Villa now on transfer fee.

Seems very clear to me that he has been trying to engineer his exit for at least 18 months and I won’t be too sad to say goodbye.

Doesn’t take away from what he achieved at Villa and at least he has ended on a very high note.

I am a huge Emi fan and think almost anyone would be a downgrade on him when he is at his best and honestly I think he was great this season (Erratic last season but great this season). I can see the business sense in letting him go if we can replace him with someone on much lesser but that is believed to be a top class keeper for the future and for that reason wouldn't be annoyed with him if he left but the Juve link seems like nonsense, the club should dissmiss. reports keep suggesting Juve want to get him for practically free and are citing his age and desire to move as a reason he should not cost anything. Bull! Pay up or p!ss off, Villa have a world class player and should not give him up for free even if the wwage bill benefits.

He can’t have too many years left at the top but a free is a joke. We should just loan him to them if they don’t want to pay a transfer fee. And for a loan fee at that.

How much can Villa realistically expect to save on wages on goalkeepers by letting Martinez go and signing a decent replacement? If Martinez is on 150K a week what will a replacement be on 50K, 80K, 100K? At best save 5M a year to have a goalkeeper on 50K a week, so what standard are we expecting for that.

Are we still under UEFA restrictions for next season? Do we need to spend that same as we take in from the transfer window? If so I can’t see letting Martinez go making any sense unless we can sign a replacement for a similar amount to what we get. 23M for 3 years with Martinez is difficult value to beat.

James Trafford is on approx 50k a week at City, can’t imagine he could command much more at Villa. I’m not saying Trafford is necessarily the keeper of the future. But once the club have identified the person who is, that’s probably around the going rate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,358 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Romano saying we’re in for Suzuki the Parma and Japan keeper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 600 ✭✭✭cgorzy

Even at that it is hard to see there being much in it for Villa, if Man City want their money back in the transfer that’s the whole of the wage savings gone, 50K on the new wage and 100K a week to cover the fee over 5 years. Whatever fee they get for Martinez then would be the financial gain to offset any loss on the field. It could all work out well but there is a lot of risk. We won’t be rebuilding the team from the money we could get for Martinez.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,358 ✭✭✭✭CSF

There is more risk than just that. Martinez is right up there among the highest paid goalkeepers. I don’t think you could criticise his 6 years overall without being harsh, but I would say his first 4 years were much better than his last 2, and I do worry that he doesn’t get better from here at 34 and he’s on that salary for the next 3 years if he stays.

It’s also the 2nd summer in a row where he has been eager to get out of the club. This time the club he’s agreed terms with don’t even have CL football when Villa do. It’s absolutely time to get the next guy in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,675 ✭✭✭✭listermint

    Agreed.

Loses have to be cut ahead of time.

For whatever reason he wants to be closer to the med. Make it happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,358 ✭✭✭✭CSF

One of the mistakes that will probably happen, is that whoever the new keeper is next year will have to be as good as or better than Emi next year.

Clubs like Villa don’t have the luxury of selling their elite 34 year olds to be replaced by 29 year olds of the exact same immediate level. You just need to be getting it right and signing someone who can be your keeper at a high level for a long time.

And if the club get that wrong, it doesn’t make selling Emi a bad move, it makes the player identification bad.

When he's mentally signed out the jig is up. So our only option is to get the next signing done efficiently and as you said more effectively

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,139 ✭✭✭adaminho

From this morning. This will be the last update for 3 weeks as the guy that does it is going on holiday.

Apparently Juve are balking at 15 million for Martinez. If we cant get 15 million, then hold onto him. Hes still brilliant. Even if he has had a drop off, it will be extremely hard to get someone better. Hes a great shot stopper and good on the ball, its not a combination thats easily picked up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,675 ✭✭✭✭listermint

15 million is not overpriced or under prizes. So juv can go shite frankly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,358 ✭✭✭✭CSF

It’s more complicated than that though, Emi Martinez is on approx 150k up until 2029. He is obviously not motivated to take a penny less until summer of 2029 when he will be 37.

Does anyone think Martinez is especially likely to be among the best keepers in the world in the 27/28 and 28/29 season?

Juve would be eating up a huge goalkeeper contract if they take him on, and if he stays at Villa, there’s almost definitely going to be a spell of his contract where he is not worth the salary he is on (questionable whether he was even one of the best goalkeepers in the world for the last 2 years IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,675 ✭✭✭✭listermint

It may be complicated, but I don't see anything less than 15 being acceptable for a keeper of his talent and still age profile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,805 ✭✭✭LeBash

I dont think Trafford will be the replacement for Martinez. I dont think he looks great on the ball and that will be key for Emery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,212 ✭✭✭Patser

I think a lot of what we can get depends on the World Cup - if he has another 2022, world cup winner with last minute amazing save, then we can look for 30 million, maybe the Saudis (if they still are spending) will want the prestige. A poor world cup and we ask less, especially given the fact that a lot of his reputation is Argentina based as other fan groups don't rate/watch Villa.

And I'd rather he goes abroad than watvh him at a Prem League rival

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,212 ✭✭✭Patser

I'd rather Chevalier - he was great for Lille vs us last year, and is now sitting on PSG bench. Only 24, so would hopefully be GK solution for years

Just looking at the predicted line ups for the match tonight and Bacuna is in the Curacao squad. Had a little chuckle think about his interview that he wanted to leave Villa for a Champions League team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,419 ✭✭✭pavb2

Yes, I think Jose Okores made similar noises. Out of that squad one of the only players I’d have any sympathy for is Ashley Westwood, he became the focal point for a lot of the fans abuse and when we eventually did get relegated he was one of the only ones on the pitch who seemed genuinely upset.

Bacuna’s big moment was giving the good luck message to a Villa fan on the Rose of Tralee who hadn’t a clue who he was. I don’t know if the World Cup can compete with that.
