There was a bit of talk of them beating other provincial winners in challenge games. Sounds great but at the end of the day, they were bet 3 times in championship football .. that's not good enough.

I feel sorry for that minor team it's been a tough week for them . Hopefully a few can move onto the under 20 panel for next year still some nice players on it if we can toughen them up mentally

Not to score in last 10 is disappointing but that's a very good Louth team. Probably disappointed themselves the way they went out of Leinster. Be interesting to see how the other two Leinster teams go in the AI QFs.

Wouldn't be too harsh on them, would need to see the game first to judge. Some good footballers on that team and only a handful will break through to the seniors anyway. When we were winning all round us at U21 plenty supporters were lamenting management prioritising mental toughness and workrate over "individual flair", whatever TF that means. People will see the negatives regardless. But plenty there to work with and the tide can turn quickly if we sort our organisation out. Westmeath were at a low ebb last year but this year are flying with a fresh managerial approach and some young additions that cut their teeth in the U20 B competitions.

That reminds me of a story I heard from a barman around Cavan a few years ago.

When we had won them 4 under 21s back in the last decade a well known customer argued that northern coaches were coming down and destroying Cavan football with their ultra defensive rubbish .. he felt we would never produce decent forwards again and that the players were too process driven and not able to think for themselves.

A few years later, and after a few tankings from Donegal the same customer argued we have no structure at underage and we need to look at getting a northern coach back down to get things back on the road . Moral of the story, its impossible to please everyone..

I think Ed O Hanlon is a serious operator who maximized quite a limited group this year . We need this man in Cavan football.

It's not a story. Heard many many Cavan fans spouting the same nonsense as that customer. Would absolutely sicken your shite having to listen.

This team struggled to win a game last year when U16. They took a tanking off Meath in the Gerry Reilly semi final and then lost to Kildare I think it was in the Shield Final.

This year was actually better than I expected based on last year. They have a few outstanding individuals but are a weak group overall.

As for others commenting on O’Hanlon, he wasn’t McCabe’s choice so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him moved on and a loyal follower parachuted in.

Why do Cavan never cease to find more and more beautiful ways to lose.

Can't fault the heart the lads showed out there today. Young fellas stepping up and playing without fear but the game was lost in the first 40 minutes and the game plan. Trying the same shite which hasn't worked all year.

When we move the ball at pace and take a man on we looked very good.

Hopefully this is the last we see of this slow passive play in the first halfs of games

You would wonder why Casey was not in there all year he is the type of player that these rules suit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,782 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

It was two poor teams. I watched it and thought Dublin must have really come back to the pack to have lost to these. Westmeath showed why they didn’t get out of Division 3.

The first half was atrocious from Cavan. Intercounty players incapable of handpassing. How many turnovers did we give away? Unfortunately, some of the older lads showed why we shouldn’t be relying on them anymore.

Spot on with the assessment there, although some credit has to be given to Westmeath, they likely celebrated hard enough for a week after beating the Dubs so probably were not at 100% after it.

Our lads showed great fight Lovett, Casey, Shedu and Tobin really stepped up.

I reckon the next couple of years will hinge on if McCabe adapts to a more free flowing style which we seen in the second or or reverts to what hasn't worked all year, and I am guessing it will be the latter

Got my hands on a golden ticket and made my way to Mullingar. Nice to be at a game with a big crowd even if most of the Westmeath fans were using Google maps to find Cusack Park. The sad thing is they are not great and despite their brilliant Leinster win, they will still play in Div 3 next year. But unfortunately we are not as good as them, I would say its the weakest Cavan team to take the field since Terry Hyland took over. But the lads there tried and against the odds in the last 10 mins of normal time, with a bit of composure, we should have won it. The less said about our efforts to hold onto a 6 point lead, well it was shambolic. I was bitterly disappointed in Paddy Lynch, I believe he was interviewed after ad bemoaned the criticism of McCabe. Paddy would want to watch that game and look at the effort he put in, nowhere near enough. McGovern I was hoping for more but didn't show up either, Fionntain O Reilly another who didn't take their chance. Gerry Smith not the player he was, I never saw him so bad but in fairness to him he kept going. Holla too his best days are behind him. Casey came out of nowhere and made a real impact, Lovett mixed the sublime with dire, he should've won that game on his own for us but he did show he can be a big threat. We will likely take a beating next day out and I just cant see us stay in Div2. There are tough years ahead. But look, huge congrats to Westmeath on winning their all ireland yesterday.

was at the game and embarrassing stuff really, the few Cavan supporters that were there had their head in their hands, heads shaking, first half was shocking really, Cavan looked afraid and nervous, F O Reilly and C Mc G didn’t step up.

Shehu went out of the game after 20 mins

As for Donoghue I don’t know how he gets game time, must be the Gowna hat, his league form was terrible and no showing against Monaghan how he is still getting chances is beyond me.

Casey showed good but lost 2/3 balls which cost us big time.

We needed injured McVetty and Carolan to play.
Cavan still found away to lose against a division 3 team who played extra time two weeks ago had tough games in Leinster and probably still had a bit of a hangover.
    Simply not good enough

Better performance than I was expecting TBH although we were very poor in many aspects. But when we let the reigns go loose and went at them, we showed great promise at times especially some of the younger lads. Okay, we blew a six point lead in last 10, but credit to WH, 2 great 2 pointers in the blink of an eye and then it was a coin toss. We were on a nice little counter break just before the goal and could have worked a score down the field, but a great rob from Heslin and all momentum was gone. That's the positive slant.

I don't know where it leaves us. It's alright saying we look good when cut loose but that's not sustainable over 70 minutes. You also need to be able to hang tough, control the tempo of a game, cool things down when holding a lead, defend and see a game out, but by God we are poor when it comes to these. Games are usually over by the time we get the memo. Injuries haven't helped but some of the injuries are older players and long term we need to be able to cope without them anyway. Onto the immediate though, I'd be very worried for that team if we land a big gun in the draw. Lacking in power, experience and nous in vital areas and ripe for a hiding.

I think yesterday's rollercoaster is as good as it gets for this summer. We went behind playing muck and then threw off the shackles, which is our trademark. Managed to take the lead through some adventurous passages and shooting, but we lacked the composure to close it out. That's the short of it. And we're left consoling ourselves with individual moments that didn't get the job done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,782 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

I’d agree re as good as it gets. Westmeath are the lowest placed League team we could have faced I believe. I suspect we may get Meath in the draw on Tuesday.

The game yesterday went better than I expected but we’re way off the pace and the older players we have relied on still have way too much of a role. Those lads should be impact subs coming off the bench now.

Who is to blame for development though? Who should have had the cavalry coming through?

On a line of form, Meath would be a good outcome. Westmeath found it easier against them than against Cavan. And Meath were lucky enough to beat Cavan in the League. If Meath get a home draw, they would probably nominate Croke Park?

I have a feeling we'll get Roscommon on Tuesday and we won't beat them either

Was travelling on Saturday so didn't see the game . There is only one thing worse than watching Cavan these days and that is listening to their games on Northern sound Christ it's brutal coverage . So much huffing and spluttering and you can't make head nor tail of the game

Watched the highlights last night we looked like we should have won it . Casey seems a good addition. Lovett has to be more clinical at this level

I still don't know where we are at but I'd say westmeath will get a fair trimming the next day out

Hope we get Dublin or Kerry at home in the draw, don't think we are going any further so might as well get an occassion in Breffni.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,782 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Meath were not lucky to beat Cavan in the League. They should have had us beaten in the first half, the amount of wides they kicked. When push came to shove, like Westmeath on Saturday, they won the match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

Would love the Dubs at home. I am not saying we will beat them but on current form we could / should put it up to them.

Not sure about Kerry, I would like us to go out swinging. I know it would be apt to end a disaster of a season with an absolute trimming. but I get the feeling that this could be the last game for some of our lads and I don't their last game being taken to the cleaners by Kerry- who will likely do some damage to whoever they face next to right a few wrongs.

A few people have said the Rossies and that's a no for me. They are the kind of team that could easily put a rake of goals past us if the mood is on them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

Yeah I agree anything that happened had zero to do with tactics or coaching and just lads doing something. Would be great if they decided to throw in the odd kick pass also.

    Dublin at home, great draw

Dubs travelling to Breffni it is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭baconsarnie

Get in there! Not saying we'll beat them but we can / should have a cut at them. Dubs are at a low ebb, won't pack the place but there will be a decent crowd for that one surely!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 Cavanlad23

If we can play for 70 minutes I do think we have a chance at getting a win over the Dubs. In most games so far this year we have played well for spells, hopefully the last 20 minutes and first half of et of the Westmeath game gives them a blueprint now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭large_palette

Bring it. Let's go out swinging.

One of the teams I was hoping we'd avoid. While far from prime Dublin they are still very talented albeit very much a confidence team, the type of team that will dish out a hiding if you don't stay with them.

If you focus on their problems it's easy to downplay their team, but this is still the team that steamrolled Louth in Leinster. I thought they actually started very well at the weekend and looked very sharp up front. Probably should have scored a few more goals too. Costello and O'Callaghan looked very dangerous and the type of forwards to do a defence like Cavan's serious damage. Defensively they are not great. Can we stay with them and take advantage of that is the question. I'm not so sure. In fact I'd be very nervous. They'll be getting a lot of stick at the minute and will be looking to take it out on someone.
