Looks like Rubio amd the State Dept may have thrown RFK under the bus where Ebola and vaccines may be concerned when he was interviewed by Ms Shaheen in congress.

Rubio tosses RFK Jr under the bus on vaccines: "The State Dept made the decision that we are going to reengage ... we have certainly allowed Sec. Kennedy to play a leading role, but right now we're at a stage where we are going to reengage."

Veteran “60 Minutes” correspondent Scott Pelley blasted CBS News leadership in a fiery meeting accusing editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of “murdering” the revered program, according to a source in the room and an audio recording obtained by NBC News. Tensions between journalists and leadership had already been high since David Ellison took over CBS News’ parent company Paramount in 2025.

Gold has overtaken US bonds to become central banks’ favourite investment (now 27% vs 22%), as Donald Trump rattles faith in America’s political stability and public finances

The California Jungle Primary (all party primary with the top two going through to Round 2 if noone gets to 50%) is tonight and the results could take a while before we will know.

Republicans are hoping not to get locked out of the runoff as has sometimes happened. It looked for a while that the Democrats could get locked out because they have so many candidates while there are only 2 Republican ones.

LA Mayoral race is more competitive this year. Spencer Pratt, a registered Republican and reality TV star, is running the Democrat supported mayor Karen Bass close.

LA hasnt had a Republican mayor since Richard Riordan left office in 2001.

Pratt is endorsed by  Richard Grenell, a Trump special envoy, right-wing influencer Benny Johnson and both leading Republican candidates for governor, Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco and Fox News contributor Steve Hilton.

    Yes I do know that.

Separately Aaron Parnas reports the Trump administration hired a convicted January 6 rioter for a sensitive counterterrorism job inside the Pentagon.

His name is Elias Irizarry, and according to a report, the appointment has alarmed some inside the Defense Department.

Former Vice President Mike Pence says he has "certainly seen evidence" that White House is whitewashing Jan. 6 attack.

Trump said he could shoot someone on 5th avenue and still get elected. He's a cult leader. His christian fundamentalist supporters knew he cheated on all of his wives, they knew he used to support abortion, they knew he bragged about grabbing women by the pussy, they knew he had been divorced multiple times, they knew he knew nothing about the bible…. But he knew, that those were easy marks, who would buy whatever he was selling them.

Trump's superpower is that he can sell anything, as long as he's allowed to lie and cheat and avoid any consequences under the law. His superpower is his wealth and narcissism.

The christian fundamentalists were the easiest marks going. They are so easy to manipulate if you have Trump's main superpower. The complete lack of shame or integrity required to promise them the world knowing that you're going to lie to them later about why you've betrayed them (claim you didn't betray them, that you're their only hope and everyone else would have made their lives worse)

Most people cannot do this. Most people cannot lie so brazenly. Not even convincingly, but backing those lies up with paid marketing and shameless self promotion.

Most people cannot grift as hard as Trump. His skill is in self promotion, grifting and callousness. In the ability to throw his former supporters to the dogs as an example to others. In his ability to boost people to the highest positions of 'power' and then **** them under a bus as soon as they are waver in their support for him.

There are clear echoes of Cult Like behaviour in how his followers defend him at every turn and believe in fringe theories to exculpate him.

In the 70s, American parents were worried about their children joining cults. Now the children are worried about their parents joining a cult.

Trump's superpower is that he can sell anything

He only has the ability to sell things to stupid people, hypocrites and wankers. That's not a superpower.

Fooling people who have a room temperature IQ or that are consumed with hate for people they don't even know is relatively easy. They let you know what they want and you just keep promising it to them while telling them that they're great.

Anyone with even a lick of sense will see through people like Trump in a heartbeat.

Most people cannot do this. Most people cannot lie so brazenly.

    Most people aren't sociopaths.

Those parents in the 70's were right to worry about their children joining cults though.
    Look at what happened.
    They grew up, and did.

Yes they are the generation their parents worried about in the 1970s.

I would add that the US has a history of religious "revivals" that are coopted by political conservatives for their own ends. The Ulster Revival in the 1850s was coopted by Ulster Unionism. The Temperance movement was coopted by the Republican Party.

Breaking news: SCOTUS rules Alabama can use gerrymandered maps. This is despite the state already being gerrymandered and Blacks being 36% of the population there. Its also despite the State's election officials saying there isnt enough time.

I grew up in a staunchly Protestant, Unionist household. My parents would lament my interest in computer games, saying it was rotting my brain. Thankfully, they never really "got" social media. My Mum scrolls on TikTok a bit but my Dad is thankfully hopeless. He started questioning Trump over the rise in the cost of fuel which just means he was fine with everything else up to that point.

Ultimately, some people take a cultish view of their religion and it's about making sure the one true faith is never challenged or exposed to any new ideas. The irony of course is that the Protestant group of religions appeared because of a monk questioning the Catholic Church.

Well we've missed Tuesday this week, so I suppose we'll have to wait 6 days for the next TACO.

He only has the ability to sell things to stupid people, hypocrites and ****.

That's a very high proportion of the population though, certainly in the US and UK, and I fear elsewhere.

In fairness, the Brits aren't nearly that bad. Farage's support has a ceiling of about 30%. It's just that corporate media, including the BBC, relentlessly promote him.

I'd add the Tories' 15% (or whatever it is) to that, frankly. Aside from Badenoch's belated criticism of Farage for whipping up racial hatred, her and Chris Philp's performance on the Novak case has been almost as bad, if not as directly incendiary. Plus their endless English nationalist shtick while in power during the Brexit years has led the UK directly into its current morass.

You're still well short of MAGA though. This country was one of the first to develop a covid vaccine which was subsequently widely adopted. It's also a leader on green energy. We'd have neither of these achievements if it was as bad as the US, a nation which has regular school shootings and child beauty pageants.

The difficulty is their voting system - 30% in the UK could mean an absolute landslide because 30% for Reform versus 29% Labour + 29% Green + 12% Lib Dem (as an example) in every constituency means Reform get every seat.

    Which is absolute rubbish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,182 ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

30% isn't quite enough for a landslide. The current government is a once-in-a-generation fluke/disaster depending on perspective.

Agreed though. FPTP is thoroughly unfit-for-purpose.

Trump always has to have an enemy or something to be angry about. Biden or Obama or Clinton. Immigrants, Iran, the EU, Canadians, Venezuelans, Cubans, Somalians, Mexicans. Gazans, Panamanians. Dems, Nato, RINO's, Ukraine, Greenland, Climate Change "Activists", "Fake News" Reporters, CNN, Late show hosts, Pope Leo, the UK, Tariff opponents, "activist judges", Africans, enviromentalists, Jan 6 opponents, Nobel prize jury, the "stolen election" deniers, captured soldiers, ICE protestors, gun control proponents, pro choice people. Mark Kelly, Schiff, Pelosi, Schumer, Mike Pence, Liz Cheney, Elizabeth Warren, Mitt Romney Gavin Newsom.

Trump's "genius" is to make his supporters angry about these so that they forget their own struggles

Trump claims another ceasefire to add to all the ceasefires and wars he has stopped ans an estimated figure of “millions of lives “ saved. Trump could have stopped the animation of Lebanon, Gaza andthe WestBank years ago and could have many, many ‘.more millions of lives but decided that the ‘TIMING ’ was not right. Was he waiting until he thought that Israel had carried out enough destruction/dearth/ genocide, etc, etc,etc before he would ‘move’

OpenAI's Sam Altman is at the WH today. Comes after Trump signed an EO requiring OpenAI to allow the government access to its model.
