It will depend entirely on the extent of their involvement really. Leinster's issue in recent seasons hasn't been about just providing c. 20 players into the wider squads, it's the fact that Leinster have routinely had 15-16 players in the match 23, as these are the players who are getting their minutes managed etc.

Just having players in the international squad won't massively impinge on Connacht (or any team) unless they're actively in the match squads - i.e. Ireland name a 37-man squad for the 6 Nations, but we released 11 players back to their provinces between Round 3 and Round 4 to get game time in the URC (so i.e. Ulster got 5 players back).

He played one match at 12 for us this season and last season. He played one match at 12 and one at 13 for Ireland last year.

He can play either but with his speed I think 13 is a better fit.

A perfect replacement for Ringrose at international level.

He is a battering ram. I give you that. What more he can be is up to him

I see Cardiff are opening g a fan zone for their qf. That seems like a good idea for Connacht in future for away knockout matches.

Open up the bar at top(or the bottom) of the clan stand, and show the match.

It could generate some income. It would definitely generate more interest and coverage of the match locally.

That's my view as well and I have been encouraged by Forde's contributions at 13 more recently so it may work out that a 12. Gavin 13. Forde pairing is more favorable than the other way around.

They need to sort out the bars in the Clan Stand first.

As someone who uses rugby games as an excuse to go drinking, I'd rather go dry at the Sportsground at the moment.

Pints and service are absolute muck. I swear the kegs are gone off.

I've emailed them about it, but I'm bringing cans next season

My major gripe is the lack of a mix zone. When people are seated in different areas there is no option to meet for a pint before or after.

We have four extremely talented centres born within five years of each other. All were/are primarily 12s, but we're going to need to figure out how to get the best use out of them.

Some* at Leinster still dont appreciate how good they had it!

He is probably the best coach Connacht could possibly have to get the best out of the likes of Gavin, Forde, West, Devine, Naughton etc etc

    *tiny, yet vocal

10min - How he talks about the recruitment of the new coaches (interestingly they involved some of the players), and what their roles will be.

Even how he talks about the training and how continuity feeds in to skills and selection.

This is how the pro's do it.

As the HC he has also selected brilliantly to mix and match and also giving tons of minutes to the academy lads.

He's a fantastic head coach and he's in the right setting where he has control of things with nobody questioning his decisions.

Couldn't agree more. Get on Connacht . Other than me of course but I'm not sure my opinion matters to Stuart Lancaster 😂

I just have this feeling that this season is a long way from over yet for Connacht.

Just in relation to any mixed zone, the stadium was designated a national sporting area on 17 December 2025. It's a fairly exlusive club with Croke Park, Lansdowne, RDS, Thomond Park, the National Boxing Stadium, Páirc uí Caoimh and Semple Stadium being the other designated national sporting arenas.

This means easier alcohol licensing requirements (flat fee per annum of €250 with only one trip to the District Court each year) and covers events outside of matches.

The trade off appears to be that you're going to be limited to the geographic footprint set out in the Statutory Instrument (see Schedule 1 & 2 here). So if you wanted to run bars or have people drinking out in the plaza area between the Clan Stand and College Road, you're back into occasional licences. These are parasitic on an existing on-license so you'd have to have a local publican run the affair, which may be in conflict with contractual obligations attached to the Clan Stand. Because it's an area generally accessible to the public, you're talking about security and fencing costs as well.

28th of May 2016 - right up there with the best days of my life. I'll never forget the atmosphere under the stand as the teams arrived - spine tingling stuff.

Love it. I was on the steps on the far side. It got even better as the band stopped playing, and the doors of the bus opened. Pat Lam and John Muldoon have both spoken about the impact that had on the team on the day.

The story goes that Leinster lodged a complaint in the aftermath, and were told to take a hike.

Jansen is a big loss. SO'B able for Glasgow BR/pack?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Glasgow are an awful lot stronger than the mid-Six Nations team Connacht beat in Galway.

7 changes in the pack, with 4 more in the backline as they loop back in their internationals - and I think each and every one of those changes is a pretty big positive.

Jansen is a simply enormous loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭RonnieL

Jansen is a big loss for sure, but I have no doubt Paul Boyle is going to come in like a man possessed. Darragh Murray and the two hookers being back are big pluses (although Eoin De Buitlear did a great job in their absence). Fingers crossed the Bundee/Devine partnership goes well. Very excited.

More of a Henshaw than a Ringrose, just my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 592 ✭✭✭mogwai81

I know that in Gavins first year with the U20's he played left wing (I believe to just get the best players on the pitch) and center in his second year but hes never struck me as someone with much pace. Maybe those that have seen him live would have a better understanding if hes quick or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,988 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

Its a serious rise for John Devine. Only made his 1st start 2 months ago.

Like Gavin he was more of a 12 at u20.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,054 ✭✭✭Zeugnis

You're right, that Glasgow selection is ridiculously strong, they're maximum strength. And of course Jansen is a loss, but Boyle is a good carrier, more evasive than SJ's 'run it straight' attritional approach. And with SHL and Cian we can still get an edge.

Glasgow didn't convince against Ulster, which gives me hope. Franco Smith is a great coach who has built a very effective system there. While it's a big ask, we have momentum, good morale, and are unburdened by expectations - it's a free hit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,000 ✭✭✭b.gud

Interestingly even though it's first vs 8th the URC Twitter had a win probability table the other day and Glasgow vs Connacht was actually the closest match at 54% vs 46% compared to Leinster vs Lions which had the largest margin at 78% vs 22%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Glad we've decided against having Carty and Naughton on the bench together. Tough on Hugh to find himself well down the depth chart, he probably would have fancied his chances at nailing down the 13 shirt coming into the season. I fancy him to have a big 26/27 if he can get a decent pre season under his belt and put some games together.

Yeah, agreed, it's by far and away the pick of the games this weekend I think. It looks like two well coached, very attacking teams who play a high tempo game going back and forth on a 4G pitch. Sounds ideal for late May rugby - I've said that now so it'll probably be a dour 9-6 penalty fest! 😊
