a meteorological milestone! the first ‘official’ 30c ever outside June July and August and astonishingly a full month before the earliest 30c ever recorded as Sryan pointed out.

Yes — and March rainfall was only about 10% above average in the capital.

January and February were very, very wet in Dublin (but even December had below average rainfall too).

It shows that these weather patterns almost always even out over the course of a few months.

I remember when people were complaining about the deluges in January. I said it's one month of the year when I couldn't care less what the weather does — let it rain and be out of the way in winter and be nice in late spring spring and summer…

Just saw this reported......THE RECORD HIGH temperature for the month of May in Ireland has been provisionally broken once again, with Met Éireann recording 30.7C at its Clonmel climate station in Co Tipperary.

Just did a post on dates of temp thresholds in the stats thread if you're interested. I seen you query about the earliest 30C which inspired it.

It's still hard for me to grasp how it got so hot so quickly. A sitting high with a bit of a continental flow. It doesn't look that out of the ordinary.

In June 1995 it took almost a week of high pressure to build temperatures to 30C.

Agree very odd, came out of nowhere.

I don't ever remember that happening before. Models did well though in predicting it

May v September for heat and records is interesting. September has the heat lag and warmer seas. However, the sun rises at 6.40 and sets at 20.15 around 1st September. A day length of 13hrs and 35min.

Today, 26th May, the sun rises at 5.15 and sets at 21.37. A day length of 16hrs 22min.

    2hrs 37min longer.

No internet and lack of ACS’s did not help

But regardless 1995 and 1975 and indeed 2018 were more notable for longevity that our current 3 to 4 day wonder

What’s remarkable about today is its May but then we did not have the proliferation of recording equipment for temperature in previous decades as we do now

That is utter nonsense. It's not even mostly about occasional records like today, though they are symptoms and will become more frequent as time goes on. It's about average temperatures, including night ones. Feb, March and April this year were all between 0.6C and 1.1C above the average for those months for the 1991-2020 period, when we had plenty of weather stations. 10 out of 12 months last year were over 1C above the same averages. That's a massive change, in a very short time. In 2023, it was 9 months out of 12.

We started out with a 28.4C May record. We look like we'll beat that by 1.5 to 2C, at long standing stations. That's fair going I can't recall any month's max or min being broken by that much.

April's 25.9C last year was an increase of 0.4 or 0.5C iirc from 1984.

Drivetime just announced that Gerry Murphy just rang across from ME to say 30.5 at Shannon.

Provisional is max of 30.5c at Shannon AP.

And, it's reporting 31c at 1730 (on XC Weather).

who's to say that temperatures taken in the past werent too high? Our record of 33.3c seems a bit dodgy to me. Earliest in the year 26th June 1887 before today to reach 30c and it broke it by 3 3c.

4 great days in a row in Cork. Hopefully it lasts a bit longer. Feel physically much better in it. Sat out as often as I could in it, even at work, and its glorious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,908 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Cork should be included in this heat warning. Readily 28/29 throughout the city and county!! Why not just up a Nationwide one and cut out this nonsense of county ones, particularly for this event

I presume Cork beat it's all time record today, anyone??? For all of Summer not just May

Tomorrow's will have rain but I've had plenty of dry thunderstorms here in Ireland rare but they do happen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭Billcarson

No thanks but it will be beaten at some stage.

I had a long 3 and a half hour drive today. Countryside looking great in the sun.

I was so grateful I got the air con in the car fixed last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,098 ✭✭✭Slashermcguirk

31 degrees at Shannon at 6pm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,213 ✭✭✭Robwindstorm

As Dazler said, not always. The best thunderstorm since 1986 occurred in my area of Meath on the night of August 14th 2022. Lots of tropical type gusty winds with lightening every 3 seconds and not a drop of rain.

The temperature record been broken again is phenomenal. A couple of decades back (outside of 1995) and 25C seemed the magic hot number. Now 30C is the new magic number.

It was 27 degree's in meath today will it be cooler tomorrow does anyone know?
