Surprised we're 3 favourites at 11-2 to win league.

Of course, if we did return to a decent standard, and got a measly 79pts, that was enough technically to win the league this season, with City second on 78pts/

So not impossible. Especially if City dip with Pep gone. We need goals, goals win games, keep it simple. Arsenal scored 71 last season, which seems very very low for a title win.

If you finish ahead of second what position would you be in.

If Arsenal finished on 79pts would they have still won the league…. .

VVD's view on the impact Jota's death had on the squad.

Arsenal could've won it on 79 points. We couldn't… we'd have needed to get more than whatever points Arsenal got (in this case, 85+). You can't just pull out the league winner and insert yourself into their circumstances - you do actually have to go and get more points than them.

Just going to put the all of what was in that tweet from Virgil here,

'Heavy stuff from Virgil Van Dijk:

“This was the toughest season of my career. Especially on the mental level. It just kept going up and down. We almost never had the consistent feeling and level you strive for.

As a group, as a club, as a player, as a person. As a team, we had very good matches, and then suddenly things went downhill again. Then you basically can’t go on.

This year, a lot has come our way at Liverpool. From the moment I received the call with the terrible news about Diogo until the final match, in which we said goodbye to Salah and Robertson. I sat on the grass watching those two guys, with whom I had played for eight years.

I have never experienced anything like it in all those years at Liverpool. It happened the way it happened."'

Having never played or competed at the highest level I am not going to pretend I know what it takes at the top of whatever sport you play. But from all accounts the margins at the top are small between winning and losing, competing and falling apart. The challenges the team, coaches and players, had to deal with was something not many have faced. Teams have lost teammates before in a season but for us it happened just before pre-season where you build your base fitness for the season.

By some accounts our players and staff just didn't seem interested at the time. Then not being there physically would have had a toll mentally before even adding in the tragedy they still had in their minds. My hope is this will have a positive effect for us next season. The players will have dealt with something not many have and hopefully they will take this with them as a positive. It could be a negative as well and it could weigh them down again, but hopefully not.

I cannot help it, I am an optimist when it comes to Liverpool.

If he's going to set up his team to keep the fans happy rather than setting them up by whatever players he'll have are capable of he won't last too long. But that's not going to happen.

That's what transfer windows are for. We'll sign a number of players this summer.

Konate reportly getting 400k a week at Real and a 17m signing on fee. If true we hadn't a hope of keeping him.

The UK Times reporting that Fulham approached Slot and he said no, so it's not taken long for him to get an offer

If we’re comparing like for like (your phrase) and it was wrong of the previous poster to choose a specific season for comparison then surely you’d say ok lets look at an overall record. Not just fire back with a season of your own.
Its online, people can go look. Diaz had a better record overall by a distance.
Harder worker too, hes never stops running and fighting.
I’m not sure why your reply to that poster was so popular, maybe Gakpo has some fans on here or maybe i missed something but i’d imagine most clubs if given the choice would choose Diaz ahead of Gakpo very fast.

So in 148 appearances for Liverpool Luis Diaz had 55 goal contributions.

In 180 appearances for Liverpool Cody Gakpo has 71 goal contributions.

    *If Gemini is accurate.

With all due respect to Fulham, that's a big step down from Liverpool. Also I'd imagine he wants a break to refresh and reset before taking a new job. He will probably look to get a more prestigious job in Europe, and maybe come back to EPL down the line.

Ah yeah, I'm sure he'll get something decent, just kind of nice to see that he's getting offers straight away

In one season, Diaz’s Father was kidnapped so probably skews the numbers somewhat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,054 ✭✭✭✭noodler

The point is that Gakpo's previous numbers easily make him a worthy squad player and we have other transfer priorities for the first team

They used the example of Diaz in 24/25 against the example of Gakpo in 25/26 to show how much better Diaz was and how Gakpo could never compare… except in 24/25 Gakpo was right there next to Diaz at Liverpool, scoring even more goals, in 600 fewer minutes. Hence like-for-like. Same lads in the same team at the same time.

In their shared Liverpool time across their two full seasons together in 23/24 and 24/25, Gakpo scored more goals in 1200 fewer minutes — 34 goals and 14 assists for Gakpo, and 30 goals and 15 assists for Diaz, using the same all-comps figures the initial poster used.

Very similar records across their careers really, much of a muchness comparing their times at Porto and PSV respectively. Diaz obviously much better this year - but that’s the point, that one bad season in a struggling team doesn’t make Gakpo a bad player.

Point I'm generally making, is that the 106 goal, 100 pts title wins are not very likely going forward considering how competitive the league currently is. Last season if we only managed 75pts, we'd still have won league, and this year if Arsenal only managed 79pts they'd still have won it.

I'm not arguing we'd have won it this season with 79pts, I just said Arsenal only needed it. With our squad, and a few signings, we can hit these 79 - 84 numbers , the days of needing 100 pts is gone.

I get what you are trying to say, but it was just strange that you used the 2nd place points to point out how much we would have required to win the league. But we only needed 79 points to finish above 2nd place this past season and not win the league as you need to get more than 1st place to win the league. I think only the winners can really look down on how much fewer points they needed to win the league. For the rest you add one point to where you are hoping to finish to see how many was needed. So Brighton needed 61 points to finish in the top 5 but we only required 58 to stay 5th. If Brighton got 58 they would not have finished 5th.

Comparing Gakpo and Diaz when they were both at Liverpool is meaningless imo. When they were both here they supported each other. They offered different things against different teams, at different times. When diaz left, Gakpo was over relied on with some support from a child and a 10 who didn't fancy the left.

I'm not interested in judging ANY of our players this season. Their job was to climb a mountain bit all they were given were roller skates.

We need 7 players this summer and only then can we properly judge the players and manager.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,271 ✭✭✭hawaii501

Yeah I agree with all of this, Gakpo came on and played well or Diaz came on and played well so much so that people weren't fussed with Diaz leaving.

The fact we never replaced Diaz was the issue and 'blocking' Ngumoha's pathway for last season.

I think Slot was correct in not overplaying Rio but we should have really signed a Salah replacement who could have rotated with Gakpo for the year.

I'd like Gakpo to stay for at least another year and a top winger brought in as Rio will be playing more games this year.

    I think RB/DM/CB/RW are 4 minimum requirements.

It may only be paper talk but the fact Rio is getting interest I think he will have to be treated as a starter next season or he could start looking to move to somewhere that will start him as other teams are not afraid to start young players. That’s not to say I don’t fully agree with minding him last season but I think it’s going to have to change for next season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,988 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

I still don't think he's good enough yet to start week in week out, if we want get back challenging. IMO we need 2 top class wide players, 1 to finally replace Diaz, and the other obviously replace Salah.

Rio should have a similar role for us next season, just with some more gradual minutes.

    Those Konate wages are madness.
Good defender but shocking on the ball. He was a big problem in possession this year for us when teams stood off him and pressed Van Dijk.

All of our attackers are going to be expected to press in a coordinated manner next season. We just had Szobozlai running around like a headless chicken on his own the season just gone.

Rio's biggest task will be to become better off the ball and that more than anything else may limit his minutes next season.
