If Hughes and Edwards used sophisticated, detailed analytical tools to identify Slot as the best man for the job, how do we trust their judgement that Iraola is now the best man for the job just two years later?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭CONSI

You could argue Slot was the right man for the job, we have to remember he won a league, if every manager we brought in won a league then we would all be very happy. Something went badly wrong this year, be it the manager, players, outside influences, injuries etc…but time to move on now, looks like it will be Iralola, so lets see what the summer brings and look forward to next season, which we were not doing this time a few weeks ago

Well he won the Premier League in his first season so,,,,,,,,,,

But isn't the narrative that's he's not up to it. Not an elite manager. Surely this should have been picked up in the detailed analysis before he was hired? The analysis hardly showed he was the perfect fit, (winning the league immediately which justified the decision to hire him) only for it to be shown to be completely wrong a few months later?

we will never know what the full impact of the jota tragedy on the manager and squad was, it put us in a spin that slot couldnt get out of but clearly he is a good manager, it just wasnt going to work out at liverpool with how things have gone.

I think it was clear he wasn't up to turning it around from the state it was left in this year but it's exceptional circumstances with not only jota but also Trent and to a lesser extent diaz. Add to that the very specific positions that has multiple injuries, a very small squad and some players in terrible form for a variety of reasons, some of which are caused by the previous issues.

I could see him at bayern or Inter in the future doing well. It doesn't always work out. Tuchel amd emre spring to mind. Happens with players all the time.

If we got CL with the worst season in a decade with nothing going right and a coach who seemed to be at complete odds with the football we want to aee then I'm.not sure we missing out on 4th/5th should be our biggest concern.

    We'll see though.

Klopp's first full season we got 4th on the last day but what an incredibly different season it was to this one.

Yes, 76 points that season. 16 points more than 2015/16. Real upward trajectory and a sense of something great building.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 416 ✭✭redoctober

Yes. Just having a look back there. We were top after 11 games on 26 points and had beaten Chelsea, who would be champions, away from home!! Massive turn-around from B-rod. I remember a friend of mine who's an arsenal fan texting me saying Liverpool look like the winners this season. Unfortunately we tailed off. Drew a good few games and lost a few in Jan/Feb which allowed Chelsea to pull away. Still there were great signs and we were a joy to watch:

    4-3 away to Arsenal

    4-1 against Leicester

    5-1 against Hull

    6-1 against Watford

    4-1 Stoke

    4-0 away to West Ham

And this was before we added Salah, VVD and Alisson!!!

I'd be more expecting a new DM to play instead of Jones to be honest because that's what we really need there.

From the commentary, this looks like big news as the club really did fight hard to keep him away from Man City & Real Madrid amongst others. He really looked like he was going and the comments at the time were that he didn't see youth been given a chance under Slot. I wonder if Slot leaving has influenced his decision?

I'm not sure if it's a typo or not, but Pearce is reporting that he was offered over £50,000 a week at other clubs (£2.6m a year).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,766 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

I was reading after Slot was let go that he wasn't actually spending any time with the youth teams which isn't a great showing compared to Klopp.

I don't know a huge amount about Iraola, but it does appear that he is great at working with young players - so hopefully a good sign for the academy guys.

How do we think he would use the fringe players that were virtually frozen out under Slot? I'm talking about Endo, Elliott and Chiesa specifically. A gift that Klopp had was making every player feel important to the team, even when they weren't a starter.

Has AI had a good record of utilising a squad? I would guess so given how he coped with losing so many first-team players last summer at Bournemouth.

Szobo has two years left on his contract,if he refuses to sign a new one and an offer comes in for him,do the club take it? Whatever happens he can't be let run down his contract like Trent and Konate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,803 ✭✭✭John arse

Will they still be at the club next season I wonder?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,331 ✭✭✭✭8-10

Chiesa should be gone, Como likely. He's been with us long enough and not shown anything. A shame, but we can do better especially for that level of wages

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,295 ✭✭✭54and56

The club can only take an offer if it's from a club Sobo actually wants to go to.

If Sobo (or any other player) wants to run their contract down to leave on a free, there's nothing the club can do as the player does not have to agree to move to another club before the end of his contract.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,917 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

I would think so. Players with aspirations, whether warranted or not, have no problem letting a year run down so if you let it get to that point by not making the hard choice a couple windows before, you'll just risk falling foul. Something we seem to be blind to - at least outwardly anyway, I suspect in the case of Trent we weighed the near zero return against what he would actually offer us on the pitch. Probably Konate to a lesser extent, but I'm sure Trent's exit was well sign-posted to the hierarchy.

No World Cup in the way, so I'd have the powers that be put it to him this summer, if they haven't already. If there's no positive vibe, put the feelers out there. If nobody is biting, leaving it a year will be a risk IMO. Any transfer a year from now wouldn't be as lucrative, though the contract cancellation would offset it somewhat. If he's still in the frame for a BIG move 12 months from now, chances are he'd probably be encouraged to sit it out for the big dough.

I never understand that attitude when it comes to players performing at the club

I'd much rather keep him while he's under the control of the contract he agreed to

If we were a small club it might make more sense to cash in, but we're not

We aren't a small club looking to cash in, but there are certain aspects we can't offer like the other big boys out there. That's just the reality of elite football and has always generally been the case.

I've no truck with keeping Szob, preferably under a new contract. He's a big character but far from the finished article. In a lacking season, I think he provided more big moments as opposed to big performances, but I'd be excited to see him under a new regime with a manager using him effectively, not to mention positionally. If he's left as is, then we'll probably get another couple seasons of that, which is fine, but runs the risk. He could have a stinker next season and find himself in and out with an agent banging on our door for a new deal. Just no guarantees......other than the fact he's got a couple years at whatever rate he's on right now.

Nobody is saying flog him, it's just talk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,359 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Whatever about players leaving us for free, I'd like to see us do more to find good deals with available free agents.

The last free agent we signed who wasn't a backup goalkeeper is Joel Matip 10 years ago.

The year before Matip we signed Milner, 2 years before Milner we signed Kolo Toure. We had a steady stream of free agents coming in and making some sort of an impact, we've since just stopped.

In 2019, we couldn't match the salary that PSG offered Adrien Rabiot. Evan Ndicka cited the guarantee of regular first team football as deciding factor in his decision to join Roma in 2023.

ESPN Brazil backing up your opinion re Alisson,

“The goalkeeper’s plan is to fulfil the final year of his contract and, throughout the season, he will evaluate whether he will remain with the Reds or leave on a free transfer in the middle of next year,” ESPN’s report explains.

"Of course no team plays 3 games a week". Thank you. That's all I ever said and you've finally admitted I'm correct and I'm not making false assertions as you claimed before.

It is not a straw an argument. It is a semantic argument. One that I only made cos it was quiet that day and I never expected to still arguing a black and white point 3 days later…

It's like how there is no such thing as a "busted flush", there is only a busted flush draw but people keep calling it a busted flush.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 487 ✭✭505_

Have a bad feeling Szob could go the same way as TAA and Konate. 2 years left need to deal with it a lot better than those two.Surely some lessons have been learnt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,032 ✭✭✭SodiumCooled

Leaving the semantics aside are you acknowlegding or not that managing a team across multiple comps is a bigger challenge? As if you aren't you would be in a very small minority - it's one of the main negatives being discussed across the board for Iraola along with managing a team looking to dominate possession rather than be the "smaller" team looking to upset.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,995 ✭✭✭mormank

Surprise surprise 🙄 Tbh his family never making the move across was a massive red flag for me right from the beginning. When thins are going well no one cared but when tings were going badly to hear he was jetting off home regularly to see the family instead of, like ya know, doing his job is a bit of a joke tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,995 ✭✭✭mormank

    Obviously it's a bigger challenge!

All I said is that no team plays "3 games a week" and it does my head in that it's become common parlance, much like the term "busted flush". There is no such thing as a busted flush just like no professional team plays 3 games a week.

It was a quiet day when I posted it and someone else had just used the term "busted flush" so I decided enough was enough! 😁

People on this thread are constantly misinterpreting posts by other posters and arguing points they never even made. Just read the words I typed and respond to them. No where did I ever say or imply its not a bigger challenge to manage Liverpool than it is Bournemouth. That's insane!

Konate did an interview in France and talked about how the death of Jota and his dad lead to depression.

We as fans will never understand how much Jota and his brothers tragic deaths effected the players the management and everyone connected to the club.

That’s why when I see fans calling Slot a fraud they are the only ones that are frauds for me.
