Probably just David Walsh realistically. Connacht posted interviews with most academy players on YouTube and a good few mentioned Walsh as one to watch. Obviously you can't read too much into that, but I do remember Fiachna Barrett picked out Billy Bohan before his debut, and before he was on anyone's radar.

Is Liam McNamee not possible? Is he gone from Ireland?

I'm not sure if Leo is finished school yet. If he is he's already big and strong enough to play at senior level. He might need time to learn things though.

Seems unlikely. Not sure what the story is with him but he hasn't played AIL or Connacht Eagles this year as far as I know. Could be injured.

I think the quality of what we have is under rated.

Darragh Murray is very quickly becoming one of the first names on our team sheet each week and his performances while lacking anything too flashy are consistently high quality and he is well able for 80 minutes. Think we will be seeing him remain in and around Ireland squads for the next few years. 1300 + minutes and only 24.

Josh Murphy is very likely to see most of his minutes at lock next season, beefing up a bit and he provides that hard edge and is also more than able for 80 mins week on week. I expect to see this partnership a lot next year. 1200+ minutes and 23 appearances. Durable and teak tough.

David O Connor has had a very good season with us, while his original signing wasn't greeted too warmly he has quietly gone about his business and proven his value to the squad as a tight head side lock. Lots of power and grunt, not the most athletic but a solid option. Lots of away day camoes next season and injury cover for the two above. 600 minutes, expect to see this increase with Joyces departure.

Niall Murray is a super defensive lineout operator and highly athletic and gets around the pitch well. Has lacked a little bulk in the past but appears to be getting there. I personally think his very best days are ahead of him and that we will see him play much closer to 1000 minutes than this year's 500.

We need another body but I don't think the need for a big lump is as great as it was. We don't want anyone blocking Darragh Murray's development as he looks to have a very high ceiling. There is a super opportunity imo for a young lock to get first team action and pick up maybe 2-300 minutes.

How about an approach to Leinster for a loan move for Conor o Tierneighnighghghghgh

What's in that for Leinster, if the most he'll get is c. 300 mins?

He missed a chunk of this season through injury and got 161 mins for Leinster, and will be needed more next season in a RWC year.

Probably wouldn't be of interest to them but no harm in asking. The current situation where the other 3 provinces are shopping in the Leinster development pools must be really annoying for Leinster so might be worth trying something new.

I agree COT is not a good example.

Nah, look I completely get why you'd be casting around trying to find options to improve your squad, but feel we're very light at lock at the moment. RG is out till probably 2027 realistically, and he'll go into the mode of minding himself for the RWC then.

Ryan & McCarthy are both relatively injury prone. I really like Mangan, and he's done well since coming back from injury, but I'd rather see COT get minutes next year than Brian Deeny.

    Broken leg for Gavin :(

Pity for the lad as he came on and carried very hard. AI says 6-12 months recovery, hopefully less as he's so young

COT, Spicer, Corrigan, Mahon and guys like McNiece and Mcguire will all be attracting some attention from us I would say.

There are rumours going around that Leinster will be cutting Mahon and possibly Corrigan loose (along with a few other Academy players this summer), and I don't think they're going to offer a contract to Donncha McGuire from what I've heard.

Nobody knows what to expect with Spicer right now.

Dylan McNeice will be in the Leinster academy this intake for a virtual certainty.

COT would be a great move. Joe Joyce still has to be replaced. A good NIQ still looks the best option.

You know more than me on the depth of locks. I would say though JM is not good enough to play lock against the very best. Size, rucks, carrying, maul - he is a blindside playing lock and can cover admirably in a Lancaster style team. Until he comes up against the 'big boys'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

Doubt we are getting an NIQ

Ioane, Gilbert, SHL, Van Wyk is probably our lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,054 ✭✭✭Zeugnis

Cathal Forde would like a word, he pipped him by eight minutes.

I find the grumbling about Gilbert ungenerous. We should celebrate our players more, they collectively gave us a magical season and he was a central part of it. Buy those men a pint!

Saw that. Any idea how big he is? He talks about liking to cook ;)

I am sad hear this for both Hugh and his family

    Awful news about Gavin.

I think our time shopping for the lower level players in other provinces is coming to an end soon. The academy has been great for a while now and it's going to get better with Lancaster giving loads of players opportunities. They'll be banging at the door to get into our academy.

Cian Prendergast and Darragh Murray made the URC dream team. Other Irish representation was from McCloskey and Clarkson

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Jansen looks a bit hard done by - 10 tries in the URC this season (though Evan Roos got the spot ahead of him, and he scored 12 tries in the URC I suppose).

Thank you giving many good information about possible new-coming players into the academy. And Congratulation Cian Prendergast and Darragh Murray who received the honor of URC elite XV. And I hope that these young players take care for advices by nutritionist more they do now ( maybe enough now). Do Irish athletes eat many kinds of sea weeds which can strengthen bones and joints. At least many athletes in my living country believe so (where is known as island country as same as Ireland and even sumo wrestlers eat many kinds of sea weeds every day,)

I heard about 10 years ago that kids in the big Leinster rugby schools were on nutrition plans from their early teens, I think it's definitely a big focus.

At senior level, I guess you'll always have some variance between players in terms of their diligence depending on personality, work rate etc. Cian Prendergast in particular strikes me as a consummate pro. Both of his parents were high ranking members of the military, you'd expect that he grew up with a big focus on discipline. On the other hand, there's someone like Mack Hansen, who I've seen in McDonalds at midnight during the 6 nations.

I used to always have a burger about three hours before a game. It just worked for me.

That's part of what makes Mack what he is, that kind of maverick freestyling you just can't coach. It probably doesn't bode well for his longevity in the game, but you can't deny that he's rarely if ever had a poor game for Ireland or Connacht so the Big Macs and the few pints in O'Connells are probably something you have to indulge if you want to get the best out of him.

Andy Friend tells a story about getting references for Mack ahead of signing hin and one said he was "a bit loose".

    "Good loose or bad loose?"

If ya can't even have a bit of Maccies and a few brewskis in peace would ya even want to be a rugby player.

The night we (Munster) beat Connacht 3 nil in the wind and rain in Athlone, I met John Hayes devouring a burger in McDonald's after the game, he wasn't playing that night but was probably playing thd following weekend

As this season draws to a close for once I have no worries about next season

The only bother is having to wait

I'm interested in the summer internationals to see how many if our players get a ln opportunity.

Outside of those who have already been involved I think Bolton, West, Jansen and Bohan should all get a chance.
