Halfords - Battery warranty claim

I have a two yr old battery which is not holding a charge. I went back to the Halfords shop I bought it in. However they have no battery testing machine the past few months so could not test it. They suggested I go to another of their stores, to which I said no as I am here now and I am not driving 20 or 30km another store. They suggested going to a garage/mechanic and get a battery test report (assume a cost for that) and they will honour that if it shows a battery fault. Again, I said no, I have come to your store for a warranty test and it's on Halfords to be able to test the battery or supply a new one.

I asked for the manager, however, there was no manager there. They promised me the manage would call me back and still no call back.

What are my rights here? The battery has a 5 yr warranty but has been struggling to start the car for over 6 months now. The previous battery was the same make and it lasted 6/7 years.

Your contract is with the seller so it's up to them to see is your warranty claim valid or not. Don't be fobbed off.

Is there any issue with your warranty paperwork?

p.s. Could you borrow a battery charger and see does the battery take a charge? If it does it points to a failing alternator.

A bad battery will take a charge and indicate full charge if left charged. It’s a battery tester he needs.

I have a battery booster but I don't want to have to, and should not need to, be dealing with a flat battery.

I have my purchase receipt and guarantee receipt which were photographed in store when I went there for a battery test. However, the store cant test it. All logic says that's their problem, but they have made it my problem to resolve. I am not happy about that

How do I force the matter with the store. The manager has not called me back and there is no way to call the store directly.

How long have you been waiting on halfords to get back to you?

If nothing happens after a week, go to the small claims court.

Might not be worth it for such a small amount. The €25 application fee can't be claimed for and it takes over a year to get a court date. I'm sure Halfords would settle before then if it came to it, but it still takes a very long time to get to that stage.

Can you go over the local manager's head and escalate the matter to head office.

Asking you to go to a third party for testing who most likely are in the business of selling batteries too is just ridiculous.

Reminded me that I have not kept a receipt for the last battery I purchased, but I never had issues with batteries in my own cars.
Halfords should be reasonable with warranty at least with bicycles they were when I had issues. Maybe talk to the manager, this sounds very unprofessional having to go test batteries elsewhere.

Get in touch with their head office and escalate your complaint.

Tell them exactly what you told us here.

Have you actually checked with a multimeter that its actually being charged with the engine idling??.

Most motor factors should be able to check condition of battery as i had it in the boot and unsure if you get the same reading if recently driven or removed from second car. They do a till receipt print out.

I do t have a multimeter. I would assume it is as it's been in the car two years now.

The issue not being able to process a warranty claim because their battery testing equipment is broken for the past few months. The staff said they have requested a new one but have not got one yet.

The more I deal with retail staff in this day and age, the more I despair… Staff clueless as to correct policy. Managers absent or just hiding away from their responsibilities. Funnily enough I had a run in with 2 'thickos' in Halford's myself recently… who wanted to charge me the 'scanned' price, when the item was clearly advertised (SEL) on the shelf at a lower cost.

I quoted him some of the law around the sale of goods and supply of services and made him do a refund, and override the price and charge me the advertised price. I see it ALL the time. Yesterday in screwfix, I was handed 3 of the 5 items I'd paid for… utter incompetence (Luckily I'm one of THOSE people who checks everything). Last Sunday I was under-charged in a restaurant as 2 separate girls took the drinks order VS food order. Did I correct them, did I fook.

Had I been in your shoes - I'd have loaded a fresh battery into my boot and left them the faulty original and a COPY of the receipt and just let them deal with it. That's not bravado, a flex, or BS. I'd literally have left them to it.

Testing equipment out of order? Not. My. Problem.

i'd argue it's simple. if they don't have the means to test it (a service they offer, albeit 20 or 30km away), let them fit a loan battery into your car while they send the presumably faulty one off for a test.

it's their problem they don't have the means to investigate a warranty issue.

    Thickos who were correct?

A mis-price does not have to be honored, you say you quoted SOGA, how about the bit where a price label is an invitation to treat and not a binding contract?

I actually did that before. It was a 980e item from a DIY store, independent one, Id explained what I needed, paid before the item landed as shop in a hurry close for lunch. Landed out to my car and wrong one given going on the picture. Front door locked, went around and didn't I find a door opened and shouted hello, found the staffroom, explained wrong one and told to leave and wait till lunch hour over. Left the item and my number, said ring me n do a chargeback which they did that evening.

As for Halfords I just wouldn't leave, most of the staff are just untrained kids in my one outside an older man who is very good.

You're wasting your time with that clown.

Mind me asking what law you quoted the staff in Halfords? According to the Citizens Information website they were correct, you must be informed of the correct price before you pay which is what they did.

You realise that none of his story actually happened?

Firstly you may need to charge the suspect battery before it can be tested. Then it needs to be tested on a proper battery tester. If tester says it is ok then you will not get a refund even if you know its bad.

As suggested I would go in with bad battery and take a good battery off the shelf. Go to the till and explain the situation and take the new battery. Ask the manager to ring the guards or leave your contact details. They can do whatever testing the like whenever they like or they can try bring you to the small claim courts. This is not your problem.

The previous battery lasted 6/7 years, but the alternator, for whatever reason, may not now be charging at the proper voltage but still will supply all electrical loads at this lower voltage, I have seen this a number of times, also the parasitic loss can/should also be checked, I'm a bit surprised that the battery supplier doesn't also require the vehicle for these tests (especially the charging voltage) even if a new battery has been installed. Having said all that though there were 3 cars in my family, from new, all "lasted" 22 years, the 3 had only one replacement battery purely precautionery as the cars were passed down the line after 10/12 years.

    Seriously? 😂

How about he just gets a nice sawn-off and takes whatever he wants from whatever shop he desires?
