Yet again, cavan find a way to lose.

that’s the biggest sickener of them all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭mylestheslasher

Here's one for you. No cavan player bar the goalie touched the ball for last 10 mins. Just keep booting the ball up the middle from kick outs back to Tyrone. Brutal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,782 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Careful now. I got lambasted on here last year when I said we needed to look at the psychology of teams after the minors went from I think it was 7 points up to losing to Donegal.

Today is an even worse sickener. We were 11 points up after the 3rd goal. 3-9 to 7. How does that game end 3-10 to 1-18? They outscored us 1-11 to 1 point for what, the last 15 to 20 minutes. I’m not sure of the times.

Countless long kick outs to the middle of the pitch at the end when we couldn’t win one. You’d Leon Gilmartin, for example. who plays midfield for his club in at corner back and not one short kick out to him attempted. And Liam Brady is involved heavily with this team!?

The kickouts were unforgivable surely someone on the line says enough is enough with long ones

Our head of development, or whatever his title is, is Liam Brady - our county goalkeeper - and he is standing along the line watching it happen before his eyes.

A litany of errors. No one wanted the ball. Kicked away a free from 50 yards out with only one Cavan player inside the big D and still I think 8 points up at the time with Tyrone gaining momentum. Summed up the last 10. Should have passed it around for a minute to calm the nerves, not kick it back to them. No one committed to winning dirty ball but plenty all too willing to throw themselves into stupid late tackles with no hope of winning ball.

In saying all that the black card by the referee looked a disgraceful decision to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭mylestheslasher

Was a clear black. Rugby tackled player on way in on goal. 2 yellows for no2 were brainless stuff. We found a way to lose. Mentally so so weak

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 259 ✭✭etuzyuk

Looked more a push to me, definitely not rugby tackle but would need to see replay. Commentator was extremely surprised by it at any rate. Agree on the other brainless tackling, too many at it instead of actually trying to get on the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,782 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

We looked weak tackling even in the first half. Tyrone were able to break through easily at times.

It’s a huge pity for the lads on the pitch. Some of them started out on development squads back in 2023 so this is their 4th year and that is how it ends.

Warning bells were there but if Imade stayed on the pitch we might have actually been able to break a kickout or two and hold on. We totally collapsed after that. I'd need to see replay but not even close to black card for me.

I don’t think it should come back to discussion about that though. You can’t blame referee decisions or take them into account in this. They aren’t worthy of mention IMO.

    15mins 2nd half
    CAVAN : 3-9(18)
    TYRONE : 0-7(7)
CAVAN goal from play 8. Finlay McCaul

With 15 minutes of normal time left, Cavan were 11 points up. The black card was 12 minutes later and we were still 6 points up:

    27mins 2nd half
    CAVAN : 3-10(19)
    TYRONE : 0-13(13)
CAVAN black card 9. Exceedingly Imade

Even after it, you have to be seeing out that game from that position. Get hands on the ball and slow the game down. We just kept gifting the ball back to Tyrone. They even had time to kick a couple of wides that really should have been scores.

Only in Cavan, it's possible you can be 11 points up against Tyrone with 15 to go and go home feeling embarrassed, confused and disgusted..

Been listening to lads talk about the minor development squads for 14 months now and all the 'big' players they had. Like a fool I was actually looking forward to watching them.

Was at the game, playing against a strong breeze in the first half, so sensible play IMO to go in at HT ahead….knock out football. Excellent first 15 of the second half and then fell apart as a result of the red and black cards. Black card killed us because Imade was the only real big man around MF capable of winning kickouts. All the cards were fair but would love to see the tackle on McCrystal again…..looked like he was cleaned out in the air and no card. Ref gave us nothing in the first half, evened it up a bit in the second…..but you cant play a winning machine Tyrone team with men down.

I couldn’t see on the footage, because the ball never stayed down there, but did they try bringing Jake Brady or Jay Graham out around the middle when in trouble? Both are very strong in the air.

Its their opinion and as I said before the lad sitting at the bar sipping pints will know as much as them if he goes to the odd game.

Players have a week to sort themselves out and a shot at redemption in T2 QF. Would be good to bounce back and not end season on such a sour note. Louth formidable opponents though. Beat both Leinster finalists in group stages before narrowly losing to Kildare in semi.

Did you catch the Leinster minor on Friday? Two teams having a proper go with and against the breeze. It was heads-up football for 80+ minutes with one team eventually going out on their shields after penalties. Our boys looked afraid to lose in the first half and afraid to win in the second half. And Tyrone were average, but they eventually figured out that our players were withering.

This isn't me forgiving Cavan on Saturday, absolutely inexcusable to have lost from their position even with the red card and black card, complete meltdown and the line has to hold hands up for not giving instructions in to change up the kick outs to gain possession and mentally having them ready to beat Tyrone. However to say we were afraid to lose in first half is wrong, they were playing into a wind and Tyrone were sitting way off them behind the arc and not putting any pressure out around the middle of the pitch, no issue as underdogs having the game played slow and our terms in that situation, it good game management and for the first 15 minutes of the second half we were completely on top, dominating their kickout and pressing high up and forcing turnovers in their half of the pitch. Would need to see replay to see if our players were out on their feet at end and conditioning came into it, didnt seem that way just a blow up by us but I have no interest in watching the replay of that capitulation, such a shame for the players involved.

Having only 13 players is a huge disadvantage at underage though whether it was deserved or not. Won't be the last underage team to implode. But lads can mature and learn. Season not over yet so shouldn't be too quick to write this group off. Still something to be salvaged from the season and some wrongs can be put right if the weekend is approached in the right mindset.

So someone forgot to pass the script on to Tyrone, and the ref?

Snatching defeat from the hands of victory is nothing new. I just can't figure out the reasons for it but it's either panic, poor tactics when ahead or something mental. The seniors were 7 points up with 5 minutes to go in Cork too. It happens far too often.

From watching the games this weekend McCabe is going to have to have something up his sleeve to avoid a couple of embarrassments here. Westmeath may have played their All Ireland but I am sure McHugh will have them fired up.

Win or lose the second round of games could be fairly bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭mylestheslasher

I am not sure what you mean. Cavan got themselves into an 11 point lead, they managed the 1st half very well against the wind then powered on in the 3rd quarter. Then a collapse on the pitch and on the line. But saying that 1st half tactics cost us the game or were a contributor to the loss is total rubbish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭large_palette

Yes. The tactics were to count on wind advantage in the second half. But the oldest of gaa idioms held true, and they were outscored in the second half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭mylestheslasher

They were outscored because a fella lost the head and got 2 daft yellow cards, the team mentally fell apart all over the pitch, another lad got sent to the line (perhaps harshly) for a pull down and the line also lost the plot and did not intervene. You cannot possibly link what happened in that last quarter with anything that went before that where we were doing excellently against a team who had hammered us already this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 259 ✭✭etuzyuk

Yeah, I thought we were brilliant up to that. Actually thought we were home and hosed. Seems the players thought the same. We just stopped doing things right. Game management from the last score was bad. Kicking away that 50 yard free to no one was crucial. We were outnumbered by 4 or 5 players inside their D, which meant we outnumbered them by 4 or 5 behind the ball. Kicking it back and killing a few minutes recycling would have set the tone for last 10. Unfortunately for whatever reason, mentally our lads were already in the showers celebrating, and when the tide turned and they needed to switch back on, they couldn't.

Well there is a link. Because tactically they set themselves up for a wind assisted smash & grab in the second half, rather than preparing mentally for a 60 minute battle. Tyrone were supposed to wilt in the second half and we were supposed to kick on. But they clearly came prepared to duke it out to the bitter end, which they did. The ill discipline and sideline yips may or may not be down to that misjudgement.
