Fiona Mangan 3rd in a 1.pro race in Spain. Her 140 UCI points from this race is more than Ireland was winning collectively about 5/6 years ago!

Meehan in the break in the final stage in Hungary.

Hilly stage, but will probably end in a reduced sprint.

Liam O'Brien 2nd in the queen stage at Ronde de l'Isard, up to 3rd on GC. Seems to be a full Irish u23 team there as well

Lara Gillespie will be riding the women's Giro d'Italia starting next Saturday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,288 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

    Unfortunately, so is Lorena Wiebes

Sam started gp criquielon tiday, Merlier probably the biggest name there

Is Sam still suffering from the blood flow issue? As he can't make it through a race lately.

News on Archie Ryan. He had “double knee surgery” in February. No date for his return but he’s hopeful this has sorted his issues

Lara Gillespie finishes third to Lorena Wiebes on Stage 1 of the Giro d'Italia Women

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,472 ✭✭✭Mefistofelino

Wiebes chucked off Giro for underweight bike. Seems a bit extreme.

Surely you just take her with away and give her equal to the worst time of the day.

Its a old UCI rule and there is precedent going back to 2013 when Luperini was also expelled.

The rules are the rules Hans/Luigi.

Chances are mechanic omitted to add weight following a bike change or the like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,857 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I was in no way questioning the application of the current rules. More musing that they are wrong and there is a better way to go about things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,796 ✭✭✭at1withmyself

I would normally be on the side of the rules but in this instance it was 20 grams or less then 0.3% deviation so I think removing her from the race was a ridiculous decision.

Another second place for Lara today, she has the form so hopefully she can convert that into a win soon

Maybe there is someone in some other minority sport that I haven't heard of but Lara Gillespie is probably the most underrated person in Irish sport.

Today seems like the type of stage that might suit Lara. The unstructured look to it seems right up her street. Some vicious, but very short, climbs shouldn't affect her.

Fiona Murtagh is a current world champion rower who has an Olympic medal and I doubt 99% of the country have heard of her

We, as a nation, don’t really care about most sports

Anyway, fingers crossed for Lara. Felt she had it yesterday. Reports after the race say she struggled in the heat so wouldn’t be too confident about today

I'm assuming Lara will be able to get over the Cat. 3 2.5 km at 7% without too much difficulty?

Ben Healy on the start list for next weekend's Tour Auvergne Rhone Alpes

New name for the Criterium I see.

Jamie Mehan in still invoved at the Mercan Tour approaching the final climb.

9th in the end for Jamie. Looks like Decathlon have another decent young climber in Biseaux (usually a wonderkid in PCS) and Pozzovivo in 4th at 43 years young. Good finish. A one two for Equipo Kern Pharma with Ruiz winning but Sosa was the rider of the day. Monster final climb from him to set up his teammate.

Archie Ryan is back cycling on strava, his first activities since New Years Day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭Paddigol

Good to hear. He's been very unlucky with injuries since he's come on the scene. Hopefully he gets a clear run now to build fitness and try to ride into form.

For the first time in over a year I am no longer the only Irishman in the village. Both Rory Townsend and Sam take to the start line in the 'prestigious' Heitse Pijl in Belgium today. While not advising anyone to run down to Paddy Power when I spoke to Sam he was confident of form coming back.

Just knew that team would do a good job of the Irish kit and bike.

Queen stage in the womens giro shortened due to a potential ice avalanche. Utter woke nonsense!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭Paddigol

Were you talking to him for long? In good form?? Hope he gets some results this season, such a decent fella.

Not a race against other competitors but against time and exhaustion:

Joe Barr, Ireland's foremost ultra cyclist having won the Race Around Ireland twice, RAAM >60 category and the likes of the Florida 500 in Feb this year (534 miles into grueling head winds in 32hrs 47mins, he holds the record when in 2023 he did it in 27hrs 4 mins, avg 31.5km/h) is now at the age of 66 attempting to cycle Route 66 in 9 days.

It’s 2,448 miles across very varied terrain from Santa Monica to Chicago but he’s not even 4 days in and has covered 1,423 miles. That's a staggering 24.1km/h average, what an absolute machine and legend, mind blowing.

I need a sanity check. Was browsing Pog's info. on PCS to see what he was doing next (Tour de Suisse) and I see no mention of MSR in his top results but maybe I'm having a turn. Tell me I'm not losing it. Maybe an issue with their algorithm to pick out the top 12 results.
