Drove that way in 2021 so not much I can advise apart from sitting on the left of the car for the best view when driving through Paris :)

Domaine des Ormes : holidays in Brittany, golf, horse riding, hotel, camping - Official site

I cant help you with the route but maybe check out the above. Very similar activities to a Center Parcs onsite but only 2 hours from Cherbourg. We have been twice and really enjoyed it.

Went last year and I think we are going to pull the trigger on it again for August. Better booking through Eurocamp if you want kids activities/workshops, although we found it was really only suited for very young kids. Ferry crossing coming in at slightly less than last year. Im guessing demand is down in mid-late August, which would correspond to Michael O'Leary on Bloomberg earlier this week stating the same for Ryanair. He even mentioned some potential discounting if sales dont pick up.

I was holding back on booking the campsite in the hope it would go down, I contacted the camp site and they gave me a discounted rate so I booked. The two weeks I'm going in mid August have gone up in price again since start of week.

We did almost this exact drive last year, sailed into Cherbourg and stayed very close to Center parcs. I don't think you'd do it in 4.5 hours. Our ferry arrived in at around midday or a bit after and it was after 7pm when we arrived. We did a briefish McDonald's pit stop. We were pulling a trailer but still doing decent speeds. Traffic was very heavy around Paris - following Google Maps was a bit dicey, luckily we didn't miss any lanes but almost did. We're very used to driving and navigating in France.

If I was going next year, I'd definitely look into the new Hibernia ferry and maybe spend your arrival night nearish the port or north of Paris and then on to Center parcs in the morning.

Everyone has been very quiet over the past few days.

Are we too hot in an unusually hot French May or an unusually hot Irish May?! Near Montpellier today & it’s been 33. Feels more

I'm trying to dampen my excitement.

Got Center Parcs next week. Once that's over, can focus on France.

Saying that, I did make a list for myself earlier, of what I plan to pack 🙈

Next I need to start thinking about jobs that need to be done before we leave :D

Heading over Friday evening from Rosslare to Cherbourg on the Cotentin. Going to Des Ormes for two weeks. Cannot wait.

    Anyone else heading out Friday?

Went to Bilbao on Wednesday.. The crossing was the smoothest I've ever had in nearly 20 going... Didn't even feel I was on a ship.. Weather was beautiful...C-Club lounge food I think was even better than last year. Abused the free wine... Got priority disembarkation and was 3 rd car of and on the road in no time. Weather about 35 degs for the first few days.. Having fun... I'll be jealous of all of ye when you all go later in the summer... Saw 3 separate large pods of dolphins over the trip racing towards the ship to ride the bow wave.. Amazing

6.1kWp south facing, South of Cork City

Hi all, we're travelling Rosslare to Cherbourg Friday, is it possible to bring a travel kettle and something like an electric lunchbox onboard to use to make some food and drinks, due to food intolerances I'd rather bring our own food to eat. As we're driving nine hours south and the docking time in Cherbourg has been delayed it'd be good to have a full belly when we set off. Or is there an option to heat up food in a microwave onboard?

Also we will be coming back the day before sailing, does any nice towns villages a few hours south of Cherbourg that we could overnight in?

Excited now but have a zoo of animals to organise before we leave 🤣 roll on Friday and that first (of many) large glasses of vino 🤞

I'm not sure if they have microwaves on board nowadays. However, nothing stopping you bringing those items you mentioned into the cabin as far as I know. Just think you'll need continental adapters in the cabin.

we'll have the adaptors thanks, it'll make for an easier crossing if we can have our own food

Just did the Rosslare Cherbourg route on the Cotentin last Friday evening and they have microwaves for customers use in the cafeteria. Food was great too.

what do you need kettle for? If it’s just tea then save the hassle as the cafes will pour you a cup of hot water for free and then just add your tea bag / milk yourself. We always bring a small travel fridge to allow us do cereal for kids, only challenge is they are small and don’t take a full 2 let milk cartoon (we use some then can force it by squashing it a little)

A insulated cooler bag with a couple of frozen bottles of water will keep milk cold enough for overnight also.

Yes, or just freeze the milk itself (after pouring out a little) and it's chilled for the morning.

    Hi there,

Just a question about toll-tags. Has anyone ever used one? We're going for a month and our journey will involve a long drive down and back so thought I'd sign up for a toll-tag to save a few precious minutes at each toll booth. I ordered the BipandGo one. Has anyone any experience? I've just read about someone having a nightmare with the Fulli one where the tag reader didn't pick it up time and again.

Ah wasn't sure about the situation with hot water, heating food etc, ferry newbie here so best to ask the seasoned travellers 🤗

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,615 ✭✭✭wassie

Where are you going? If its Brittanny you wont need a toll-tag. The rest of France you will. Have a BipandGo myself and it was grand.

Mammoth drive from Roscoff to Montpellier. Gonna break it into two days.

We've had ours from ATMB for 12 years, works fine everywhere.

Hi all, the crossing from Rosslare to Cherbourg tomorrow evening is looking very rough, force 8/9. When do BF normally let you know if crossing is being canceled? We're travelling from NW Donegal so would be leaving at 9am and have two weeks accommodation booked in south of France, what's the usual procedure if they cancel? Refund or option to travel the following day's crossing? We can cancel place in France and get a full refund before 4 tomorrow or maybe I'm just being overly worried, first time ferry user so not sure about it all.

    Thanks for any incoming advice

We’ve done Roscoff to Costa Brava the last two years with a Bip & Go and it’s great, works a treat. We’re in the Loire valley now and this is year 3 with the tag and still working perfectly, so much handier than trying to stretch out the passenger window with a credit card 🤣

Your best bet might be to ring their customer service line just to be sure. I’ve had texts a day or so in advance about a delay but have never experienced a cancelled crossing so can’t say for that.

not sure if you’ve seen the sailing update section on their site but it would be worth keeping an eye on. And also pick up some sea sickness tablets for the crossing. I recommend Kwells, I use them myself as I’m useless on anything other than a flat calm trip. Only caveat is they do cause drowsiness so bear that in mind for whoever is driving.

brilliant. How long was your holiday? We're doing a month so the drive won't eat too much out of the holiday.
