Torn between Tesla Model Y and Xpeng G6.

I'm currently trying to decide between these two models. On the face of it, the Model Y seems to have stronger hardware, more polished software, and the backing of a more established brand. It might also be the more future-proof choice when it comes to actual Full Self-Driving (FSD), whereas the Xpeng hardware currently in Europe don't support it.

On the other hand, the Xpeng G6 includes a lot of bells and whistles as standard. With the Tesla, you only get those extra features if you step up to the Premium model, but doing that pushes the price outside the bracket for the VRT relief and SEAI grant. Tesla doesn't offer a standard range Premium model anymore.

Our driving is mostly short local trips with the odd longer journey thrown in, so long-range capability isn't essential for me. What I really need is enough space for my partner, our toddler, and the dog and all the stuff typically we transport with them.

One thing pulling me toward the Xpeng G6 is that a wealth of driver assistant features are included as standard. On the Tesla, things like auto-parking and automatic lane changes are now locked behind a monthly FSD subscription (which is currently €99).

Aesthetics wise, the Model Y looks nicer to me.

Data connectivity is another difference: Tesla charges a €10 monthly subscription after the first month free, while Xpeng apparently gives you 12 to 18 months free before charging a similar rate. Plus, the Xpeng comes out of the box with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Admittedly, these last two points aren't a major deal-breaker for me, but it's a nice bonus.

I think Tesla will hold its price better and no enforced scheduled maintenance for warranty

Does the xpeng require scheduled maintenance to hold on to warranty?

    according to AI :

Service IntervalsTo keep the warranty valid, you must stick to the following intervals: [1]

    • Time interval: Every 12 months.
    • Distance interval: Every 20,000 km.
    • Rule: Whichever limit comes first

What is Covered and Inspected ? Because the G6 is a battery electric vehicle (BEV), routine servicing is less intensive than a combustion engine car. A typical maintenance appointment includes: [1, 2]

    • Battery Diagnostics: Comprehensive state-of-health tracking for the main traction battery.
    • Brake Checks: Inspection of traditional friction brake pads and rotors.
    • Fluid Top-offs: Checking battery coolant loop levels and windscreen washer fluid.
    • Safety Inspections: Routine checks on tyres, suspension components, and wiper blades. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Where to Service Under European Block Exemption Regulations, you are not legally forced to use a main dealer for standard servicing. However, the work must be performed strictly to XPENG guidelines using approved parts.

I looked at both and went with the Y in the end.

It came down to several factors, I sat into the G6, didnt drive it, didnt click with the car, the finance details werent in Xpengs favor and I wasnt impressed with the car in general. Its nice but didnt work for me. Drive both, do the sums and see what you want.

We did a test drive in the Y but went with the Xpeng G6 and absolutely love it. Three kids (ages 9-16), two dogs and forever carrying loads of stuff in the boot (camping, fishing, golf, football stuff etc). It hasn't put a foot wrong since we got it last August. We've done 23k in it, trips all around the country - handles motorways and back roads very well and it is surprisingly good in towns. It has a smaller turning circle than you'd expect so very manoeuvrable. Have used the auto park a lot (more than I thought I would) and the remote parking/recall is handy in tight shopping centre spaces for getting kids in etc.

For us we prefer the looks of the G6 and having drivers display, android auto etc was preferable. The Y has a bigger boot due to the subfloor but the G6 boot is still huge. Seats are unbelievable comfortable and everything is so customisable with the xcombos

Our was a company car so finance offers weren't a consideration

Auto parking is a gimmick that you will absolutely never use so don't let that or auto lane change sway your decision

SIL recently bought a G6, just a much more interesting car the than the Y IMO. The interior in white feels premium and all the touchpoints feel like genuine quality. Autoparking gets whenever possible, is quick to respond and has been faultless. Massaging seats, ambient lighting, wellness modes make for a super relaxing drive. I'd take one over a Y all day long.

I Didn't consider the Xpeng, coming from a Model 3, I knew and trusted Tesla to be the right fit. I got the AWD Y Juniper last year.

Didn't like the single stalk, so I hardwired my own aftermarket one for gear shifter. Wanted a display for carplay in front of me, so added a S3XY Dash. Didn't want the bing bong sounds every time the car went above the posted speed limit, so I installed a COMMANDER module to turn those sounds off. I wanted convenient access to the big frunk, so I installed a hansshow power frunk kit.

Tesla has an insane amount of aftermarket options to enhance the car and get rid of some of the reasons that would otherwise be a reason not to buy. No way around the subscription for FSD anymore, unless you buy a car that has it already. We have a Model S with EAP and have never used autopark. Options are nice, but overpriced if you're never going to use them.
