Depends on config. Max in my opinion is 32 ish. But in my experience less is more quality wise.

Was flicking through the stations in car earlier. Is GHR just another name for classic hits? 3 different stations (classic hits on fm, classic hits on dab and GHR) all playing the same thing.

Too many samey stations, nothing there to stand out. Talksport or something like that would be ideal.

Different station run by Bauer. Was called Greatest Hits Radio until Classic Hits injuncted them

They sound similar as the format is the same and the chances of playing the same track is quite high!

GHR is a great station being listening to it a lot last 5 days ago it certainly doesn’t overload the let’s play the same songs over and over see smooth radio for example . If anything comes from this dab trail it’s that station even though I listen to it while working so it’s I phone and Bose speaker for me .

They were playing the exact same corrs song at the exact same time. Maybe a coincidence, maybe a tuning issue.

It happens a lot more often than you might think and not just the two stations you referenced.

GHR format has been successful and hence is being copied.

I've been listening to GHR since it launched. At first I thought it was going to be another DAB+ radio stations that would have a repetitive playlist. How wrong was i. For me one of the best if not the best DAB+ radio out there if you like 70's 80's and 90's hits.

Are there still plans to have RTÉ Gold on DAB?

Listening to most of the current 20+ stations on DAB they all seem to have the same predictable playlist…

You need a reason to tune into a radio station - like BBC Radio 2 which has plenty of specialist shows 6O’s 70’s 80’s 90’s …musicals etc etc..

Wonder if RTÉ Gold will carry their public service remit to include all eras and genres of music ..

I would be glad if they put RTE GOLD on the dab+ radio if they can

Is it just me or are all the DAB stations a bit same-y? There's almost no variety. Middling pop songs from the 60s-90s repeated ad nauseum from the same handful of bands. Even the so called "Alt" channel plays the same songs and bands as the others.

Why not offer something genuinely different to cater for more tastes? There seems to be a good clattering of metal enthusiasts in the country but nothing to cater for them. I assume most music genres could put together a half decent channel, instead of just kaiser chiefs, stereophonics and oasis, or the same six inoffensive 70s acts. An audio books channel would be interesting too.

A lot of the DAB stations in the UK are with a high element of automation. They are like internet streams only via terrestrial broadcast.

I guess the difference between traditional FM and DAB is stronger and more pronounced in Ireland where DAB isn't much established.

Couldn't agree more, with the exception of the already established stations like Nova, Q102, Classic Hits, Newstalk, Radio RíRa, Rewind, the religious ones and Radio Na Life. The rest are all 70s/80s/90s with maybe 2-3 hours of playlists. A more diverse choice is definitely needed

Those stations are mainly spin off stations. Eg Greatest Hits Radio, Heart FM and Magic FM would all be regular stations but the likes of Greatest Hits 80s or Heart 70s or Magic at the Musicals would be much more automated

The UK also have BBC6 music which is, so far, unlike any station we have

Yeh but isn’t it great to have a choice above the national FMs that we normally receive, particularly in the Mux 2 areas. I’m in Sligo and could never receive Classic Hits or Nova on a terrestrial basis. I’m not complaining about samey stations and it’s all free lads! Thanks again to the failtedab team for bringing it to us especially in areas where you could count the Fm station availability on the fingers of one hand!

8Radio and All Classical are good on Mux 1, both quite distinct from anything else available, so hopefully they'll both make it on to Mux 2 as well.

The other thing to bear in mind is that it's only a trial service. It should get better with more variation and less jukeboxes in time

Glad someone mentioned 8radio! Most definitely distinct from the others on DAB n many ways.

If the trial becomes permanent I'd love to see more unique / distinct / niche stations. I have no issue with mainstream choice being the large part of the offering.

I am loving Gravity Hits, very little repetition, the audio processing is very heavy but sounds fantastic given the low bitrate it has to work with, much less poppy than Energy, and no dodgy R&B tracks which so many dance music stations seem drawn towards.

Only negative - some of the songs are sourced from mix compilations, so one song begins beat matching into another and then abruptly cuts off to whatever is the actual next track to be played on the playout. Ruins the flow.

And more generally, the bitrate used across FailteDAB - I really wish they tried to stick to higher bitrates than trying to cram lots of stations into <48Kbps. Many tracks across all of the stations on the muxes are absolutely shredded to bits at that low of a bitrate.

Energy was also full of mix CD tracks at the start, one of things they did actually fix… pity about the music selection.

Stations can pay for more bitrate if they want, the mux isn't actually full yet. Newstalk is much higher despite being primarily speech, for instance.

What type of audience is GoLoud targeting? One minute there is music the next talk radio. Anytime I tune in I hear Mario Rosen Stock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,285 ✭✭✭✭L1011

It's a shop window for their podcasts, hence it's basically random.

If they had some of them on at scheduled times it might get an audience

Velvet was renamed Velvet Sounds on Mux 1 over the weekend

Hopefully Classic Hits makes it to Mux 1 at some stage.

Just another thing to add to this - Raidió Na Life on Mux 1 has some very distinct programming. I turned it on this morning and heard a jazz programme, followed by a classical programme. Looking at their website, their music programming ranges from electronica to world music to classical to trad and indie. And of course there are talk programmes which are unsurprisingly in Irish. Unfortunately they don't seem to provide track information or even the name of the programme you're listening to, but it's certainly worth switching to occasionally if you want a break from the classic hits formats.

Classic Hits are already on FM in the majority of key areas covered by Mux1.
