Fingers crossed but we've been down this road so many times but at least it's no longer Glazernomics.

The single biggest reason for Peps success isn't that he is a genius, it is that it was abundantly clear to all players that he was absolutely in charge and could do whatever he wanted. Same power as Fergie had.

Don't do exactly what he says, you are out. Push back against him, you are out. Drop in standards one little bit and he will have replaced you without a second thought.

There is no rumors to the media, Twitter bullshit, whispering in corners, or coasting along until the manager gets sacked. Pep had full backing and the players knew it, so their only option was do exactly what he says and do it hard.

The point being, does Maresca have that same power? I bloody well doubt it. He doesn't have the track record for that, he will be like 99%of managers in that he will have to prove himself. And for the first time in a decade Man City players like Halaand will be judging the manager and feeling like they have an opinion that matters there.

Will City win next season? Probably, I'd have them as favourites. But it is not a sure thing at all, not by a long shot. Lots of machines break down every now and then.

If it doesn't work with Maresca they'll replace him with a top calibre manager like they do with players, that's how the City machine keeps going.

We went tits up because the machine operators were idiots.

London would have been a big factor too. Arsenal were also a genuinely attractive prospect at the time - Rice bought into what Arteta was selling and in fairness to them, that project has materialised.

You’re comparing that to United where yeah you’ll get massive global attention and become a huge name very quickly, but we’re still not fully out of the woods yet imo. For a lot of elite players hungry for trophies, that alone isn’t enough. They’re also looking at who they genuinely believe will deliver sustained success.

We can’t say that about United - yet. Does that mean it’s impossible for Anderson to choose us over them right now? No. I do think it’s unlikely though.

Every manager United picked could be argued to be a good choice. Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho, lots of people argued the merits for all of them at the time.

Top calibre is meaningless, Mourinho and Van Gall were top calibre, but the line between success and failure is too slim for that.

Man City might find themselves doing a Chelsea and having to replace quite a few managers in the next few years. Will that make them idiots or is that just the way it is in management?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,782 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Moyes was a shite choice and LVG was past it, Mourinho done well but done the usual when he didn't get his way.

City and Chelsea are not run the same, like comparing Apples and Oranges, we're run better than Chelsea!

According to Romano the Ederson talk is coming from his end, prob his agent using us to gain value.

    "Hi there Elliott.

    So you can

A- wait with Forest and probably end up back in the Championship next season.

B- go to City with their impending 130 charges and probably end up in the Championship next season, or

C- come here to the biggest club in the world just as we're heading back to the top and you'll become a legend.

Would you like the number 7 ?"

I'm sorry but C is just delusional at this stage.

Also says United are in Italy talking about multiple players but incoming and out going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,697 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

Thats hindsight. My point was that prior to the appointments plenty of people considered them good choices. I was here, I remember it. Before they arrived there were perfectly good arguments made for all of them.

City can do the same. They can make "good choices" that won't work out. It happens all the time, even to well oiled machines.

City have ruined their fair share of players too; Grealish springs to mind. Foden isn't making the WC squad because TT doesn't know what position he plays. Haaland for all the goals struggles sometimes not being a pure 9. City under Pep wasn't any guarantee of success or development as a player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭scottser

AC Milan are stacked with decent midfielders; Ricci, Foufana and Jashari are all worth a look.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,782 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I was against Moyes from the start he wasn't the right man, LVG I was indifferent but the main thing that failed them was a poorly run club, City are well run and all 3 managers hired by their owners have won the league at least.

atalanta played last night. words from their manager: Atalanta manager Palladino: “Éderson didn’t play today because there’s a concrete negotiations with a top club”.

Delighted that the season isnt over and we already seemingly have 1 if not 2 deals all but done. Massive change from previous years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,782 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I think the Baleba deal is just about done judging from his tweet last week and Whitwells comment.

Although, making incremental improvements to the squad makes sense and we absolutely need strength in depth next season, part of me thinks that if Ineos are really serious about getting this club back to the summit of the PL an allowance in their budget has to be made for players like Anderson.

If ambition is shown by fighting off an oil State to buy the club and then by announcing plans to build a futuristic cathedral of a stadium then ambition is also shown by going all out to buy once in a generational talent.

Anderson is that generational talent. He could be Robson, or Keane. He could be the lynchpin in a United midfield for a decade.

If Arteta can sell perennial 2nd place bottlers to Rice, then surely Carrick can sell Ineos' ambition, the world wide passion for this club, the opportunity to be a revered legend, and to be the captain who brings United back to the top to Anderson.

We should've been outbid for Robson and Keane, but the club knew how important they were. They should be acting the same way now.

If they fail, they fail, but at least show the ambition and the commitment.

But will they turn out to be duds. I don't have confidence in either signing.

I don't think Ederson will be signed, sounds like agent talk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭FrankN1

Agreed, no way I'd sign Baleba anyway. Not shown enough for 20m nevermind 50/60m. Avoid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭NITRO95

Do you honestly believe the club or people working on behalf of the club havnt spoken to Andersons people? Of course they have. And those who would know have been of the belief since late January that Anderson has his heart set on City. No amount of selling the project, selling the club, talking about Robson & Keane will change his mind. He's going to a team that will pay him more than anyone else and that are annual PL and CL challengers, I don't like how City operate but that's just the reality of 2026.

Some people seem desperate to paint Anderson going to City as a failure by INEOS. In reality they've likely done as much as they could but he's made his decision. We are moving on and getting deals done early on Baleba and Ederson, who are already being written off as shite because they aren't Anderson. We aren't going to be playing next season the way we played this season. We had to find a way to accommodate Casemiro and that's what Carrick did. Next season we won't have to accommodate anyone, that's why building the squad is so important.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,672 ✭✭✭fergiesfolly

We don't know if they've spoken to Anderson. If Forrest are quoting £100-120m then they mightn't have bothered trying. Which would be a mistake.

What I want to hear at the end of the transfer window is "we tried our hardest, we matched City's bid and beat their wages but he wanted City", not "Well, we didn't see the value in it and we're getting the next best thing" or some other half arsed, mid table, no-hopers cock and bull line.

I get that they have to balance the books and not run it like a dream factory, but if a multi billion pound club, owned by multi billion pound owners can't see the value in exceptional talent then we're in for a long road back.

You'd expect that City will spend massively this summer considering they are entering a new era and their charges have yet to be answered. Wouldn't surprise me to see them sign Anderson, the likes of Mbappe or Vini with Haaland going to Madrid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭NITRO95

If we don't sign Anderson, and we won't be signing Anderson, nobody at the club will talk about Anderson. We know from guys like Mitten and Whitwell that Anderson was seen as the priority signing coming into this summer. Why do you think that has changed? Do you believe that has changed without us speaking to Andersons people?

You seem to want some Woodwardesque PR win of "well we matched their offer and offered him even more money". Thats ridiculous. Thats how we ended up with Martial, Jones, Rashford and Sancho amongst others on obscene wages that nobody else would match. The reality of Manchester United in 2026 is that we can't spend £120m on one player and then go and buy another 4 or 5 to fill the squad. Thats just not going to happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭kyleman

Very true but I don’t think City will spend 120 mil on him either.

We have to balance the books but we have a huge budget by all the usual reports and if it’s a choice between Anderson/ Tonali for 100m or Baleba/Fernandes for 75m I would rather spend a bit extra.

Anderson might be leaning towards City but he obviously hasn’t ruled out coming to us and I’m sure we will know shortly.

This is at the very heart of it. We pay the Glazers their pound of flesh and then struggle to afford the necessary squad building with adequate replacements in order to challenge for titles. Those **** are nothing but a millstone around our necks.
