Play has already began, so time to start the thread!

Sinner the heavy, heavy favourite for the men's side, difficult to see how he gets beaten. Maybe Djoko could do it if he gets that far.

The women's side should be between the top four seeds of Sabalenka, Rybakina, Swiatek and Gauff, and I'd also throw Svitolina and perhaps Kostyuk into the mix. But you never know with the WTA.

Hoping we'll see some good matches over the next fortnight.

Yep, focusing more on the prospect of some great match ups in the mens, and less on the fact that sinner willl probably be the winner - I do love a gritty five setter!!

Wawrinka (41) has played his final match at Roland Garros.

As has Monfils (39), gone in 5.

Watched the Djokovic match the other and he was off it in the first set but once he got the read on the serve it didn't look in doubt. In saying that I just cant see him beating Sinner and his level will need to go up a few notches even to make it that far. I think Zverev is in Djokovic half of the draw but at the moment cant see anyone beating Sinner.

The women's is more interesting as someone said above you have the top4 in Sabalenka, Rybakina, Swaitek and Gauff and then just behind those is Svitolina and even then you could have someone further down going on a run. Hard to pick a winner there and after my Italian open predictions I think I will just say I hope Rybakina wins.

Norrie gone with an injured rib.

Hope he can get himself sorted for grass/Wimbledon.

Naomi Osaka getting even more weird and wacky with her court entrance and outfit - she has some guts, I'll grant her that - she'll look proper foolish if she loses after that!

I thought they'd done away with line judges everywhere these days, even the French? (i know they were the last holdouts, but i thought even they'd been dragged along). Nice to see them again!!

    Medvedev out in 5 sets....

    Osaka won at least.

A lot of GB players struggling with injuries at the minute Draper, Raducanu, Norrie, Kartal...even Fearnley (who is due on court soon) is struggling with a rib problem this season.

    Second seed Rybakina gone...yikes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,625 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Djokovic gone to a needless 4th set. He should have finished this in 3.

Rybakina gone, it really is hard to predict the women's

Paolini now in trouble, seems to have some sort of ankle injury - even if she did manage to drag this match back to a win from 5-2 down in the 3rd set, she might struggle to play on anyhow.

    ..... and she's gone 😢

Zverev destroying Machac. Thought Machac would have given him a game but Zverev is just too good. Machac has had the trainer out for a blister or something on the foot, I'd say a retirement is on the cards.

Can see Machac retiring at the end of this set

Surprised to see Machac play the 3rd. I wonder if the organisers asked him to finish it out because it was the evening session. Zverev to serve it out now.

    41 and 39 wow.

Its not that long ago that 30 was retirement age.

Tour is probably easier now with international travel and in reality Wawrinka has been retired for over 5 years hes only been plsying for fun for the last while probably as he had nothing better to do

Kind of wish they would increase the prize money in doubles and mixed so instead of the likes of wawrinka getting first week exits for 5 years they see it as worth while to wind down their careers actually competing to win doubles tournaments , think it would generate more interest for doubles if more top players wound down their careers that way.

Not shaping up to be a good day for the Cerundolo family.

Sinner now gone off for medical timeout mid-game…… I've never seen that before!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,043 ✭✭✭✭josip

According to the interwebs he was allowed a physio exam mid-game but not a time-out.

He's been broken in his last 2 service games in this set. Something's not right.

If he lasts beyond this set I'll be amazed, this is like warm up rallies now.

But then he can take another break at the end of the set, so....

UUnfortunately I have to go out now 😭

Certainly gone now, 2 service breaks down in the 5th and he saved 4 break points in that last game but to no avail.

Sinner was suffering from cramp and nausea.

Was 5-1 up in the third and only won 2 more games.

Djokovic a good bet at 11-1.

Oh this opens the door for Zverev now. If he is going to win a slam this as good as a chance he will get with both Sinner and Alcaraz not there. Yes Djokovic is dangerous but I think Zverev has too much for him now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,043 ✭✭✭✭josip

Agree, we need someone to take Zverev out.

I also need to get started on my retraction to the Cerundolo family 🙂

2 slams in a row where Sinner has been unable to deal with heat come the 3rd set. It will give hope to anyone playing him in 3 of the 4 slams to hang on in the hope he'll hit the wall. And will have him always wondering if it will happen again. That will affect his game.

He was 11-1 when Sinner was in it. He's now 7/2

    Zverev is 15/8

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,616 ✭✭✭dublin49

Sinner shipping criticism for gaming the rules to the nth degree around injury timeouts, commentator saying the umpire overstepped the mark in favour of Sinner, for a guy with a doping offence he doesnt seem to mind what fans think, aptly named it wud appear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,043 ✭✭✭✭josip

Not an unreasonable viewpoint but I think fair play to Sinner for playing the match out when he got zonked. He would have known once he lost the 3rd that he was going to get beaten.

Unless it's happened to you, it's hard to appreciate how it feels when it hits. You're going fine and then suddenly there's nothing. No strength, no energy. All you want is for the end to hurry up so that you can get out of there.

Bye Sinner. The career drugs slam will have to wait for another year.

Hoping we can have a surprise winner now, and someone that's not Djoko or Zverev.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,594 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

Strange he didnt elect to play in the night session, it seems he had a choice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,944 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

Great that Sinner is gone, nice open tournament now.

The Red Hair and Pale Skin coming back to haunt him.

Tsitsipas comes from a break down to level his match at 1-1. I just threw a tenner on him to win the whole thing at 60/1 for the laugh, there's not very much on that side of the draw so you're gonna likely end up with one random finalist and he's got there before so you never know.
