Surely sub 50 is coming for Mawdsley this year

Ciara Mageean on RTE program last night

Some fairly sobering detail on the situation she finds herself in

Its so typical of life throwing you lemons just when you're in the form of your life and enjoying the success you deserve.

I don't think I ever saw someone so delighted to win the Europeans, you could see her progressing through the year leading up to it, getting her 1.58 in the 800m in Manchester and you just knew something special was brewing.

Then just when you were feeling disappointed for her getting that Achilles injury that put her out of the Olympics she announces her engagement and at least shes getting to enjoy her downtime.

And then this, such a beautiful soul she is.

It didn’t sound good for her in the long term. Fair play to her for carrying on. Its very easy to just give up.

It’s crazy how some people can abuse their bodies and live extremely long life while others who don’t only have a short time here

50.17 for Mawdsley in Belgium. Really kicking on this season.

Was just coming to post that. We won't be long waiting for sub 50.

50.08 won bronze at the last outdoor Europeans, so it could be an interesting summer ahead for Sharlene. Can she get herself into some Diamond League races with those times? Would be great to see some signs of a return to form for Rhasidat too.

Fair play to her - she can definitely go faster this summer.

Do we have a women's 4x400 team qualified for the Euros in August?

Currently sitting 9th in the qualification standings with 16 places available, according to the excellent TrackAthletes website. So more or less guaranteed to qualify. In fact, all five relay teams (M 4x1, W 4x1, M 4x4, W 4x4 and Mx 4x4)are currently in qualification positions.

    https://www.trackathletes.ie/roadto/Birmingham/2026/

Potentially a really big team set to qualify actually. Sad to see Mageean in there as pre-qualified but won't be competing.

Great to see Sharlene starting to shine sub 50 coming. Things have gone really quiet with Rhasidat can only think she not in any way behind her injuries… not raced much this season at all so doesn’t look good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,502 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Yeah, she's potentially not planning any major races until July. Which could be a case of trying to time her form, but probably more likely that she's still having issues. McPhillips is another one keeping a very low profile for now. They're probably two of our three best medal prospects for the Europeans but we'll have to wait a while to see if either is in any kind of form this year.

Here's the startlists for Rabat tonight

    https://share.google/9VYdlP1nhefgAtX17

Lots to look forward to. I'm very much looking forward to the women's 800m, intrigued to see how Lilian Odira gets on. We'll also have Beamish vs El Bakkali in the men's steeplechase, and both Andrew Coscoran and Mark English in the men's 1500/800 respectively.

Laura Muir will also race in the women's 1500, I'm wondering if she has anything left at elite level, or if she's in decline for sure.

Does anyone know where Cian McPhilips is? He literally super quiet and no indication of when he will open his outdoor season and whilst I know we are a fair bit away from Europeans but be nice to see him line up in a Diamond League race

Good run by Coscoran last night, finishing strongly for 3:31.65. Rabat DL was a very good standard meet.

Onwards to Stockholm, I believe, on Thursday.

    Rome, not Stockholm. Doh!

Anyone know why there was no 100m mens, or 400m women's races at the Rabat Diamond league meeting?

They just can’t fit all the distances in. Every meet chooses some to miss out. Morocco obviously prefers middle distances races so added a non-diamond league women’s 1,500 to the 2 hour window too

Stockholm has a similar line up. No mens 100, no women’s 1500, no women’s 400.

    Whereas Rome has those 3.

Both meets have a men’s 800 but the Rome one isn’t a diamond league event that night

Super European Record from Ruppert last night, if only he had ran like that in Tokyo. I had hoped that now Beamish is a world champion he might try go with the leaders and challenge himself, but not to be.

Great win for Audrey Werro last night too, I think she's got a 1:54 in her legs this year.

A great week of athletics coming up with three Diamond Leagues in seven days. First up is Rome, startlists below

    https://share.google/cyNqfDaSbDqHlg98V

A lot of eyes will be on Keely Hodgkinson in the women's 400m, I'm really looking forward to seeing what she can do at the distance.

Mark English running the 800m, whilst Sarah Healy is moving up to the 5000m. I'll be keeping a close eye on the Batocletti-Hailu battle at the front though, I hope it'll be a fast race.

Will be broadcast on Virgin Media 4 and BBC Three from the later time of 8pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,287 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

5,000m was very fast but Batocletti not involved. She may have been one of only 2/3 that didn’t run PBs including Sarah Healy who ran 14:48 and is now 2nd all time behind only Sonia on the Irish list. She was 30s behind the leading trio though in a great race

Good 2nd for Mark English too

Fun Diamond League last night. Second win and PB this week for Emma Zapletalova. With McLaughlin and Bol focusing on other events this is now an open field, maybe she'll become the one to beat.

51.14 PB for Keely Hodgkinson. I think she was definitely hoping for more, but a PB is a PB.

I think 14.48 is a pretty solid result for Sarah Healy, definitely something to build on. I read that Batocletti has been sick recently, so maybe that explains her below par result. 14:18 for the winner Amebaw though, she's a name I'm not familiar with at all.

Nice to see Trey Cunningham go sub 13 for the first time.

Laura Muir last in the 1500. She lost her balance when the pack were making their move with 500 to go, but don't think that can be blamed for such a disappointing result.

from the excellent track athletes twitter account

”For those eager to know: it appears Cian McPhillips will open his season over 800m at the FBK Games, Hengelo on 21 Jun. Sharlene Mawdsley (400m), Cathal Doyle (1500m), Darragh McElhinney (5000m) & Benjamin Richardson (100m) also on the initial startlist.”

I have been keeping an eye on the rivals of our medal contenders for the Europeans, primarily heptathlon and womens 400m.

At Gotzis Heptathlon Annik Kalin just set a PB which is ahead of Kate O'Connor, Emma Oosterwagel and Sofie Dokter also set new PBs in the range of Kate. I know it is almost expected for Kate to win medals now, but it's important to remember that last year, Thiam was completely out of sorts, KJT was miles from her best, Noor Vidts and Kalin who were 3rd/4th at the Olympics were not competing. That is not a knock on Kate, I believe she will continue to improve and always be a medal contender. It just might be a bit more competitive if all are in form this year.

It's hard to believe that in 2018, the European 400 title was won by Swiety-Ersetic in 50.41. She has never gone sub-50. Now we have Bukowiecka, Bol, Adeleke, Anning, Jager, Manuel, Klaver, Mary-John, Nielsen all with sub-50 PBs. Mawdesley is just outside with her recent PB. Jager and Manuel went 1/2 in Rome last night. This is an event that has improved significantly over the last few seasons in terms of level, on the global and European level. Rhasidat may need to be close to her best to be a contender this year.

Keely still needs to get to grips with the blocks, unless she puts signifocent training into proper 400m racing, I wonder if getting these types of results will hinder her confidence. I suppose shes still getting the speed training she needs in her quest for the world record.
