Is just the generation today man, ready a study on it recently where kids are so reliant on those 30 sec videos that they constantly need a feed of any kind of data. A great tip was that next time you're in a queue for something. Leave the phone on the pocket and just take in the environment, leave your mind take in natural data instead. Easier said than done but i always try and think to do it instead of doom scrolling.

Yeah it's annoying that there was no definitive edition until now but it wasn't exactly a massive downgrade. Still, shouldn't have been such a lazy port to PC and console.

Price increase on Steam Decks. €779 and €919 respectively here. Absolute robbery considering you can get an Ally for €600.

Yeah the 512GB was €549 and the 1TB was €679 iirc.

Valve looking worse than Sony/MS/Nintendo is not something I expected to ever see. They all increased their prices, but jesus... ~€240 increase on the 1TB. I suppose they're new to this, they need to learn how to increase it gradually, like everyone else.

That's a wild price increase. The deck is a great bit of kit but no way it's worth that money.

Really makes the portal the best handheld on the market now at €220.

Christ that's some hike, I love mine but they've lost the run of themselves.

A Portal is completely useless in many of the circumstances actual portable consoles are used for, and requires extra hardware or at very least a subscription and good stable internet connection. A handy option in specific circumstances but a world away from a Switch 2 or Steam Deck in terms of versatility and even basic hardware specs.

The Steam Deck increases are totally wild though - that’s an extraordinary jump. Just absolutely unsustainable prices in hardware at the moment - huge swathes of the audience are going to be priced out if this doesn’t let up at some stage. The only positive is it potentially means increased longevity for hardware before they’re replaced, which we were arguably already hitting anyway given the pace of hardware improvements. But even existing hardware is becoming less and less affordable.

**** the AI industry and its bleak consequences - making the world an unambiguously worse place in all manner of ways.

    You don't actually.

PS Plus Premium and a Portal is all you need.

Now it doesn't have the full suite of games but the list is large and is growing so you could theoretically do it without the PS5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,040 ✭✭✭McFly85

Just sounds like I’m done with new hardware for the foreseeable future, the PS5, Switch 2 and Deck will have to do for me.

I have no interest indulging any of these companies at these price points. Get to a point where your hardware is around €500 and I’ll consider it, whatever year that may be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,573 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Not anymore, they actually updated it a while back to be a cloud machine. You can stream games you own direct from the cloud, that list is in the thousands now, and if you sub to premium you get a few hundred games included. Decent mix of big PS5 games , indie games, retro ones too.

Spiderman 1&2, resident evil 1,2 g3 and 8, skate story, blue prince, red dead, still wakes the deep, last of us 1&2, cyberpunk, rachet and clank, death stranding. Etc.

The fact it needs a strong Internet connection switch /steam deck blow it out of the water and are way more due to actually being portable handhelds. That and the steam deck can stream xbox, ps5 and steam games as well.

The portal is a sleek device but that limitation has it overpriced even at 220 for me.

The value proposition of a Steam Deck has changed overnight, there is absolutely no doubt about that. An easy recommendation (perhaps the single best option for anyone hoping to get a start with PC gaming) has become a very tough one due to the absurd price hike.

But the Portal is an accessory. A convenient one if you have a PS5, entirely play handhelds in the comfort of your own home, and if you regularly need an additional screen. But for most people, an actual handheld console - even an OG Switch - will be a substantially more useful device, and I for one would immediately dismiss the prospect of it as a standalone device unless you really, really just want to stream PlayStation 5 games off a TV.

I've a Portal and Steamdeck and although the value of the Portal has now comparatively increased and it can be used independently of your PS5 being on with the cloud streaming, I still wouldn't recommend it as a purely standalone handheld.

We can blame Valve for the massive price hike but I honestly think this isn't their fault. Prices of components have risen to ridiculous levels but you also have to take into account the volume of sales of the steam deck. It's sold between 4-6 million so they don't have the volume of sales that Sony or Nintendo do so won't get as deep a discount on components.

I think there’s a real limit to how much any of these hardware companies can absorb, regardless of the scale. It’s happening across the board, and if there are handheld PCs that haven’t hiked the price I’m sure that’s coming soon too if Valve have had to do this. I’m sure there’s some degree of refusing to sacrifice profit margins, sure, so some blame is justified. But based on all past precedence I’m sure the console manufacturers would rather sell more consoles at a lower price than constantly raise them.

The real corporations to blame here are the AI, tech and big data companies buying up vast amounts of manufacturing capacity and computer hardware bandwidth. Again, it’s a case of the ultra wealthy being able to horde resources while the average person pays the price.

Really puts a question mark over the steam machine as well, along with the PS6 and Xbox Helix. Must be galling to make a spec plan years in advance, only to see the AI demand make a mockery of the prices you expected.

Sony and Nintendo are probably the companies best able to weather it, they've got the power to order enough to properly haggle on prices, but MS and Steam are going to get screwed over.

At launch, that was certainly the case. It was sold as an accessory to the PS5. I actually couldn't get my head around the concept when it was announced, as I thought, like most, what about when you are on a plane or away from home?

But my financially crippling addiction to buying hardware meant I did, of course, pick one up. And despite the limitation of only being able to stream from the console, it quickly became my favourite out of all the handhelds. In the house now, I have a Portal, a Switch, a Switch Lite, an LCD Deck, an OLED Deck, a Switch 2, and I even have that weird yellow thing with the crank. So it's not coming from a place where I don't have access to the others, but it still wins 9 times out of ten.

The Portal is just such a lovely way to game. It's really light and comfortable to hold, and the controls are easy to reach. The screen is nice and big, and the games look great, plus the battery life is fantastic.

But once they added cloud streaming, it really went up a notch. Then they added the ability to stream the games you own too, which means I've hundred of games from PS1, 2, 3, 4 and PS5 all playable. I actually rarely stream from the console anymore, as the recent updates have made the cloud as good, if not better, especially if you are away from home.

But the big plus is I can now play completely independently from the console, which makes it great for co-op games. My son will play on the PS5 on his account, and I'll use the Portal. We play tons of Arc Raiders like that, and it's great fun.

Subnautica 2 devs look to be earning that disputed bonus that was the cause of all those legal shenanigans.

"Reportedly agreed", when in actual fact, it's "forced to pay what was agreed in a legally binding contract".

Agree across the board on this. It's such a wonderful portable device and kudos to Sony for making something so sleek, comfortable and appealing for a handheld. The screen is fantastic and yet it never feels cumbersome and the ability to stream so many games is fantastic.

For me the only downside is requiring Wi-Fi but that is only a problem for a couple of situations every few months.

    Love it.

I'm still using my DS, 3DS, Vita and Analogue Pocket to play handheld games. No arsing about with online nonsense, they just work on the go and have good battery life. The games are also conductive to handheld play, I find a lot of modern games really aren't, although plenty of indies are.

I've enough games across those systems to keep me playing for multiple lifetimes.

I wouldn't even consider the switch. It's more a "portable" than a handheld to me. It.much too big and the battery life is shockingly poor.

Speaking of online nonsense, Epic Games has decided to delist Horizon Chase Turbo starting June 1st.

Particularly bizarre and pointless as there aren't licensed cars or any persistent online elements.

Persona 6 launching September 2027 apparently.

I absolutely love the Portal, got it just before the price hike off adverts.
