This watch was the one that got me back to wearing a watch every day, the BFK. I could have bought a Seiko SKX for similar money back in 2014, but I don’t think it would have survived the hardship that this has been put through. It was even put on the dog collar a few times when the change was getting low.

compare and contrast, oh it’s maths II today 😀

@blue. Certainly has survived many a knock and imo looks better for it. Would never have thought of using man's best friend to charge the kinetic.

Agreed, Tool watches are meant to be used, not pampered.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 13,140 Mod ✭✭✭✭blue5000

Thanks, surprisingly the hardlex crystal has held up pretty well. Definitely not pampered!
The charge indicator is at 10 seconds, was at 5 yesterday. I think it will take at least a week to get it back up to normal at 30 seconds. One kinetic is enough for anyone. Has anyone here changed the battery on one?

Strapping it to the dog is gas stuff altogether😅 Good thinking. Really they need to be worn, obviously, but perhaps more than a rotation of a collector with many watches.

Have done a few capicator upgrades and a movt swop for nos on em. Main issues I've seen is old worn out battery/capicators holding low or no charge and gummed up movements.

Mechanically the wee reduction wheel off the auto winding takes a kicking as the gear ratio is mega steep. If the auto winding is not free and smooth the above is goosed with dried up lubrication or worn out pivot.

Replacement battery/capicator are gone to lithium and even when worn as the manual suggests the charge indicator will show half charge. Nothing to worry about as that's more a function of the charge indicator not being able/compatibe to read the new lithium capicator as it did the old style. New upgraded cells well worth the investmentbif the mech end is OK.

You can achieve full charge by leaving it overnight on an elec toothbrush induction charger. This mimics the charge created by movement and should fully charge even the new lithium battery's. Haven't tried doing this mind you, only read about it lately.

wow. love that watch - i have had one for quite some time, and bought the range about 20 years ago when they got mad cheap.

as h_lime said, the capacitors are handy enough to change out. you can get the new cells to full charge but you need the seiko kinetic charger which i think is hard enough to get your paws on these days.

the blue one on the right was my primary watch for a good 15 years… and not a scratch on the crystal either

(and yes, i know its a non-original bracelet on the grey face but i cannot find an original, must have a look again)

and it looks like quartzimodo is gone for a while, but here is their old article on these watches

Seiko kinda abandoned the tech for solar it seems. Was a good innovation and would have liked to see seiko persue it further.

Took this chap out of hibernation today. I actually really enjoy it. Great dial and build quality for the price

I love this watch, I picked up a cheap sailcloth strap for 6 euro 😅 I think it looks well and it's very comfortable to wear.

My DIY watchclub sub decided it wanted to stop at ½ past the hour during the week.

On close inspection (camera phone zoomed to 10) I noticed that the minute hand was slightly loose & catching the 2nd hand at this point of its travels. Using a springbar fork, gave it a little squeeze & presto!!

While waiting to see if it would work I took a few close ups of them passing each other.

Probably a cruder method than that used by @H_Lime or @IrishPlayer but it worked and I'm happy with myself.

I spent some time on my ManCave roof today, installing a new Microinverter and reterminating some MC4 connectors.

    Now?
It's time for the auld dog and I to enjoy the fruits of my better Half's gardening whilst I sway away in the hammock 😁

I was looking into that DIY Watch Club. How did you find the quality?

I was initially planning on using a different face bought on, I don't know, Aliexpress or etsy or somewhere. Something with different index points. Non-roman characters etc. Maybe even custom from some plucky little etsy shop. I did manage to place a preorder for latest Kurono Tokyo watch but I'm still intrigued by these.

I'm typically put off by Bulova. I find their shops in airports etc and displays elsewhere to be very gaudy.

    BUT that's a BEAUTY!!!

I've found it to be grand. Came with the various tools needed etc. The way I see it you can always swap bits out afterwards as you see fit.

Steinhart Ocean One Vintage Military 42 on my 7" wrist.

Edit: Cost €515 inc. delivery and took exactly 1 week to arrive by Fedex without tracking. Sizing the screw links was left to a professional as the screws were tight, €15 in McDowell's O'Connell St. did a very good job.

42mm is probably the limit for my wrist, have tried on 44mm watches before and they were definitely too large.

The Speedtimer is a watch I've been tempted by in the past mainly for its looks but chirographs just like GMTs and all the other 'complications' aren't really my thing. Nice watch though.

Yep, spot on. Orangy tan would be perfect for this. Suede a cool option, must keep a look out.

And I'm about to sin. I've a Radiomir quaranta just pulled the trigger. I'll post a pic when it arrives

That's a lovely watch, but I always feel they would be too big for my wrist unfortunately.

Must actually try one on sometime!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,076 ✭✭✭✭unkel

They wear relatively small because lug to lug isn't that much bigger than case diameter. Most people with an average wrist size would even get away with the 47mm version!

Yeah I tried on a few in Belfast last year and they wear deceptively small
