Your last point is way off the mark and shows a complete lack of understanding of football history. Have you actually seen the kinds of batsht countries and total fukwits that have hosted competitions. Ireland having beef with Israel is small time stuff for UEFA.

Actually I think many of the Israeli players have served in the IDF so I wouldn't be sure how horrified they are

There seems to be far less opposition to the war in Israel than there really should be, and I don't think it helps to cover that point up

Would the Israeli team be safe? I'd be broadly pro Palestinian but I can see that there is an unhinged obsession in Ireland with that conflict and I'd say there is quite a few individuals who would get psychotically angry if they came across any Israeli never mind players representing the place.

The game obviously cannot go ahead in Dublin. The security risk is too high.

One thing that annoys me about the coverage is reports saying "fans" threw tennis balls on last night.

I wouldn't call anyone try to disrupt IRL - Qatar a fan tbh. There was some serious hostility to the tennis ball people where I was sitting - thought it could end up self-policing if a protester inadvertently picked an aggressive person to sit beside

That's not the context I'm making the point in

My point is if Ireland can't handle the prospect of protests against Israel from a crowd of scarf wearing lefties and have to move it out of the country then how will they cope with possibly more hostile situations in the Euros or a big UEFA final.

If it were moved it's a sign of weakness from the FAI and their inability to deliver.

They have to serve in the IDF, its mandatory to serve in the military in Israel.

Their Prime Minister is an evil psycho but I think its stupid to act like everyone from Israel is the same.

It should be played in Dublin, the protestors bark is worse than their bite, the security in the stadium and police would be well able to handle them.

This is nonsense. All of Israel’s home games have been played in Hungary at a neutral and several away games as well. It is not a reflection of the opponent’s they have faced its a reflection on Israel and the problems their government is causing. Ireland won’t be losing out on hosting Euro games or future Europa League or Conference Finals no matter what happens with this Israel fixture.

It was always likely the game just couldn't be played here. Too many loud troublesome idiots that would want their 5 minutes of fame.

What happens when Israel gets to the Euros and are drawn in a group based in Ireland?

They did have to serve - but serve they did. So they're part of all this

I think there's no evidence though to suppose as you did that the players are horrified with what's going on. Netanyahu seems to have a decent amount of popular support

Matt Healy travelling with the squad to Canada. Supposedly won't be the only LOI player who'll be called into the squad. Two others are being considered with one of them being a young player called up to travel for experience.

I am not a "Lefty" by any definition, never voted for any Left party nor will ever. But I am astounded by what Israel are doing in Gaza and the West Bank, it is utterly repulsive. The irony seems lost on them as a race that once faced extermination that they themselves are now the exterminator of Palestinians. It's akin to people who suffered abuse as children going on to be abusers themselves. Unfortunately we don't have a strong American president to keep them in check, we have the tail wagging the dog. For people to be upset about tennis balls being thrown on to the pitch v's people being repulsed by what's going on in Gazza is some contrast. If I had a vote on it, I would vote No to play Israel.

They do have to serve. And you show me evidence that they are not horrified by what their Government are doing, if you are so sure how they feel about the situation. Do you think all German soldiers were in favour of Hitlers war? or what he was doing to Jewish people.

It's ok and proper to have an opinion, it's also ok to have no opinion to not be concerned about what happens half way across the world it doesn't make you a bad person, for those who want to separate politics and world events from sport that's their entitlement despite what the thought and moral police say….it's not ok to force opinions on others

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,574 ✭✭✭HalloweenJack

The problem with international sports is it is literally a contest between nations to determine which is the best and politics does interfere, rightly or wrongly.

Just look at all the care that has to be taken when UEFA make a draw for international competitions; there's so many teams that van't be drawn in the same groups because of political problems.

The final is in Wembley who have a proven track record of rioting in the stadium for a Euros final. Are they going to take it off England after they proved they can't peacefully host a Euros final ?

You don't have a clue about the hosting of football tournaments. You just want to big it up to tarnish the protesters and make them out to be a violent threat despite all evidence to the contrary

The police and private security should make sure the FAI pay up front, in the past Delaney tried to stiff both.

I was sitting near the incident Thursday a few threw on tennis balls 30000 didn't do anything.

So here we are pandering to the minority and RTE.

If only there was a separate thread to talk about whether people think the match should be played or not…..🙄

So the Republic of Ireland general discussion thread isn't the place to discuss whether a match involving the Republic of Ireland should be played?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,097 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

You're good. I'll stick to the Republic of Ireland discussion thread when discussing things about the Republic of Ireland team.

jeysus… I try not to go near CA/IMHO if I can at all! I’d say far better discussion to be had here when it’s relevant.

Honestly, this is my biggest concern. I was in the West Upper, and the vast majority of the protesters were student types, with the odd exception, such as the man I posted about earlier in the thread. Most people either laughed at them, were mildly annoyed by them, or stared at them in disbelief, but that was the extent of it. 99% of the people at the game didn't throw tennis balls onto the pitch; they were busy watching a game of football. 99% of the people going to Israel game will be going to watch a game of football also.

However, certain factions seem determined to keep pushing this boycott agenda, and people are going to be sick to the back teeth of hearing about it by the time the game comes around. My biggest concern is that tempers will flare on the night, and some of the protesters could end up getting into bother. The stewards and security staff may then have to step in to protect them.
