I have noted Gilbert. I tend not to focus on individual players but Gilbert needs a look at

We were dead on our feet tonight.

The players put so much into the last 5 months, we can't fault them at all.

Massively successful season in my opinion. We won't rest on this. Next season will be great

He's a front row and he was injured? Seems pretty clear to me.

A lot to look forward to next season after a great end to this one! M Devine going to be a miss though, had a very strong run towards the end of the year.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Ioane head injury again, ref called it fine live, tmo said penalty only, but on the one replay I saw looked direct head on head with the defender being upright.

We still need some bulk though, preferably in the second row!

Yes, they were allowed bring back Illo but had to forfeit another player as they had used up their allocation of subs.

Oddly enough I saw this tweet where Connacht actually up with 15 players

The excerpt you posted earlier clearly outlines the four ways where, even in a scenario where a team has used all its replacements, they can bring back on a tactically replaced player.

In this case - because of an injury to a front row player (Finlay Bealham), Connacht brought back on a tactically replaced front row player, Sam Illo.

This should have clearly fit within that rule, and I’ve no idea why they were told they had to lose another player to facilitate this.

Why? The link you shared didn't say anything about forfeiting a player.

The first tweet must be from after the Gavin injury but before the Balham injury.

Hopefully Matthew is just on a sabbatical. He's going out on a positive note having played plenty of games, looks happy. Let's see if he likes Belfast, it'll be tough for him to unseat Doak.

But yes, we really need a piano lifter lock. Unfortunately we're constrained by NIQ slots and I can't think of any really attractive IQ candidates. People mention Cormac Daly and Jack Dunne out in Japan. I haven't seen Daly play and heard that Dunne hasn't been wildly impressive. Sure Lancaster has a view on Dunne as they know one another from Leinster.

All of this is speculative based on the belief that CC qualification has eased budgetary constraints a little.

I think because Finley's injury wasn't HIA, blood or as a result of foul play.

I'm not saying they got it right, I know from past experience that Munster had at least two apologies from thd head of referees in the URC as a result of being forced down to 14. I'm just trying to explain my understanding of it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

From my reading of the laws it's pretty clear they didn't get it right.

Unacceptable if this is happening regularly. Surely this is the 4th official's only job.

That laws covers thd using of a tactical sub, maybe the law that covers forfeiting a player comes into it. It was the 4th official who went out to the ref, the ref seemed to accept and understand why Connacht had to forfeit the player.

    On a few things said.

Gilbert is a class act, one poor game doesn't change that.

I honestly think Frawley will struggle to find a starting spot. Of course Ireland squad politics could come into play and he gets to start. He's not good enough to displace our starters at centre or full back and Ioane is a class act at 10.

When you consider we were missing Hansen. West, Forde and Jansen and then had a bunch of injuries during the game it's no surprise that we lost to the no.1 seed away.

The future is very bright and I can't wait for next season.

Frawley and Ioane will play 10 for the whole of next season (one player does not play every game) We need 3 OHs and we have them now.

Injury, international duty and form will decide.

Steyn was all over ye. He should have been cleaned out early doors.

There'll be plenty of game time at 10 for both Ioane and Frawley next season and Naughton will sub in when Frawley is away playing 10 for Ireland. Once/when we get them all back fit we have an excellent set of backs for next season.

We played very well last night and gave the best team in the league a right rattle. Two tries easily given away by Gilbert's aimless kick and O'Brien's dropped restart, but let's not forget that Gilbert has been excellent all season and whose kicking is the reason we made the last 8, and O'Brien brought some real aggression when he came on.

Our scrum survived, our line out was good, we competed well against the Scottish international back row and Murphy and Ioane were excellent. Especially Ioane who I've never seen so fired up as last night. It's been a great season with real promise for next year. We lost to the team who'll likely win the tournament. Well done all.

Such a good performance from Josh Ioane, who finished the season brilliantly. Thought Chris Paterson’s (who I thought was good to listen to in commentary) take on it was exactly right - Glasgow’s hard press had to stutter and stop every time Ioane got the ball because of the quality of his late stepping and his balance.

It's great to see Connacht back at the races. Should be a good year for them next year.

In relation to us going down to 14.

We had used all our subs.

Finlay got injured and had to leave the field - that means we are down to 14.

A scrum is awarded, in order to avoid uncontested scrums and going down to 13 we must bring on Sam. so Sam comes on and SHL goes off.

We simply go down to 14 because Finlay was injured and we had no more subs.

It just looked weird because Finlay and SHL went off at the same time.

If Finlay went off (down to 14) and then 5 mins later a scrum is called we have to put on a front row player so its a straight swap with SHL and Sam.

Where in the laws is this set out? Seems directly contradictory of 3.33:

"3.33. Tactically replaced players may return to play only when replacing:

    1. An injured front-row player.
    2. A player with a blood injury.
    3. A player with a head injury.
    4. A player who has just been injured as a result of foul play (as verified by the match officials).
    5. The nominated player described in Law 3.19 or 3.20."

There is no mention of dropping a player.

    1. Sam Illo was tactically replaced.
    2. Finaly Bealham is a front row player and was injured.
    3. According to law 3.33 (a), Sam Illo can legally replace Finlay Bealham.
    4. Connacht have a full trained front row at all points, therefore the uncontested scrums framework is irrelevant.

Which part of the above is incorrect?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,096 ✭✭✭Shelflife

My understanding is that Sam can come back on for Finlay IF we have a substitute slot available.

You don’t get unlimited front row replacements, otherwise the whole front row could be replaced twice during a game.

So you get 8 replacements, if you have used 7 replacements and have only a scrum half left on the bench, it’s then that 3.33 kicks in and allows you to replace a prop with a tactically removed prop.

If you have used 8 replacements you don’t get an extra sub just because they are a prop/hooker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Is that set out in the laws? 3.21 prevents unlimited front row replacements - "A player may be replaced if injured. An injured player may not return once replaced."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,096 ✭✭✭Shelflife

3.5For other matches, the match organiser decides how many replacements may be nominated, up to a maximum of eight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

That's the number of replacements named on the bench. More than 8 substitutions can and do occur quite often due to HIAs etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

You’re 100% wrong on this based on the World Rugby laws - unless there is some sort of specific URC competition regulation around this (which I can’t see anywhere) then Connacht should not have been reduced to 14 players last night.

The AR got it arseways, you lose a player if the game has to move to uncontested scrums, but to prevent that you are allowed to bring back on a player who was tactically replaced, even if you’ve used all your replacements. It is really clear on this point.
