Can you think of any? Inspired by a thing in the forgotten 90s radio hits thread about the Sound Crowd.

I don't think there would be many. The sweet spot would be in around the 90's when there were still a few small pirate stations and the rise of bedroom DJ mixes etc. such as the Sound Crowd. Earlier stations played more commercial stuff and any dance stuff would have come from clubs more than the pirates. I do seem to recall that the Ska mix of Damien Dempsey's Dublin Town started out locally before being pushed by Gerry Ryan. It seems to have vanished from online and I think he said himself he hates it.

David Grey being one that comes to mind straight away.

Chris Rea in the 1980s .. much higher profile over here

How big was he in England before "The Road to Hell"?

First top 40 hit 1978 Fool if You Think it's Over. On David Grey, I had his first 3 albums and saw him in a small pub in Limerick when he was testing out White Ladder so I think it was more that Ireland in general broke him rather than Pirates.

Chris Rea's career was in decline by the early 80s, his latest album was not released in Ireland.

By chance Jason Maine got a copy while in Belfast (iirc) and Novas music 'director ' thought one particular track was a perfect fit for Nova,

That track was 'I can hear your heartbeat ', the original album version ,not the one played on radio today ,has a great guitar riff intro

tracks becoming hits because of pirate radio was more a UK thing then a here thing really, and even then it was a london pirate thing.
the few grime and the few garage artists who made it big were either involved in, or had their tracks broken on london pirate radio and some of those tracks ended up here.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

Apparently "Epidemic" by British duo Area 51 was so popular in Ireland in the mid-1990s that a Sound Crowd-related remix charted here around 2002/2003.

Agreed on both. Chris Rea, Fool if you think it's over, was a big AM pirate hit here, before it caught on in the UK, likewise later with I can hear your heartbeat. David Gray was championed by pirates here that had him packing out Dublin venues, before he hit it big. I believe he actually credited the Dublin pirates of the time at one of his gigs, saying that it was the reason most people were there.

I recently listened to an interview of Declan Meehan on pirate.ie, talking about this aspect. He mentioned Give it up by KC and the Sunshine Band. Apparently it was an album track that Nova started playing and the Dublin record label office got it released locally here, before it was then released in the UK, because of the Irish success.

Re-recorded in 1988 for the New Light For Old Windows album. I prefer the 1983 version but the 1988 12" mix is fabulous too.

I made a Chris Rea Singles Collection 1978-2017 for my iTunes this year and wrote notes on every one of the 90 tracks. https://apopfansdream.wordpress.com/artists-only/chris-rea-the-singles-collection-1978-2017/

Thanks Ger, that is correct ,KC and the Sunshine Band were in the twilight of their career and again the 'Give it up' track taken from the album (it was nkt released as a single)fitted the Nova format ,was added to the playlist ,went on high rotation, and the rest is history.

The memory is not what it used to be but I like to think that there was certain songs played on the likes of Sunset or Pulse that were huge Irish hits.

Scooter was huge in Ireland in the mid 90s mostly down to pirate radio.

I don't think I would associate David Gray with the Irish pirate stations, if so which ones - the mid 90s ones ??. My memory of David Gray's rise in popularity was him playing Galway Arts Festival in 1994 and lots of video airplay on No Disco on Network 2 around this time, presented by Donal Dineen.

Late Night Radio by David Gray got a lot of play by Spectrum and its successor Phantom. That was from an earlier album of his called Sell Sell Sell.

Sell Sell Sell and its most played track Late Night Radio was out during 1996. Spectrum started in July 1996 and Phantom followed it in late 1997, but really got going in 1998. I remember certain deejays giving that song a good play, for example Jack Hyland.

Not so much an Irish pirate station, but a post popped up on facebook telling the story of Charlene.

Charlene recorded "I've Never Been to Me" in 1976, and it reached #97 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1977. When released again in 1982, the single (1611 MF) spent 20 weeks on the Hot 100, peaked at #3, and stayed there for three weeks.[5] It also reached #7 on AC and #60 on Hot Country Songs. The song has been her only top 40 hit.

In 1982, Scott Shannon, a disc jockey then working at Tampa radio station WRBQ-FM, began playing the version from the Charlene album (with the original spoken bridge) at the behest of his girlfriend, and response from local listeners was such as to motivate Shannon, a former Motown employee, to alert Motown president Jay Lasker of the track's hit potential. By this time, Charlene had lost her recording contract, moved to the United Kingdom, and was working in a sweetshop in Ilford in London. Upon locating Charlene, Lasker personally telephoned her to invite her to re-sign with Motown in order to facilitate the re-release of "I've Never Been to Me"

Terry Wogan pushed the track on his morning show.

Another 'Nova ' track that was on very high rotation was Paul Ashfords - One in every town.

Stepasides - Last Resort was also on high rotation and was re-recorded with the lyrics 'Radio Nova shes my radio Queen ,got my latest 45's........Radio Nova rock'in the Bay '

Radio Limnui's John "the Man" Frawley used to play Crystal Gayle's album track River Road at the same time every morning to signal it was time to head to school. Played it at the wrong time one morning and half of Limerick was hunted out the door 45 mins early! It still gives Limerick people of a certain age PTSD!

I picked that Charlene song as a RD Channel 2 powerplay when it was released … it got played every top of hour, for a week. It was the first Ch2 powerplay to reach No1 in the charts. We obviously played no part in its success (no one was listening)… you just reminded me of the time. 😂

Absolutely right Declan… we played a lot of David Gray and even got an exclusive interview from him on one of his early trips over here. He was aware of the airplay but was amazed to hear that we were a pirate station.

In 2005 it was named the eighth greatest one hit wonder of all time in a 2FM countdown, just ahead of Richard Harris's "McArthur Park" and Hues Corporation's "Rock the Boat". The top seven was:

    1. "The Macarena" by Los del Rio
    2. "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum
    3. "99 Red Balloons" by Nena
    4. "Riverdance" by Bill Whelan
    5. "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies
    6. "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang
    7. "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas.

For some reason 'When Sly calls' by Michael Frank, I always associate with John Clarke in his pirate days.

Michael Franks 'when sly calls' and 'Island Life' featured a lot on Nova ,favourites of Chris Cary.

Paul Ashford sounded a bit like Philo in my opinion.

Sixth Season by The Sound Crowd, or The Sound Crowd Orchestra if you prefer, was heavily promoted in 1994 on certain pirates, especially dance pirates. It had more or less entered the Irish Top 30 before 2FM were really playing it. The two guys behind The Sound Crowd were Tim Hannigan (these days known as Mr. Spring on 2FM!), who had a show on dance pirate Sunset FM, and Mark Kavanagh, who had a much acclaimed dance show on mixed music pirate DLR.

I forgot to follow up on that specific reference in the first post!
