Who would you rank top 3 City players this season?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,424 ✭✭✭POKERKING

o Reilly, Haaland and Bernardo. Not sure which order tbh. Semenyo and Doku ahead of Cherki too for me and actually Nunes too who has been excellent despite me slating him for his whole career up til this season!

The rumours have been swirling for months now. Likely why Brady abandoned ship a while ago.

Anyway, more suited to the Championship thread now :-(

What showboating did Haaland do against Arsenal? I must have missed that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭ronjo

He didn't do any. Was a reference to Cherki.

I mentioned Haaland having seemingly no chance of winning (according to bookies) as surprising considering the amount he scored this season. He has a lot more G/A total than anyone else

FWIW 9 clubs have announced their Players of the Season

Alex Scott, Igor Thiago, James Garner, Harry Wilson, Ethan Ampadu, Dominik Szoboszlai, Nico O'Reilly, Bruno Fernandes and Morgan Gibbs-White have all won at their respective clubs, while Arsenal have 3 nominations in Gabriel, Raya and Rice, and surprising to me the Villa one is between Martinez and Onana.

John McGinn at Villa should be player of the season we really felt it when he was injured. Even though his form dropped off mid season Buendia scored some crucial goals I’d have him and Tielemans over Martinez and Onana.

Onana is injury prone and this was probably his best season for Villa, he’s played well in patches but hasn’t been consistent enough for a player bought for 50 million.

I'm interested in the Villa fan's player of the year. Apparently Harvey Elliott is in the mix thanks to a concerted online campaign to recognise his extraordinary season.

    Matty Cash got my vote.

Lewis hall or Bruno G for Newcastle I assume. Just strange that it could be Anthony Gordon in theory when hes already moved on. Maybe they should make the announcements earlier.

Staying on Newcastle. Did they really make the right call selling Isak? They are up only 15 million after selling Isak and buying in two players to replace him that scored 8 league goals. They also told the market and their own squad that if you push for a move by acting the prick you’ll get what you want. Seems they may have been better off holding their ground.

Not a bad shout. Apparently only missed 83 minutes in the EPL this season.

I thought it was Rogers for Villa, played practically all the time, carried the attack most of the season, he took the lead when Villa were getting the points to get Champions League. He took lots of punishment for the team too even in games where he wasn’t at his best as an attacking threat. Already Europa League player of the tournament.

It seems Arsenal, City and Villa have many players who could be nominated on each team.

United and Liverpool is clearer I guess (Pool between VVD and Szoboslai?)

I do love when an underrated player or workhorse gets rewarded. Yeah your top scorer got 12 goals but the rugged centre half or dm who played every game at a solid 8/10 week in week out probably won you more points. I had no complaints Ampadu got it for us but Gabi Gudmundsson was great for us.

Right money they just invested it poorly, I think Woltemade looks good, he's more of a support striker though, Wissa had waste of money written all over him, 1 really good season at 28 but they where desperate after Sesko went to United.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,410 ✭✭✭✭8-10

They didn't have much of a choice to be honest. The problem was they left it too late in the window by claiming they were holding out for a ridiculous £150m they were never going to get. They knew at the start of the window that he was leaving but let it screw up their whole window and we're scrambling by the end and got the same amount of money they knew months before was the offer.

They could have bought Ekitike or Sesko early in the window. Hindsight and all, but I'd imagine they're not happy behind the scenes with how it went down

they could have just said at the end what they said at the start. He wasn’t for sale. Move on. They’ve got their money, a fair valuation but have largely wasted it on players who can’t lace Isak’s boots.

and i dont believe Isak’s claims about never playing for Newcastle again.

They couldn’t have had a much worst season if they just kept Isak.

Player suited to counter attack which they don't use...Awful decision.

The fact that they spent the whole window looking for a replacement and then ended up accepting less than they said they wanted suggests to me that the 'he isn't for sale' jibe was never true. If that was genuinely their position then why sign Woltemade and Wissa?

They decided to sell him but wanted a replacement in first, they just took far too long to get that replacement and ended up overpaying for Wissa

Woltemade you could argue was overpaying too - but I rate him and think he'll have a good WC and come good

I thought it last summer before it happened and I still think it now. Isak leaving Newcastle and moving to Liverpool was a bad move for Isak, a bad move for Newcastle and an uncharacteristic foolish move by Liverpool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,522 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

I think it’ll work out in the end for Liverpool & Isak. Hes an incredible footballer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,393 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

They wouldn't get near what they got for him now so I'd say Newcastle are happy enough. If they decide to they could recoup a decent chunk of Woltemade if they move him on again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,522 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

that may or may not be true, we’ll never know what Isak would have done with 4 , 4! years left on his contract.

What we do know is they’ve largely used the money to replace their best player on players that aren’t in their top 5 or top 10 players.

the motto to me is dont sell your best player ever when he’s got 4 years on his contract

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,801 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Not doubting that, but I just don't think that he is a player that suits the way that Liverpool want to play for example lack of intensity, interplay, pressing. They are not things that Isak offered under Slot when he did actually take to the pitch, under Slot.

But maybe it was Slot that restricted him there, as there was of lot of similar problems when other players played as the CF under Slot like Nunez, Jota & Gakpo. Ekitike didn't really have the same problems as he was a bit more of a free spirited type player who would go searching for the ball.

Well players have forced it before tbf and player power is arguably stronger than ever.

Didnt Diego Costa just refuse to return to London and stayed in Brazil until he got his transfer to Atletico after a falling out with Conte?

I think either Koscielny or Squillaci literally just refused to show up to their teams CL qualifier (despite being named in the official matchday squad at least if not the actual starting XI) to avoid being cup tied on the eve of their move to Arsenal.

And of course the infamous Gallas transfer to Arsenal.

Its rare but can happen so Isak might have been a huge problem had Newcastle kept him.

Is Isak fully fit now? Saw a photo on twitter a few weeks ago and his knee looked totally weird… could have been just a fake photo of course.

World cup might be good for him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,821 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Scored an absolute screamer for Sweden last week. Probably not 100% fit yet but will probably be good to go for the World Cup after their camp.

World Cup will be good for him.

Am hoping it will also be for Havertz and Merino.

Every club must have a few players who havent played much lately that the tournament might help to hit the ground running in August.
