    I like his swarthy complexion

That’s the problem, there are very few answers to it.

I like Iraola, and I obviously hope it works out. But I do think the historical odds are heavily stacked against him.

That doesn’t mean he can’t be the exception, but it’s probably why I can’t fully convince myself either way just yet.

Totally understand where u are coming from, whoever we appoint is going to be a risk. Hopefully he gets the squad fit again and working hard as a unit on the field. Get them two right and things should improve on the season gone

Really excited to see us going back towards the high intensity in your face pressing that was Klopp's Liverpool. I would much rather watch that style of football with us losing than the shite we seen this past season.

King Kenny announces he is going through cancer treatment.

    Get well soon.

Allison for half the season is still a better scenario than almost any of the likley alternatives. Mamar is going to to be even more under pressure also in the style of play likely if Iraola takes over - it's chalk and cheese when you see Allison vs him dealing with long balls over the top or dealing with 1v1s. In a high press style of play there will often be more space in behind the back 4 and a keeper with excellent anticipation, the ability so come out to sweep up and be on top of attackers for 1v1s is essential. Mamar has been highly frustrating in this department for me - so many times a ball has gone long and I am expecting the keeper to appear to clear it/smoother the attacker and he is back in his box.

Hence I'm on the fence. Would Mamar not benefit too from being the clear #1. Last year, he had 2 longish stints in goal (the first during our worst period of the season). Does the club want him to step up a level? Are they confident in keeping him happy to play 2nd fiddle to Allison another year? I've no answers… best of luck to Iraola in handling that situation.

We can't be sure that any manager will work out, especially in this market. There is very little proven choice available. In addition there will inevitably be some national team manager roles opening up after the World Cup.

Sure it's taking a bit of a risk, but it's a good decision imo. We'll have to wait and see if he truly is the right man for the job, it's never a guarantee but acting now to bring in Iraola is one of the better decisions the club can make in the current moment, and I'm happy enough with it.

Id also say Kelleher spent a number of years gradually showing he could do it.

First with periodic League Cup appearances and then more and more through sustained runs of games as Ali's injuries got worse.

Hell I was sceptical about him a few seasons ago.

The assumption Mamar is ready was always a bold one imo

It was always going to come to this. Alisson is a legend but he has been consistently breaking down - that is why Kelliher had such lengthy runs in the team. But Kelliher was incredible in those stretches, to the point we didn't miss Alisson. He is also great with his feet.

Controversial, but I would have promised Kelliher the no.1 spot rather than risk him leave.

Mamardashvili looks alright so far overall, I actually think he rushes out well, but he is far from convincing with the ball at his feet. Could be that will be alright however, as I read somewhere the last few days that Iraola almost always wants his players to pass forward, and that back passes to the keeper should rarely be used other than where there's a clear need.

Konate to Real Madrid no surprise there really.

Wouldn’t be surprised if that was Madrids plan since they were free to speak with him since January. Follow Trent’s footsteps but don’t be stupid enough to tell everyone before the season is over.

I wasn't totally against selling Quansah at the time but I thought we had a better plan than only signing even younger CBs than him and having Konate leave for free a year later.

If Enrique was available, he is my dream choice but he isn't so I have previously said Iraola is the right choice. I have my concerns on how he will handle the huge jump up and distinct lack of European experience but I have a feeling he is worth the gamble. Bournemouth play that front foot aggressive football that is synonymous with LFC and I'm looking forward to seeing it again after the past seasons tripe.

I hope to see more of our young players get an opportunity and that pathway to the first team to open up again. Before a single player is signed, I am excited to see what Iraola can get out of the current squad, which Slot obviously underutilised and misused.

Presumably using any negotiations with Liverpool as a means to drive up his wages over there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,055 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Doesn't feel like a fantastic reward for our faith in him this season but whatever.

At least he's leaving us when there is a greater and more obvious reason more obvious reason to do so (unlike Trent last year).

I hope this is the last time we could stung like this though.

If Konate goes to Madrid, I wonder if there's any chance of a sneaky move for Dean Huijsen in return? Had a rough first season over there, and he's very much not a Mourinho style centre back (hence the move for Konate I'd say), and of course Huijsen has already played brilliantly for Iraola at Bournemouth so there isn't much risk.

Otherwise wouldn't mind a move for Éder Militão, good quick aggressive defender. If Konate joins, and Rudiger's supposed new deal, they're gonna be a bit overstaffed with CBs who are all good enough to play every week, so one way or another someone surely has to leave.

Cool, so in reality the thing of "He doesn't want a new deal with Liverpool" is not actually grounded in anything. If he was actually linked with SC Internacional now, that might have had a bearing, but he's looking for a 3 year deal with Juventus, with comments that he wants that longer term security, so it seems he has no intention of going back to Brazil in the medium term yet anyway (a lot more money to be made in Europe yet I'd say!).

We've no indication from anywhere that he wouldn't take that same 3 year deal he wants if it was offered by Liverpool (which is actually where it seems the issue is, as they're not offering one). One would assume he'll take his 3 or 4 year deal wherever he can get it, and then perhaps he'll go back to SC Internacional around 37 or 38.

Don’t be surprised if it happens again with Szoboszlai who has two years left on his contract.

Ok you need to learn the difference between "3 games a week" and "3 games in a week"

We can play 3 games within a week's period every now and again but we do not "play 3 games a week". I made no false assertions.

Yeah, he's one we need to make sure to sign up again soon. He's the heartbeat of that team in the middle — and I know some have issues with how much he was taking out of the ball this season, but it appears that's what he was being told to do. He didn't do that under Klopp, he didn't really do it in 24/25, and he doesn't do it for Hungary, so I'm not that worried about him slowing things down under Iraola. He's a natural leader on the field who makes things happen through sheer force of will sometimes, and we need that.

Being widely reported now Iraola has been agreed.

Honestly it blows my mind a bit that someone like Konate would end up at Madrid. I wouldn't have him as that sort of standard at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,637 ✭✭✭SuperTortoise

Aside from the first 6 months of this season he has been massive for us for 5 years.

    He's a big loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,995 ✭✭✭mormank

Agreed. I think Konate was under rated by alot of our fans simply because he happened to be playing next to, and by extension comapred to, our best ever centre back. Konate was mostly excellent for us during his time with us. Remember when he played next to Trent and would basically be covering 2 positions on his own?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,340 ✭✭✭✭8-10

We literally beat Real Madrid last 2 seasons in a row with Konaté starting

They're hardly streets ahead of us

For Iraola — I think we'll need to be a bit patient with him. We're unlikely to get immediate results. That kind of cohesive risky press is gonna take time to instil, and there will be gaps in those first few months that teams will play through. Honestly, I kind of expect it to look a bit like the start of last season… attacking, but brittle, for a while. And hopefully by around Christmas we'll see things tighten up.

3 matches a week is ok if the squad is used; early rounds in the domestic cups can have weakened teams.

The new format of the CL means you can play really poorly and qualify; those 8 league games can have squad rotation.

Slot did not use all the options available, Iraola might approach it differently.

I am thrilled he will be the new manager, not many elite managers available and he will definitely get the Anfield roar back with the several bookings and possible sideline sending offs he will get:)
