Jingle wise they left John Bowman's programme alone

A friend of mine works across the road from RTE, in St Vincents. They have the same issue, with no one taking accountability or responsibility in running the place.

They only take responsibility for pushing people around. They never take responsibility when something goes tit's up.

With RTE finances back in the spotlight and them soon to be coming under the C&AG, I wonder will RTE GOLD ever come under the spotlight ? Paying Dave Fanning 1k a week to literally phone=in a few links and offering Ray Darcy the same looks extremely wasteful to me.

They tried to close RTE Gold before but there was enough backlash from listeners that it was kept.

Ray told them to shove it up their hole (proper Kildare man response). He kept his ammo dry till last week and let them have it. Alas the Radio 1 identity is being erased in a mire of insipid techno jingles, which have the longevity of a dropped ice cream. They're not even memorable, I defy anyone to hum any of them.

The forum is titled “Broadcasting” - I think that’s broad enough to encompass radio, in the context of a thread discussing RTE.

Very much made up by the stars of GOLD, they happily threw the rest of the Digital Stations under the bus, can anyone honestly say RTÉ have kept their promise of continuing those channels under the guise of Podcasting?

You'd have to ask who the insiders at RTÉ are.

The daily TV show Today might be going on its final break for the summer months as RTÉ think its "Old Fashioned" … they are so late to the game on this really.

    https://evoke.ie/2026/05/26/entertainment/rte-today-show

An insider exclusively told EVOKE: 'Shows being off for the summer is very old-fashioned and it's to do with the old regime in RTÉ, and this decision is down to the new regime in RTE coming in, which is something positive. The Today show is bucking all the trends.'

AFAICT the ratings are holding steady rather than growing massively.

In 2024, Today continued to be one of the most popular daytime programmes with an average of approximately 100,000 viewers each day and a whopping 625,000 RTÉ Player streams that year.

That's just 3,765 per episode (166), that's far from whopping.

The show is going off the air on Friday, but there is talk that next year it will go all year round.

This has been highlighted before on Extra / Evoke

RTÉ Today is pulling in between 26-30 per cent share now, so when you go off the air, then, you're putting on 'Murder She Wrote' and then there's only a three per cent share.

There insider has no clue, that is not the type of show that the replace Today with or have in the past, indeed MSW has been airing on TG4 for the past 2 decades now.

It just makes sense. If you look at what's happening in Virgin Media and in the BBC, they are all year round, and we should be.

    Serious I didn't realize it was 1999!

I was thinking about yesterday's announcement about Tracey Clifford moving to RTE Gold, wouldn't it make more sense to move Shay Byrne or Lillian Smith to Gold and put Clifford on early mornings on Radio 1? She would suit that Today FM/Newstalk esq demographic that R1 is trying to attract with their recent makeover.

Yeah that story about Today running through the summer was in the press last year as well, seems to be an idea to get brownie points for increasing annual broadcasting hours from Cork. Who remembers that In the late oos/early 10s, RTE 1 went through an insane amount of afternoon show titles/formats within 5 years? they had "The afternoon show" "4 live" "Seoighe & O'Shea" "Seoighe" and The Daily Show. When "Today" started, it was a very wooden format with Maura and DOS sitting behind a desk and less than an hour long iirc. I bet they'd have given the show a more creative title if they knew it would last so long, considering they already had a radio show called Today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

It's a very wooden show in general.

It is the same rotation every day.

    1. Intro
    2. Talk of Today (each day with rotating guests, who are often back)
    3. Kitchen
    4. Weather
    5. back to the couch usual for some nostalgic look back
    6. Kitchen / maybe gardening
    7. Fashion
    8. Weather
    9. back to the couch, for a talk / discussion / interview
    10. competition winner

A huge number of guest presenters for some reason.

No vets, little to no music/live music (it does happen but rare), no health or exercise, it isn't LIVE @ 3

Just flicking last night and see France 24 being shown on RTE news channel which is a much better fit than euronews overnight. Don't know what RTE one or RTE 2 had overnight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Euronews was never very good TBH, but It's really got worse over the years.

Just checked the schedules and it’s still listed as Euronews overnight. Odd. RTE had a stake in Euronews at one point, but I don’t think they have had for many years now.

TG4 switched from Euronews to France 24 when they were spun off from RTE in 2007, and they still carry a vestigial hour of it from 5-6am.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,650 ✭✭✭galtee boy

BBC News would be great if they carried it, but I guess they would have to pay more for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

In fairness to TG4 they have expanded their late night schedule.

Often wondered how much it would really cost. RTÉ have a business relationship with the BBC, but even to change the channel every hour or 2.

RTÉ NEWS NOW remains a bad service.

Just checked back on both RTE 1 & 2 and both showed Euronews, so will check news channel later to see what they show tonight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 302 ✭✭AJB39

The RTÉ News channel is indeed showing France 24 tonight. They must have just started showing it this week. Even the EPG still says they should be showing Euronews. This is a good development as France 24 is a proper news channel unlike Euronews which is just a skeleton news service.

The whole RTE Gold thing is very weird imo, RTE obviously don't regard or treat it as proper radio station as they left two daytime slots vacant for months to a year. It must be soul destroying to get sent there from 2fm but it begs the question are RTE/the government really serious about shrinking RTE's workforce by 400 by 2028 if every unwanted 2fm jock is going to be retained and given a job on Gold?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39 bpotogo

There was an nonsense claim by Minister Patrick O'Donavan recently that RTE won't be getting any more state top-ups when the current deal ends, We know this is nonsense because even if they could work a miracle to get licence fee collection rates back to 2019 levels, it wouldn't be enough money to keep them going, there is fat chance their total staff will be reduced by 400 either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I only listened to the new show yesterday, but is it a prerecord?

Correct the licence fee numbers are significantly down, there is no way the government could pull funding.

Really there is no really change in RTÉ and most of the public can see this.

IMO it should be split up, no need for the monolith that it is, with a bad reputation.

And what does splitting up achieve though? Separate HR, IT, finance, other corporate service functions, duplication of these functions across multiple organisations? Needing separate buildings as now-competitors don’t want to be housed with each other?

The French split up their equivalent of RTE (ORTF) in the 1970s (and privatised their equivalent to RTE One while they were at it); it’s since been regarded as the worst mistake ever made in French broadcasting, and they’ve spent most of the last fifty years trying to put as much of it back together as they can, though they’ve never achieved the final step of re-merging France TV and Radio France.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,145 ✭✭✭RoTelly

What does keeping it together achieve?

    1. TG4, it is already set up to deliver the shared services you talk about, move RnaG and the Children's Channel to them.
    2. NCH, again already set up to deliver the shared services, indeed a successful transition of the NSO shows the CO and Lyric FM could both move into their natural home.
    3. Screen Ireland could takeover the running of RTÉ TV, covering 1, 2 and the player.
    4. RTÉ Radio and 2RN, retaining the current RTÉ set up for shared services
    5. A shared news service like that of PA, providing content to the above services.

Competitors often rent out facilities together, no reason why TV can remain in the TV building at the 2RN facilities.

RTÉ have proven they are not suitable as a public service media provide. Time we moved on from this monolith.

Interesting is it a case of RTÉ not promoting their services? Or are their huge swaths of people that are just using "dogdy" boxes for standard TV.

I wonder if they can breakdown which services they were using to view the match?

I can't read the full article - how could this be established?
I doubt many more than 1 million people in ROI even watched the game full stop.

Seems a very high number given there was FTA coverage here, some people here pay for TV packages that would have included the game. Different matter in the UK where there was no FTA coverage.
