Not any centre half either,we need someone who can come straight into the team and has some experience

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,551 ✭✭✭giveitholly

And if they don't then we need to riot at dawn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,056 ✭✭✭✭noodler

It's gonna be Real, PSG, Barca or Bayern for Ibou.

And so I don't actually think it's gonna be about money in the end.

We just aren't in the same position of strength we were a few years ago.

I think the biggest mistake the club made was giving Gravenberch 250k. I don't think he is worth that and every player now will look for similar wages. I would actually prefer if the 250k was given to Konate instead of Gravenberch,it would if been money better spent by the club

Of course it's about money. I don't blame the guy. I like him but he certainly drove me crazy this season. I won't shed a tear that he's gone. On his day, excellent player, legend he isn't.

Did the club really give Gravenberch 250k? I've heard it suggested that wage estimations by the likes of Capology etc... are very unreliable.

VVD also gave a cryptic response in one interview where he said he would have more to say after the World Cup…

Established international players in their prime leaving on a free is brilliant for the player, dreadful for the club.

He is certainly worth 50m so any club getting him for free can easily give him 250k a week [13m a year].

We are at a crossroads much quicker than anyone thought with so many established players leaving.

Likely Jones will leave or if not he will also run down his contract and will not be too bothered how we do next year.

I think it is only reasonable that even if we finish outside the top 6, as long as there is some change in our performance and the kids at CB look like they are promising, it will be a step in the right direction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,242 ✭✭✭Enzokk

I do not expect the club to tell journalists we are freaking out about our CB situation so that any club we approach to sign a player will know how desperate we are and will squeeze us for every euro they can. But that is just me thinking out loud.

Why oh why is the club supposedly backing slot for another season, the man is a disaster and players dont wanna work under him, club is a laughing stock, last 4 league games we got 2 points outta 12, the man is way out of his depth and yes he won the league but I dont care what people say, that was klopps team

    We'll see.

Same money for one of the continent's big four would be an easy decision right now, extra cash the cherry on top

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,551 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Laughing stock, well if our club is a laughing stock then what does that make the majority of other clubs? And why would it bother you what anyone thinks of the club? That says more about you than them.

Aren’t you a utd fan pretty sure you were posting the same nonsense in that thread last year being a Utd fan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,551 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Yeah we don't know for certain but a few itk's have mentioned it. Might not be true and hopefully its not

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,551 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Look lads, this is what a bit of good news looks like in case we have all forgotten

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,524 ✭✭✭brevity

it could be the top end. With bonuses included. Seems like a big contract. Szobo probably looking for more.

it does set a dangerous precedent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,551 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Yeah we don't know the exact details of his contract or if there is any truth to those rumours. Is it around 125k Szobo is supposed to be on? No way would he be happy with that if Grav is on 250k

I think it’s a bit of revisionist history to say we did not expect a crossroads. A comedown from the heights of the Klopp era, with most of the old guard leaving was inevitable. It just got postponed a little by the midfield gelling quickly and then dropping off significantly.
Personally I’m indifferent about Konate leaving. I honestly don’t think he is good enough for where we want to be as a club. Maybe we don’t get there anyway, but I feel he is more of a journeyman in the style of Lallana, Sakho etc. players that Klopp would use but then move on when someone better was available.

Jones I like, and would like for him to stay, but that’s more sentimental perhaps.

Read my comments im a long time liverpool fan and yes I praised United like I praise other teams if they deserve it, im not a spiteful bitter supporter, ur obviously a slot admirer who cant see any wrong with the guy, I praised slot the season we won league and thought he was a brilliant coach but alas time has proven me wrong, he got lucky with klopps team and we have gotten progressively worse since then

I still really hope something can be sorted with Konate… for all his occasional errors, I’d be very surprised if we get someone in who’s an improvement - or even a match - immediately.

When you manage to navigate the 22/23 season squad transition so well that you end up qualifying for the CL in 24/25 and winning a trophy before winning the league in 2024/2025 , you might have expected we'd done alot of the heavy lifting.

When you then spend an absolute fortune, you might well have expected even more progress on the overall project before 26/27.

Ekitike on Konate’s instagram asking him to “Sign Brother”

He does seem a huge personality in the squad and one they could do it.

I'll reserve judgement on Konate leaving until I see who we sign in his place.

He's not good enough to warrant outrage by default IMO.

I think it would be a big loss to lose Konate, especially for free. He didn't have a good season but on his day he is top 5 in league centre half. With VVD not getting any younger we should pay Konate what he needs to stay. Give him more responsibility, make him vice captain, he will repay it alĺ and more.

That was the summer we revamped our midfield if I remember correctly? We went into the next season with an experienced and seasoned back line and forwards. The midfield got up to speed and we ended up with the Carling Cup and 3rd place. And then of course we all know what followed the following season.

Last summer we tried to overhaul our forward line and full backs position. We all know how that turned out. Unfortunately at the same time our new midfield unit went to shiite. MacAllister's form fell off a cliff, and imo Gravenberch was found out at no 6 as teams pushed up on him and he couldn't play that position as well as he did last season. Szobo was fine.

Imo we are back to square one regards midfield. Let's hope MacAllister doesn't turn out like Fabinho and can't rediscover his form. Grav imo can't play that deep role but hopefully can further forward. At the moment it looks like we have only got 2 years out of that midfield.

I think many of us hoped Konate would sign for continuity when there is so much else to do. However if he leaves, there may be an opportunity to bring someone with a better profile for passing and progressing the ball into the position. We saw last season that teams left Konate with the ball as he couldn't hurt them with his passing. Also with Bradley and Frimpong as right backs, neither are great passers and we have had trouble progressing the ball from that area of the pitch. I believe Sensini and Van Hecke are good in his area so you can see why we were linked.

I was watching some youtube videos of Jacquet (I know!) and what stands out is his physicality. He does remind me of Konate, long and rangy with good recovery speed.

The French league is probably the best preparation you can have for the Premier League in terms of the physical demands. Players who arrive from Ligue 1 dont tend to have too many problems adapting, it seems to me.

So long story short, you spend 60 million on a player, he should be ready to go. I think Jacquet probably is. It's a gamble but a season playing beside Virgil will do wonders for his development.

I think only time tells how important Konate is, hard to find a CB that can handle the physical demands of the PL and he seems a well liked character within the squad.

Jones is an excellent squad option, problem is he sees Gravenberch getting 250K basic and he wants 200k+, again if he runs out his contract he will probably get something close to this elsewhere.

Losing prime assets for nothing is not good business. Ibou should be hitting his prime. Under contract would be worth 50m plus. Its terrible business.

I wonder if there is a long term plan to bring Quansah back next summer and so that could result in the club being happy with VVD / Gomez / Leoni / Jacquet for next season which would then upgrade to Quansah / Leoni / Jacquet in time and see how the current batch of academy CBs that were bought recently develop. Quansah would meet a lot of HG requirements and would be approaching 160ish senior appearances with a few years experience in top level leagues & European football.
