Sure they got 40 years out of the A3s. They might get 30 out of the 139s.

So what went wrong did they push to far asking for the NH90?

I imagine the price tag for anything actually misspec has given them enough to hide behind long enough to get to 2027 and then bury it.

Ah, the figleaf of pretending to be doing something, while kicking everything of real value into the never never land:

Yep, that's my take too…we're paying 120+ million for 4 H145M's, the price tag for 8(+) of any militarised medium helo now is going to be north of half a billion all in. North Macedonia paid 360 million dollars for 8 AW149's in a mixed civvy and M spec back in 2024…not happening in the budget they've allocated and with other stuff to be (supposedly) bought in the same timeframe.

Yep, same as anything that's actually a combat capable ship is going to come in north of half a billion as well when everything is added in, hence why I think the tarting up of the 60's is the upper limit of what the various "powers that be" will ever go for.

In Fairness the dept are still probably confused what the Difference between A Super Medium and Medium is.

Airbus have recently changed the name of the H175M Medium that they offered to the UK to the H175M Super Medium probably to help people of similar mindsets in the DOD around the world.

So if all is True about the 139 replacement we might see some extra H145s bought and painted grey and some extra sticky tape in the 139 fleet telling aircrew not to push buttons.

Heres a good conspiracy theory. Its the early 2000s again and we have an all green uniform comand. They tell DOD what do we need big helicopters for we need more APCs for overseas missions

The CoDF has had little to no effect thus far.

Plenty of low hanging fruit in so far as new offices with fancy titles labelled as "joint" which resulted in another 200+ appointments, many of which were aimed at senior officer and NCO ranks which while great for promotion and progression left holes elsewhere that remain unfilled.

I Would still wager (albeit limited) that joining as enlisted/cadet out of school offers a reasonably good experience but for 5/6 years. However, I would heavily caveat that given that most joiners would tend to have an opportunity to complete an overseas mission within that time.

Given that UNIFIL will be effectively over from 31Dec26. How do you incetivise someone to join the army long term, given the reduction in overseas (and associated allowances) and the drawdown of domestic taskings also.

Doing barrack guards isn't going to motivate people to stay.

Procurement of military equipment has changed - it is not Nissan Patrols or Scania lorries etc of before we are looking at, which themselves were 'militarised' civilian platforms. Even the aircraft, ships to a significant extent were relatively straightforward with little embedded military tech. And that was probably alright for then.

Now however, we are now getting into the deeper end of the the pool where the spec, complexity and cost are way beyond our experience, expertise and we are clearly struggling. Throw in a wider rearmament across Europe, shift to buy European, thin domestic knowledge base and this is what we get … I think our 'system' is struggling to manage one equipment procurement at a time, we can see the new armoured fleet purchase was effectively handed to the French to manage. If we are going for NH 90s they are serious pieces of kit and given their operational history you want to know what your are at. We need to realise the metaphorical 'green spraypainted Ford Transits' is not where we are at any longer and resource accordingly.

Insert rambling screech from the Opposition about “EU militarism” while the Government politely nods and laughs.

Nope. Not with Mark Carney here for a few days, Helen will be too busy.

Who knows, maybe the Canucks will sell us 18 of their older CF-188s as part of a new transatlantic G2G

Nah, they are running with the "Triple Lock" reform so don't expect anything defence related outside of that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,361 ✭✭✭sparky42

I mean how flightworthy are their oldest ones at this stage, didn't they have to buy the spares from the old RAAF ones just to keep the fleet going? Sooner they decide whether they are going split buy or not the better for them.

No, I'm quite certain they are complete junk, it was just a joke, in the absence of JonnyB

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,361 ✭✭✭sparky42

Oh I got that, just wondering out loud how long can they continue to hold up the replacement.

They are down to the how much is that going to cost phase with the French Armour deal.

Officials from my Department have now commenced detailed negotiations with France on a potential agreement for the delivery of capability requirements under the French SCORPION Programme of vehicles. A whole-of-capability approach will be be adopted, to ensure that vehicle procurement is fully integrated with doctrine, training, infrastructure, personnel, and interoperability requirements. The programme is in the initial assessment phase. As such, the fleet size, role, timelines and costs are to be determined and are dependent on the ongoing negotiations and the completion of the necessary approval and sanction steps.

I'd read that we are still looking at the no of vehicles, package composition, when we get them and what we pay stage … i.e. nothing is decided … am I missing something ?

That was PQ responce from the Minster the other day on the status of the New Armour

Pretty much, as I've said, still thinking the French aren't going to get anything like the orders they thought from us. I'd imagine sticker price shock has broken out in the Departments at the cost of anything actually current military spec.

I was at an event in France over the weekend and got a tour of the Griffon from the Troupes de marine (the French Marine Corps) and some representatives of KNDS.

Very impressive machine and as an APC it stands far more bulky and imposing than the Mowag.

The KNDS lads are very aware of Irish interest and fully expect to be supplying export vehicles in large numbers to the DF

    The French are coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Peader Tobin from todays PQs

It has been reported that Ireland has signed a memorandum of understanding, MOU, with the French Government around the purchase of military hardware and the training of Irish soldiers by the French army. I understand this may include the location of French soldiers and military hardware in Ireland.

I understand it is to aid interoperability between the two armies. There are major concerns the MOU will limit future procurement competition and therefore push up prices, and there are also concerns as to whether this MOU seeks to provide French military cover to Ireland.

We have already tied ourselves into British military cover in our skies and seas. Many in Europe see the west coast of Ireland as a weakness in military defence-----

You left out the fact that it "will reduce the French mobilisation time"… As ever I'd say Tobin doesn't have a fecking clue, about much at all. But Christ the opposition must be some of the worst in living history with some of the shite they go on with.

I think we have seen great progress here as there is no mention about Neutrality or no issue with French Troops.

But thats probably because of there support in 1798 in killala.
