Is the 2026 version of the munster hurling championship one of the worst if not the worst that we've seen..?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 143 ✭✭5948ai

Two terrible games today. Waterford fan here so I've never been much of a fan of the format. Overall format of Munster and Leinster needs to change and possibly merged into two groups to make the most of the small hurling base we have in the country. The GAA probably slow to make any changes due to large attendances from mainly Limerick and Cork swelling the coffers over the last few years. Provincial councils obviously wouldn't want any dilution of power too.

Definitely not a vintage Munster championship by Round Robin standards.

Leinster on the other hand was intriguing with a number of unforseen results. You would have had very long odds on the cats being eliminated.

Jesus our lads will be lucky to have any fingers left for the Munster final with the chopping going on by Clare. Always a dirty edge to them.

They're awful today.....2 hiding so far and counting

I think the entire hurling championship has been one of the worst we've seen.

    Munster games very dull.

Some entertaining games in Leinster but quality level is significantly worse than recent years.

I agree, woeful to watch. As a game I've been saying that the weight and reduced rims on the sliotar has to be looked at in hurling. Sick of looking at some of these 30 points plus matches. They can be mind numbing. If I was at Cork V Clare today I'd be looking for my money back!

I can understand the sliotar being light for safety. But the rims could surely be beefed up to alter the aerodynamics and stop the ball flying so far?

    A very poor Munster championship

They need to do something. It's becoming a joke at this stage.

It would be a great idea two groups seeded and mixed based on league and championship performance. But the problem is there is too much mystic about Munster hurling so that is unlikely to happen.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Just skip to All Ireland final and leave Limerick and Cork at it.

Will be guaranteed Munster All Ireland football and hurling championships this year. Kerry hmhave football despite yesterday loss. Roll on club championship.

And yet we have the people who couldn't even beat them crying about being eliminated.

This will be the 2 most obvious Munster finalists in a long time. They are just ways way ahead of the pack.

They are overly physical and unable to put back to back performances together as a result.

A tight close lower standard game is far better to watch a procession of one elite team over another under performing elite team. Cork learnt nothing today. It will be revenge mission for Limerick in 2 weeks time. It would be sweet to deny them at home.

Agree, same argument for Ulster Football, change will come very slow.

Oh of course, but when you mix the fact that the Munster Championship has been dull and Leinster Championship has been of a lower standard, mixing it together makes for sh*te overall.

In a way beating Dublin today would've just been a case of merely papering over the cracks for Kilkenny. At least now there's nowhere to hide. People won't be able to ignore the elephants in the room any longer.

Counties go through their peaks and troughs and Kilkenny sure are in a trough right now. Although the main story this evening is Offaly's continued recovery as a hurling power by making it out of Leinster at the expense of the Cats.

Hopefully they'll ruffle a few feathers in Croke Park with the exception of Cork's i suppose.😄 Hurling really does need Offaly, Dublin and Galway to put it up to the Munster teams in Croke Park now.

It's important that it was Offaly to put Kilkenny out.

Offaly are the product of careful planning and a long term project. Something Kilkenny don't seem to have and badly need.

it only took them 28 years to re-build though and not sure they are anyway near challenging for a trophy just yet..🤷

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,833 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Not winning an All Ireland in 28 years is not the same as being shte for that long. But I agree it took them way too long to see the warning signs. The sooner it comes the better so Kilkenny really need to see them now or they will be waiting 20+ years like Cork or even worse.

The 80/90s were a bit of an aberration for a county like Offaly. Where they are now is a perfectly respectable position for a county of their resources.

I can see Kilkenny going down the wrong route here and appointing Shefflin, who'll drag them further away from the direction they should be going. Playing a style that doesnt work anymore wasted 3 years in Galway and the KK u20s were doing the same the other night.

The clubs probably start to need to adopt it too or they won't get the quality for the IC teams

Glorious day indeed, but nothing more than a training game in reality.

Limerick did indeed hammer Tip - they've been brutal this year. Awful defence of a title.

Dublin did indeed beat Kilkenny, never would have had a better chance in fairness.

Cork v Limerick Munster final in 2 weeks and you'd get short odds of the All Ireland Final being any different I'd say.

The loser of the Munster final will play Offaly. Could be worse. No disrespect to Offaly.

Two four team groups and if needs be call them the Munster and Leinster conferences - play home and away. Top two qualify - 1 from Munster Conference v 2 from Leinster Conference. So potential 8 games to win All Ireland which is the same as Leinster runners up and third placed team at the moment. Bottom two teams to play off for relegation. Have same eight team set-up at each level below with promotion/relegation of one team to/from each level.

Let the provincial councils own each conference if they're that worked up about cash. All things being equal, I'd guess that the eight teams, before this season started, would probably have expected to be the five Munster plus Kilkenny, Galway and Dublin. I could see crowds still being very much drawn to four team home and away conferences of say:

    Kilkenny; Limerick; Clare; Dublin

    Cork; Galway; Waterford; Tipperary

Probably expect Limerck and Dublin to come out of one and Cork and Galway to come out of the other. And Kilkenny and Tipperary to now be facing a relegation play-off.....!
