I thought if they were to sack Slot, it would be for Alonso.

He’s definitely a better manager now after his Madrid spell. Even though that didnt go well, he would have learnt loads. Some say his style of football wouldnt suit, but i think he could adapt. Plus the big thing is we (i’d love to know who exactly) decided to spend massively on Wirtz last summer. He is undoubtedly a top quality player, and no surprise whatsoever that it would take him a full season to adapt to the PL (as so many before him needed), but Alonso has proven he can get the best out of him.

But with that option gone, im stumped. Luis Enrique would be awesome but presumably very unlikely.

Some rumours that Bradley's injury is a lot worse than expected.

100% agree. Same as Slot this season. Would be nice to have peak Salah, Mane, Trent, Robbo to break down defensive teams, but not a reality. Takes time to bed in new players. And we can only challenge for the league if we are relatively lucky with injuries, which we weren’t this season.

I don't believe we missed out on Alonso I don't think he was on our list. If I'm wrong and we did miss out on him it took serious incompetence.

I thought initially Alonso as well ,his win record at Madrid was over 70% and then his connection with Wirtz but apparently he wasn't in consideration.Strange?

I agree, I think the events of that weekend (the atrocious Villa performance followed by the Salah post) were likely the final straw.

Even the tone of the press release today suggests they really didn't want to pull the plug, but it needed to be done.

I also don't think they've had Iraola lined up for any great length of time, otherwise he wouldn't have already had talks with several other clubs. The comments from his agent yesterday sounded like a "come and get me" plea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭riddles

We wont know what happened with Enrique and Alonso. Some from the emerging groups have to join the ranks of the new elite level managers and Iraola has potential. Worst outcome is an engaged team playing with energy, something needed to develop a new squad. Arne no chance.

Alonso wants to be manager and Liverpool seem to be going with the Head Coach/DoF approach.

I don't think he has anything signed with Liverpool. But I wouldn't be surprised if Hughes told him to not do anything until Liverpool complete their review at the end of the season.

that doesn’t make him a fraud. A fraud is someone being deceitful, tricking people and pretending to be something they’re not. It’s steeped in poor moral character.

Slot’s a decent football coach who demonstrably did his best, with a skill set that was suited to 24/25s context, and has proven unsuited to 25/26s context. He can have failed without being labeled with this sort of personal insult to his character.

<edit> already dealt with I see - I just hate that word, it’s one of the dumbest commonly used ‘football bantz’ terms, along with the likes of ‘bottler’, and ‘stealing a living’

It’s pretty clear Alonso had turned us down in favour of holding out for the Madrid job. FSG probably saw that as an immaturity, and were probably not surprised how it turned out. Likely they said now or never to him at that point, and since he didn’t bite they ruled him out for the future, which is fair enough really.

It takes a very strong personality to win the PL . The manager literally needs to be the biggest ego at the club, supreme confidence, the king of the jungle, that no one would dare challenge. Simeone would win it, 100% confident in that.

Going against the general consensus to say I am pretty disappointed by this. I think given the way things went this season and especially the Jota situation the season should have been written off and a clean start given to him for next season. The more we hear from players the more I feel they simply were unable to perform this season and regardless who was manager it would have been a bad year.

It’s pretty disgusting to read/hear some of the comments also (not necessarily here as most are measured though there is one or or two….). Won us only our second league in over 30 years and you would swear he came in to sink the club on purpose.

I also don’t think there is anyone exciting out there being linked or who are not equally as risky or even more risky than trusting slot to turn things around next season. Hopefully I’m wrong but this has the potential to turn into a United esque jumping from manager to manager disaster.

Slot literally managed us to a Premier League title and you done nothing but cut the back off him for it. Simeone is the highest paid manager is world football, and has won sweet FA in the last few years, also plays absolutely horrendous football to go with it...but now he's 100% the answer to our problems.

Even going by your standards this is mental and I can't believe I've had a bite. Slot must be a big personality.

Regarding Simeone , I did mean to add, he'd win it, if you're into that type of winning.

I don't think I said anything personal about Slot, it was always about the football

    Please not Tuchel or Glasner

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,553 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Come on, we all know not a single thing was touched when he arrived, it was Klopps team, a team that Klopp got 82 pts with before he left, a total that was enough to win it in Slots first season. Klopps team literally just produced another 82pt season, again, with Slot on the sideline. It all fell apart when the tinkering started this season. But of course you have to give Slot the respect for not touching the team, and rolling with it, and allowing them to repeat the 82pts.

For some reason i've faith we won't go anywhere near these. Mainly because Glasner is Amiron levels of commitment to 3 at the back...successful PL sides and 3 at the back is just so rare.

It's it true none of the players have posted a goodbye?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,988 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Yes of course Slot had no influence over it. Sure why didn't we save ourselves a fortune and just get the tea lady in for 12 months to guide us to that title that we were inevitable going to win?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,553 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Simeone has completely changed it up over last 2 years also, it's very much a high press attacking approach these days , with false nines. Still think he'd win it, and it would not be awful to watch. You know the team would be on it every game with him, that's a building block .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,553 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

……… The new Simeone. It's important to know he has changed

I was hoping so much Martinelli would miss his penalty, standing up sending the voodoo bad vibes at the tv!!

It's strange that the club passed on Alonso, he looked the perfect fit, already had a strong connection with the club, was available, has a good level of experience, good record despite Madrid not working out, comes across as a level headed manager with integrity. Also would have got more time from the fans than pretty much anyone else likely in the running.

He also got the best out of Wirtz ( and Frimpong) who the club you would think want to build the team around, I would be astonished if the club didn't at least consider him when Slot was struggling badly before the last international break. Maybe an approach was made and they couldn't reach agreement, which in itself is worrying as it may suggest Alonso didn't like the proposal put to him. It's hard to see a better alternative out there, anyone else will be a bigger risk. Not a hope Enrique will leave PSG for us right now, so no point even contemplating it unfortunately.

Unfortunately, things had unravelled too far for Slot to stay on next season, it's obvious now that he had lost the players, once that happens it's impossible for a manager/coach to turn it around, so the best thing at that point is to change. It was a much bigger risk to hold onto Slot than to change, as next season would have been pretty much guaranteed to fail by keeping Slot and we would have had to change mid-season which is more difficult, at least now the club can make the change in a more controlled manner and give the new man a better chance to succeed.

I think the club could have handled it better, personally I think it should have been announced before the last game, so that he could have got a decent send off, but, perhaps with CL football still not secured they couldn't do that. Also announcing it a few hours before the CL final, feels like the club trying to bury it to avoid backlash for sacking him.

Whoever does come in has a tough job on their hands, we are probably in a similar situation to before Klopp came in, a squad bereft of confidence and morale at an all time low, so my expectations for next season are low, but, would hope to at least see an improvement in our style of play and a clear plan, which hasn't been apparent this season. It's a risk whoever comes in, and it might not work out, but, Slot was a busted flush at this stage, so had to go.

Ideally Slot would have worked out, I think that's what the club wanted as less risk involved and tbf the club gave him more than enough time to turn it around, but, there was no evidence in the last few months that was going to happen.
