Someone has made a mistake there. Assuming it's come down to money, which is what it sounds like, I think Ibou and/or his agent have overplayed their hand. That doesn't seem like someone who wants to leave or has a better offer waiting (of course, if he announces for PSG tomorrow I'll take that back!)

I think we won't really find out for awhile yet, he has inherited an even bigger mess at Chelsea, so even if it doesn't work out there I really wouldn't judge him on it, but, I would question his judgement in going to Chelsea in the first place. A strange move unless he has gotten the terms and conditions he wants at Chelsea. A very risky move for him.

Liverpool is not the right club for him.

Iraola is basically done, I get that everyone wants to jump in their with their own suggestions but Xabi wasn't considered either.

    Iraola, Hoeneß, Sage.

That's the shortlist. The club don't want anyone else and the fans do not want Ange

I’m not sure it actually is a mess, if he has the oversight that we hear he does… it’s an almost excellent squad, with just a few weak points. But a couple of older heads in key positions and they’ve huge potential.

    Ah there's no way.

One of the biggies will never turn down a free transfer like his, can always sell next year if needed.

It's a squad that can down tools pretty quickly, but if he were to get top 4 for them, that would be an excellent first season and something he could then build on. We could very well be competing with them for CL places, so can only imagine the media building up the hype between Alonso and Iraola. I wouldn't be of the view that whoever finishes above the other is better ( unless there is a substanial points difference of say more than 10-15 points) a lot will depend on the circumstances each encounter; signings, injuries etc.

i was relieved to hear the news yesterday to be honest but I’d be a liar to say I’m massively convinced that Iraola is the answer either.

Results generally get managers sacked but I genuinely don’t believe it’s that simple with us. Its been a long hard road watching us play and all the enjoyment vanished a long while ago.

Slot’s defenders would point out rightly that winning the league should yield huge credit in the bank and a league title has to be worth more than a year’s grace, especially when mitigating circumstances like Jota’s tragic passing and losing a legendary manager etc are factored in. Hard to argue with such logic tbf. It genuinely is. Especially when you consider it was a league title won against all the odds and it’s never been the Liverpool way to lightly sack managers.

But it’s just been so bloody soul destroying watching us turn into such a boring team. I honestly hand on heart cannot name another top flight team who are worse to watch than us. And yeah Arsenal rightly get criticised as awful to watch but i think we’re worse. And they’re winning games and trophies. We are not.

I think Arne massively overachieved in his first season and I don’t know how he did it but winning the league last year probably doesn’t happen with anyone else in charge.

But equally it’s been a horrible experience watching us implode and at the same time bore the living arse off everyone in sight this season with a team who pass the ball sideways and backwards at a snails pace, no coherent plan evident, something which i think cost him his job more than results.

I think when Klopp was appointed years ago we all felt genuinely excited, it wasn’t hard to see we’d struck gold. I dont think many got that feeling with Arne and i dont get that feeing with Iraola (if it ends up being him).

But whatever happens just go play some attacking football and give us something to enjoy watching again, win or lose.

Yeah, that’s all very well when you are the underdog:

i”d say most of us saw most of the following games this season:

    LIV 4-2 BOU

    MU 4-4 BOU

    BOU 2-3 ARS

    BOU 3-2 TOT

    BOU 3-2 LIV

    BOU 2-2 MU

    ARS 1-2 BOU

Games where (even though they didnt always get the result) they were excellent, exciting, but played on the break. With pace, passion, excitement, etc. Against teams who came to win

But the next list is games in the latter half of the season, when they were pushing for Europe, but suddenly were favourites. How did Iraola cope with setting up a team expecting to play exciting front foot football, when by this stage they were rated better than the opposition?:

    WHU 0-0 BOU

    BOU 1-1 SUN

    BOU 0-0 BRE

    BUR 0-0 BOU

    Not great by any means.

That’s not nitpicking random games throughout a season. they were consecutve games at a crucial part of the season, that cost them CL football. I could nitpick more like them at other times. I’m not having a go at Iraola, I’m just not seeing the attraction. It’s a complete myth that his teams play open attacking football all the time. And defending set pieces was a big weakness, worse than even Liverpool!

They also lost first round in both league cup and FA Cup so zero squad management / rotation required

I don't think anyone is suggesting that appointing Iraola comes without risk. It's a massive gamble.

I think the club decided that the risk of continuing with Slot, with the level of fan and possibly player discontent in the background, was a bigger gamble.

So once you decide to make the change you appoint the best manager you can. Obviously Klopp, Guardiola and Enrique are not available so that leaves you with a relatively small selection of managers to choose from.

Iraola is the best of those available in my opinion. His football has a very high ceiling but there are massive question marks about his ability to play 3 games in a week, to manage the expectation and scrutiny at a big club. To break down low blocks as you have alluded to.

But you hire the best guy available and go from there.

I might counter that by saying the players he had were not capable of playing front foot football? so he had no choice but to play counter attacking football.

If it is to be him, he'll get my full support, Klopp, Pep, Enrique started somewhere much lower that the teams they guided to dominance.

There's no sure thing, especially this summer where there is no outstanding manager available.

Florian scored for Germany this evening. Easy finish, but whacked it home.

I wouldn’t put postecoglou in charge of an u10 B team. He is unable to manage a team - all his wants is to play the way he wants, totally unwilling to adapt to the opposition to the detriment of his teams.

ah yeah, he’d be a disaster. He had 10 great weeks at the start of his first year at Spurs, after which his one plan began to be figured out, and things dipped sharply. He couldn’t adapt to that, and each half-season was worse than the one before.

I like him very much actually… when he is managing a team we are playing as it’s pretty much a guaranteed 3 points.

Very hands on, a high degree of involvement and focus between manager and players, very harmonious

I miss what Klopp used to get from the poor guy.

Whoever we get will be a risk, there is no guaranteed success with any manager even Pep. But I see lots of people want Enrique and I am wondering why they think he would be a good appointment? He has not shown he can work with a team of inferior players and win. His success so far has been with Barcelona with Messi, Suarez and Neymar and then PSG who have unlimited funds and they have spent 820m euro in his time there and they have a huge catchment areas for young talent.

Those are the 2 teams he has been successful with so far. Why do some wants us to move the earth for him?

You walk out under that famous sign in the Anfield tunnel, and you feel a mix of emotions.

Responsibility, of course. To this club’s great history.

Expectation, naturally. To honour the legacy that, for 134 years, has made Liverpool FC one of the biggest clubs in world football.

And determination. To compete. To win. To bring success to an Anfield crowd so renowned across the globe.

That all of those emotions would culminate in a Premier League title after just 12 months was beyond special. It was not only a trophy, but a reward for the hard work, sacrifice and commitment shown by so many people throughout the club.

It was made even more meaningful because you got to enjoy it with us. Singing our songs, cheering the goals. And on the day we lifted the trophy, you were there. Lining the streets outside the stadium, filling Anfield in anticipation.

Having had much of that taken from you in 2020, it was never lost on me how much it mattered that you were part of it all. Seeing you come together in your hundreds of thousands on the streets of Liverpool for the title celebrations only reinforced that idea.

What followed on Water Street later that day was shocking and my thoughts remain with all of those affected. I was privileged to witness first-hand your spirit of compassion and unity. It is a spirit that has carried this city through difficult moments before, and one that I hope will help bring the justice and accountability so many have campaigned for over many years.

That only weeks after celebrating together we would lose Diogo is indescribable. More than anything, I want to remember a team-mate, a friend and an incredible human being who touched the lives of thousands of you every time he wore this club’s famous crest.

In one of the most difficult moments this club has faced, the love, compassion and support shown by the Liverpool family was extraordinary. As I leave this club, it would be remiss of me not to say that the way you honoured Diogo and stood together in his memory will stay with me forever.

The connection we share goes beyond football, beyond European nights under the Anfield lights or the sound of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ being sung from The Kop.

You made me feel welcome from the start and helped me on the path. That is something I cherish.

Of course, it is important to say thank you.

To the players who wore the badge with pride while representing this club across the world. To the staff - not only those on the training ground - but those behind the scenes, whether maintaining the pitches at Anfield or working in the canteen at the training ground.

To the club hierarchy and ownership for your trust and direction. To the legends who supported me and impressed upon me the importance of The Liverpool Way.

It has been a pleasure working with you all.

Liverpool’s 20th league title belongs to all of us and it will remain an important chapter in its history. For that we should all be proud.

This club will always judge itself by the biggest honours. That is how it should be.

But I also leave knowing the club is exactly where it belongs: amongst Europe’s elite. Securing Champions League football was an important responsibility and one that ensures Liverpool can continue competing at the highest level next season and beyond.

I leave with complete confidence in what lies ahead. The players who have given so much to this club, who have upheld its values and helped create so many unforgettable moments, have built foundations that will endure.

At the same time, a new generation is emerging, ready to write its own story and embrace the responsibility that comes with wearing this shirt.

Change is part of football, but I know that this club will continue to make its people proud.

When I first stood beneath that sign in the Anfield tunnel, I knew what this club demanded. I leave knowing we never stopped striving for it.

    Arne.

Surprised Klopp's name isn't coming up, there have been stories of he coming back to management recently (UAE, Madrid) and he didn't rule out coming back at some point....

Are Mo and Ròbbo still leaving ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,054 ✭✭✭✭noodler

    Mo simply has to.

We can't have 400k pw tied up in his current state

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,758 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

He actually did rule out going to Madrid.

The reason his name isn't coming up is because he has said multiple times that he's not going back into daily management.

Those stories, to just Klopp's own words, are "nonsense".

Seems a bit harsh on Reijnen, getting caught in the fallout...
