Ioane and him are the overall best duo average at 10 in Ireland next season (kick to post aside, Gilbert will kick).

    Same for Prenderast/Hurley-Langton/Boyle/Jansen backrow

1st row of VanWyk/Bohan/Tierney/Heff/Illo/Bealham not far either

2nd row too thin in all account (for now)

Centre yet to be found out depends on how at least 2 of Forde/Ralston/Gavin/J.Devine climb a new step.

Hansen/Bolton/Gilbert are magnificent, slightly light behind them

    SH ok even without M.Devine

I'd sign 1 last big ball carrier at 4 and we're good to go for decent Champions cup games

Connacht won't need Ioane coming season because there is Frawley and Naughton. So if possible they should put him to loan and hire 'big ball-career. About M. Devine, do you think who can (electrical and agile) Matthew in the opponent side? And where is Treacy and Jennings?

    Stlll don't know if he's 13 or 15 long-term :D

Jennings is great squad material not strater, Treacy, we have to see his defensive workrate…

All attention to next Friday, really looking forward it with quite confidence. Reckon a 50:50 game with connacht's form and glasgow's home advantage.

Oh no. Glasgow beat Bulls. Glasgow beat Ulster away.

Glasgow are indeed the easiest of the 4 we could have away from home (Bulls, Leinster Stormers) butit's certainly not a 50/50

We have to enjoy our rugby, no pressure

Tough ask going to Glasgow but we are in bonus territory for this season, nothing to lose and no pressure on us.

Bohan, Heffernan, Illo, Murphy, Murray, prendergast, SHL, Jansen, Murphy, Ioane, Bolton, Aki, West, Jennings, Gilbert.

Victory, Dooley, Bealham, Joyce, Boyle, Devine, Naughton, Devine

I think Josh Murphy has to start with the way he's played the last couple of weeks.

    Is West injured?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,044 ✭✭✭connachta

No I just think Forde/Gavin is our centre pairing for Champions Cup and any big game, with Aki/West as luxury back-ups

Treacy is fit, too? What about DTM?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Forde and Treacy have been confirmed as out for the rest of the season. DTM and West are likely major question marks, along with Buckley and Murray. We should get an injury update tomorrow.

Gavin is too important with his power to be omitted again IMO

Out of interest IF Connacht beat Glasgow do they get a home semi

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

    No

Bulls, Munster or Glasgow will have the home SF.

Connacht win, they are away to bulls or munster as they are higher seed

Forde, Treacy and Buckley are out for the season. Gavin on form dosen't deserve to start. He may well do if West is injured though

I think that the last few months have taught us to approach any figure that comes out of Munster with skepticism.

That's no clanger from Cullen, it's the PR professional in him in throwing out some red meat. Similar to whenever he's in contract negotiations and a well-timed advertorial appears in the broadsheets about him selling his house.

Anyway, that's enough of the dysfunctional neighbours and onto more pressing matters…second half of the season, we're doing a title charge.

I'm more excited about this game on Friday, than I have been about a Connacht match in a long time.

Wouldn't read much into our match back in February with Glasgow, as they had a lot of players missing for the 6 Nations

Very interested in seeing how resilient our defence is.

We've been amazing in that area for months now, but Glasgow have had 2 weeks to make adjustments.

I'd imagine that there will be a decent crowd over there from Connacht. Hopefully it helps

I thought that in the February game we deployed a very clever defensive game plan, that we had developed especially for that game, aided by the fact that we had four weeks to prepare.

We ensured that all of our defenders were in front of the ball at all times, i.e. we did not make any aggressive reads and attempt to make big tackles in the second line of attack like a Leinster would do. By not making any big decisions, this forced Glasgow to play in front of a full defensive line all game. They weren't really able to adapt to this new look we threw at them, and we kept them scoreless until Joyce got a yellow and they exploited the extra space out wide. It was very similar to how Italy defended against Ireland in the 6N, from what I remember.

The important thing is that while this approach is passive in terms of not trying to swim in behind the attacking line to make big shots, it was allayed with incredible physicality in the tackle.

Glasgow are a good team, and I expect them to have a plan if we do the same again, e.g. attacking the blindside, playing off 9 more, kicking more.

This post from the URC Twitter really show just how much we turned the season around

Yeah, regardless of what happens on Friday, the run we went on to get into the top 8 was incredible, especially given that it seemed like other results went against us most weeks. The turnaround in our defense is bordering on miraculous. Really hope we get a bit of luck with injuries now - we could do with Harry West being available, and Darragh Murray would be a bonus.

The Connacht management team have released the latest squad update ahead of Friday’s BKT United Rugby Championship quarter-final against Glasgow Warriors.

In good news Caolin Blade, Dylan Tierney-Martin and Finn Treacy have all returned to full training following recent injuries.

Dave Heffernan (calf), Darragh Murray (ribs), Sean Jansen (knee) and Harry West (hamstring) will be further assessed, with a decision on their availability later in the week.

Remaining unavailable are Denis Buckley, Temi Lasisi, Matthew Victory, Oisin Dowling, Oisin McCormack, Cathal Forde, Byron Ralston and Mack Hansen.

Dear heavens ShineyShiney. Bar the obvious problem that West is out for the rest of the year so John Devine will slide in nicely at 13 this is exactly the team I would pick to start and to finish. The question is who do you pick at utility back for the bench. And as today we don't have one on our books at the moment that is not injured. So I see only two options. We go for a 6-2 split or Jack is on the bench.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

Betting odds of 50/1 winning the URC is too good to turn down based on current form.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,988 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

I cant see West making it. If he doesnt is it J Devine or Gavin at 13?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

And then to the issue of Connacht players representing Ireland. I suspect in the larger squad we will have Bohan. Prendergast and Aki. Of course Joe Schmidt did make changes for the SA tour when Connacht beat Leinster in the PRO12 final. And as with Schmidt I can't see Farrell changeing anything unless he is forced to do so by public opinion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

So we have cover for Aki, cover for Prendergast but I wonder about Bohan. And I forget Darragh Murray and we really are short in the second row

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭RonnieL

Tough call. I don't think I've seen enough of Devine, but I do feel Gavin is too error prone. Are those the only two options? They'd hardly put Sam Gilbert in there from the start, with Sean Naughton at full back? Has Shane Jennings ever played centre? Finn Treacy seemingly back available for selection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

Devine into 13 for me and then probably a toss up between Gavin or Tracey for 23. I fully expect that Lancaster will go with both Naughton and Carty but I didn't like it.

Thats so untrue. Granted you did say you hadn't watched John Devine so I will let that slide. Devine, to me, has been the best outside centre at Connacht this year. That accolade is not given easily when you consider how good Harry West was
