very impressive temp at Valentia ! 29 degrees at 1pm, wonder could they break the record again from yesterday

Thunderstorm warning issued for the S and SW for 2 hrs, beginning now. Downpours and hail damage expected.

Big juicy clump of cells about to make landfall all along the Cork coast. I would expect some flash flooding from inundated drains in the city.

Its all time highest for any month is 29.8C in August 1955 by the way.

So make of that what you will how remarkable this is.

I’m seeing purple on the Netweather radar (purple rain!) for the first time ever which means intensity of 200mm per hour, take care in Cork,

Apt that thunderstorms are on their way to Cork. Same date as notable storms there in 2018 (before we went into a cracking summer).

Looks like a fantastic end to the heatspell in Cork (for a weather nut), hope not any damage or flooding. Another blob over Wales may make landfall later in Wexford and South Wicklow. Exciting for some

Lots of rumbling, a few flashes and some spits of rain in cork harbour.

going off topic here but 1955 has to be my favourite weather year, Feb 1955 severe and snowy followed by a summer as good if not better than 1976 and 1995 and then another cold and snowy Feb in 1956. That was the year Ireland had a continental climate.

I've been in Dublin for over 10 years and I still just cannot get over the sheer 'chill' (relative to how the strong sun on a calm day feels) that the stern Easterly breeze brings on a good day.

Sweet relief for those who prefer heat to be at the lower end, but for me…brrr. Give me Sunday and 25c back. Dublin airport down the road is only reading 18c at 2pm, and this heat lover certainly has felt it.

Of course, the glorious blue skies remain. Looks like we will get a few degrees back tomorrow and could even get close to 25c again in Dublin, very much looking forward to that.

Great little spell, has really whet the appetite for the entire summer which remains!

That station is right on the North coast though. It’s almost on a mini peninsula I think so it’s almost surrounded by the cool sea. It wouldn’t really be representative of temps in the wider area. If you went even just 200 or 300 metres inland yesterday the temperature was probably a few degrees higher.

That’s not to say it’s a badly located station like Shannon for example. In fact, it’s well away from any man-made buildings and concrete so it’s great for comparing historical records.

But anytime there’s a stiff North sea breeze on a warm day, temperatures there will struggle to get past the maximum temperature of the sea which is around 13° in late May and 15° or 16° in summer.

Yes..I was in Leitrim yesterday and was melting but on arrival back to Dublin it felt almost chilly in my tshirt and shorts today. I couldn't tolerate a beach in only 18C and a stiff sea breeze so will hold off til it exceeds 20C later in week if forecasts are accurate...

Yes, I too left the house today in shorts and a t-shirt only and any exposure to the breeze was unpleasant. But, despite my life on this island my body yearns for big heat so I know it's different for everyone, before I offend anyone who thinks it's roasting! 😁

But it's all swings and roundabouts. We can look on during the hot spells of the more intense heat further inland, but in the Westerly dominated weather patterns that frequent us in Summer, we can still get some decent sun and temps of 18-22c in Dublin while the western half of the country really struggles in the mid-teens. So it's easier to take the sea breeze on the chin knowing generally we will do so much better across the entire summer here on the East coast.

18° and wall to wall sunshine still isn’t bad for Dublin in May. But I get your point.

As has been mentioned, ironically, Dublin’s warmest weather of this spell could be tomorrow or Friday while the rest of the country sees a breakdown and a return to more normal temperatures.

29.5C at my site, C'mon Ardfert!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,590 ✭✭✭Elmer Blooker

this cold wind on the east coast happens without fail every year between April and June, I’ve never seen it NOT happen in any year as easterlies are so common in spring.

I wasn't talking about the 19th century, I was talking about the increase in average temperatures since the 1990's, which in turn were increased from the previous 30-year period.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 983 ✭✭✭midlander12

It was still 25C here (Longford) at about 20.00. It gradually came down to 23C over the subsequent hour.

Today doesn't feel quite as hot because there's a strong breeze. Still v hot though.

I’m with you. I love the high temperatures it’s so rare we get them in Dublin and it’s only a day here or there. Give me 40c and wall to wall sunshine and gin blue skies 365 days a year.
