Even by Shane’s standards, a three putt from 2 and a half feet on the 18th is beyond ridiculous. His head must be totally scrambled.🤯

Hopefully, he’ll manage to get some sleep tonight. He seems to be hitting lots of good shots, but two double bogeys, including the aforementioned three putt and two visits to the water on the par 5 11th have ruined what would otherwise have been an excellent card.

Shane obviously has been a far more consistent golfer than Willett and has competed at the top of the sport for far longer.

But ultimately most golfing careers are judged on major wins and other tour wins and on that metric the 2 of them are actually very similar. Shane has 2 wins on the PGA tour as well as his major where as Willett has none to go with his Masters but has more European Tour wins and some big ones too.

Shane is clearly the better golfer and has been near the top of way more leaderboards but unless Shane can get himself another couple of tour wins the footprint and legacy they’ll leave will be more similar than some of us would like to think.

final round today encapsulates Shanes recent career, birdies and an eagle get him onto the bottom of front page of leaderboard but inability to grind leads to succession of bogeys, so 22nd is his current level which is far and away better than any other Irish pro and most europeans bar Rory, its just that its so tantalising close to so much better its gut renching when it falls apart.

Currently 13 European golfers ranked above Shane, 5 in the top 10 in the world so hard to agree Shane is ahead of most Europeans bar Rory.

It would depend on how many Europeans are in the rankings surely?

It's strange how he consistently continues to **** up what would have been great rounds.

There are 14 Europeans above Shane in the OWGR now.

Shane has been top 50 in the world for most of the last six years. He's been a top golfer for a long time now.

His major win doesn't help his ranking now, it's his performances over a much shorter period of time.

A PGA tour win will jump you 30 spots in the rankings too. If Shane manages to finish off one of the tournaments he contends in he'll be inside the top 20.

The poster said it was hard to agree that Shane was ahead of most Europeans and gave the numbers of Europeans ahead of him. I'd wager there are far more Europeans below him in any rankings and he therefor is ahead of "most Europeans".

well that’s a pointless statement. By that measure I’m ahead of most Europeans and I play off 18!

it’s a concern that he’s not one of the top 12 Europeans in the world. He needs to sort that. Sentimentality will only go so far when it comes to getting on the team for Adare. I really hope he does it but he needs to turn a a few of these weeks into great ones

So for Shane fans tomorrow is a big day , hes 4 behind , not critical that he wins but he has battled really well for 3 rounds ,needs to continue this and deliver a performance as he has collapsed a few times this season from a similiar position, I would take a top 5 for him now but hoping for something better,🙏🙏🙏

Ouch! Starts with a 6 to drop out of the top 20. Let’s hope he can steady the ship.

I haven't watched this tournament(though I've followed the leaderboard and listened to the reports on the news) and in a way I'm glad I haven't, as Shane has proved extremely frustrating again. Starting with a bogey today and Friday I think it was when he finished bogey, bogey. It might have been Des Cahill who said the 18th was the easiest hole on the course, playing almost a shot under par, then along comes Shane.

I still very much want to be proved wrong on a Sunday evening, but I repeat what I previously posted, he will never win another tournament.

+3 for the back nine unfortunately...

worrying trend continues, perhaps this is just how most 40 year old pros drift away albeit there are plenty of exceptions to this rule.

I understand your frustration, but Shane has been written off before and has come back. And contributors to Boards were adamant that Rory would never win another Major.

So you can’t be certain that Shane won’t win again and constantly posting that it’s not going to happen is a bit irritating, to be honest. No offence intended.

He'll be going for a good week this week at the us open.

His putting and temperament aren't good enough for Shinnecock.

He was putting great earlier in the season, that can be fixed. Temperament is another thing though.

Will miss the cut mostly because he 3 putted from 3 feet for double. But also doesnt score enuf birdies to mitigate the inevitable dropped shots on a hard course like this.2 over for the par 5s is not good enough .

Just not happening for him this season unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,015 ✭✭✭almostover

He needs to find some form over the next 12 months, it would be a terrible pity if he misses a home Ryder cup.

It's not like he's having a horrendous season. He had a second, and eight and a few top 25s.

He's dropped in the world rankings but two good results will put him back where he was.

Clearly the concern is his mind, blowing up will kill you and he keeps doing it. He needs a sports psychologist he can have a relationship with .

Id love to see what his seasons winnings would be this year if his rounds stopped after 54 holes instead of 72.

He seems to melt down usually in the back 9 of the last day
