well KK I was just thinking of the old intercounty setup which involved intermediate and junior players which was a great competition. I don’t know if you would remember that? eg we played Tipp in an all Ireland final in Portlaoise in 1990 a packed house and a great win by the chosen people. John Marnell Micky Walsh from the Boro John Mahon from Mooncoin, Paudie Holden from Mullinavat I’d have to look up the rest to be sure. The glory days every all Ireland won that year bar the senior colleges, tech schools, camogie, handball, minor,U21, junior. Bet Tipp in the U21 in Portlaoise as well. Jaysus I have to stop I’m getting too excited.

well KK. Just an afterthought Pat Dwyer, Liam Simpson, Micky Walsh, Charlie Carter and Pat Walsh from Windgap all cut their teeth in that competition so it could have its uses. The U21 in the late sixties took a while to gather momentum then and I was surprised the U19 competition didn’t expand yet , Maybe it will.

well KK again, another afterthought Derek Lyng came up from the KK junior ranks.

Before my time Marrooned. I have vague memories of the Intermediate competition but in the end it was literally three counties with teams entering so it died off.

On the U23, I don't see the benefits of a separate panel for it, particularly as most counties will have a number of behind closed doors challenge matches for 2nd string players on the panel during the league at least.

fair enough KK but everything should be considered at this stage.

just a question. Can a coup be implemented.

Ah! That record is unbelievable and awesome. Inevitably, after decades of success like that complacency sets in, amongst players, mentors, officials and supporters. That level of dominance was unsustainable. We in Clare had a very good team in the 90s, could have won more than one all irelands but didn't power on like we could have done. We didn't alter the status quo much. Limerick have!. Limerick learnt from munster rugby and adopted a more professional approach than any previously seen in hurling history. They got their structures right, got ample funding in place and not all from one source, got a good management and coaching staff and turned an excellent team into one for the ages. 5 all Irelands in 7 years was a kilkenny type achievement. Next up is Cork who will dominate hurling for the next decade imo. Whither Kilkenny? Ye have too many hurlers and too much tradition to be down for long. How will Kilkenny adapt to the new hurling world, how strong will the rebound be, how successfull will they be etc.? All fascinating questions, not just for Kilkenny supporters but for all hurling fans.

Any appetite for Mark Bergin as Lyng's successor?

Surely the sight of Cork and or Tipperary dominating should kick the Kilkenny county board into action. Nothing like seeing your nearest rivals to raise your own standards. I think in Kilkenny we were not too bothered with Limerick winning all their All Irelands (as they were so far behind in the roll of honour), although I for one did not want them win the 5 in a row.

Sad news with the passing of Jim Treacy of Bennettsbridge, a gentleman. He captained Kilkenny when they won the All Ireland in 1967. Also won All Irelands in 1972, 1974 and 1975. May he rest in peace

RIP Jim Treacy instantly recognisable with his silver hair great corner back for Bennettsbridge &Kilkenny one of my boyhood heroes along with Seamus Cleere from great Bridge teams

we must be of the same vintage another excellent team that could have won four in a row at least and lost a superstar through injury Tom Walsh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 covcat

But for terrible injury Tom Walsh would be talked about as one of all time greats in my opinion

a break from the Cody era!!!! And replace those players who were part of that most successful eras of all times with what? Ridiculous

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,412 ✭✭✭Archduke Franz Ferdinand

it remains to be seen if this cork team can win ONE all lreland , let alone dominate for a decade…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,128 ✭✭✭Marrooned

absolutely talked about as the first superstar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 covcat

Agree when Cork win an All Ireland and then back it up with 2 in a row maybe then talk about decade long domination because for all their obvious potential it's still 20 years since their last AI

A new era we have to move on . Saying we haven’t got the players is counter productive and gives the management and CB all the excuses they need so I would wish everyone would refrain from that. I for one think we have the players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,039 ✭✭✭Nickindublin

The players are always there. I have said it for a long time here. But you cant put square plugs into round holes. I feel thats where Lyng went wrong re the style of hurling. It all can look great until you meet better opposition amd more intensity.

The most disappointing thing about Derek Lyngs tenure is the lack of bringing in new/younger players. From Dublin match we had Bolger,Doyle,Moore&Shine as only ones who hadn't played under Cody and I think I'm right in saying they were all substituted which on the day may or may not of been right call.I would like to think that in the County of Kilkenny we do have players but time and effort to bring them in develop them give them as much game time as possible let them make mistakes and instead of hooking them teach them.On style of play over the years posters on here have called for us to do this don't do that etc the problem with playing catch up is by the time you have caught up things have moved on.Surely you first get a group of players together and you then develop a style that suits that group then you fight like dogs and cats from forwards back like our great teams of past and forget about this tippy tappy stuff it's not for us and never will be. Unfortunately grammar is not my strong point but hope all understand what I'm trying to say

One more thing on Huw Lawlor it seemed people on here were aware for sometime of his intentions to travel(there was talk he was going 2025)I'm assuming management must of been aware of his intentions.I think there are close to 40 clubs In Kilkenny surely one of them has a full back who could be looked at.Ok Moylan has been injured but before his injury can anyone tell me how many minutes game time has he had with seniors? Mikey Carey has done as good as could be expected but he is better used elsewhere

I think for the problem we have with our forwards is that none of them have any great pace and between this and the slow ball coming from our backs it makes them easy to play against. To compensate the lack of pace the forwards movement needs to be very good also but unfortunately, bar Eoin Cody at times, the movement in our forward line is nearly non existant. Maybe this is as a result of the ball coming in and they don't trust the defenders to pick out theres runs (or maybe it's why the defenders are hitting that type of ball in) but its a big problem for us. We severely lack an Eamon O'Shea type of forwards coach who could work on our movement and get the best out of our forwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 113 ✭✭Takeyourpoints

Yes I think our forward movement seems worse due to the slow ball coming into them. The last day I saw a few of them run into space looking for a quick ball but then the ball never came in due to them playing an extra pass. By the time the player delivering the ball looked up, the run had been made and that space that had been created was gone and the back was right behind them.

As a corner forward that would be incredibly frustrating. In the second half they stopped making those runs as often as they likely didn't trust that the ball would be delivered. I thought Mossy did excellently to win the ball when it came in quick to him and he laid off some great passes.

yes covcat Huw Lawlor was putting off travelling for about four years so the intention was there, it wasn’t a bolt out of the blue and why wasn’t there preparations made? And at this stage Huw felt the future wasn’t great to stay on.

I think the criticism of not bringing through young players is a little unfair on Lyng. The evidence from the last few years of U20 is that there weren't too many ready to make the step up. This is not a Lyng problem, its a county problem.

Agree on implementing our own style though, we need to focus on a style that suits us rather than copying what other counties are doing - if we keep doing that we'll always be behind the curve

I often read that we struggle when we play teams who use sweeper/spare man which by the way we do. The fact is you can only have a spare man if A)opposition withdraw a forward or B)we withdraw a forward either way both teams have spare man.So what you do is go man on man and stop letting these SPARE MEN Lording over us simple really

If the oppisition withdraw a forward and play a sweeper, all pushing up on them and going man to man is going to do is crowd out your own forwards and make it more difficult for them to make space, while at the same time leaving an ocean of space in front of our own defence. The best way to play against the sweeper, is to play the wings and drag the sweeper out of the middle, then get runners from midfield/half forward through the middle. I thought our minors did this well at times against Galway.
