Plus with England being in the shape they are in this place will be alive (relatively speaking) with all sorts of nonsense as they progress through the tournament.

Haha yeah, to think that the English hyped up much more weaker/unbalanced teams in the past - no left winger etc. But didn't alter the tactics to suit the players. Now they have a manager that picks players to suit his tactics. Overall, plenty of good teams in it. And hopefully a few dark horses have good runs in it. To keep the interest for the neutrals.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Shocked he hasn't taken Gibbs White. On form he absolutely should have gone.

They made a good call taking Ivan toney.

That German squad looks dangerous, could be a dark horse

Ah, that Martin Ødegaard is over-rated if you ask me! :)

He is the first Norwegian to win the Premier league after all ;)

In a "Roberto Mancini" world, he is! He is actually the captain, which I didn't know.

Actually United had 3, 4 if you include Nevland

Plenty of outrage about the England squad. I'd have picked a different squad, but i think it's clear what Tuchel is doing, whether anyone agrees or not. He wants a club feel to the team, and a set way they play.

    Pickford

    James Stones Guehi O'Reilly

    Anderson Rice Bellingham

    Saka Kane Rashford

That's his team. And everyone else is in the squad to fill in like for like when necessary so as not to disrupt his system. In that context, the biggest surprise is taking Madueke over Bowen.

Gibbs-White has been outstanding. Can't see why he wasn't picked. Does Bellingham really deserve to be in ahead of him? Also surprising to see Jarrod Bowen left out

And too many defenders in that squad imo, especially when you consider the versatility of some of them (like Livramento and Burn).

Do they really need John Stones, with a total of 4 league starts this season?

He's not taking MGW and Foden because he doesn't want those type of 10s. I think Eze is closer to the Bellingham/Rogers profile he likes, and can also play on the left.

Tuchel isn't taking the best players. He's taking the best players for his plan.

Too many people seem to think a national side can have 3 or 4 ready to go formations and change up drastically between or mid game.

He is right to have his 11 and subs which are essentially copies with fresh legs. You will probably have to change your attacking approach at some stage but the players he has can do that.

I forgot one other one where I don't know what hes thinking.

    Dan Burn over Lewis Hall.

He can only be preferring Burn because he's desperate for a left footed CB. He could've picked Colwill, but i reckon in his head, Colwill hasn't been in many squads because of the injury.

Hall is an ideal fill-in for O'Reilly if O'Reilly gets injured, or needs to be moved to midfield during a game. Burn can cover CB and LB, but he's a painfully average LB compared to Hall, and you've CBs who can cover Guehi.

So yeah, Burn is a mad one for me. Needless downgrade of a position. I'd have even taken Shaw over Burn.

    Excluding goalkeepers.

    Defenders.

Maguire, Lewis Hall, Alexander Arnold, Luke Shaw, Fikayo Tomori, James Justin, Levi Colwill, Tyrik Mitchell, Keane Lewis-Potter.

    Midfielders

Alex Scott. Kiernan Dewsbury Hall, Morgan Gibbs-White, James Garner, Wharton, Conor Gallagher.

    Forwards

Cole Palmer, Jarrod Bowen, Danny Welbeck, DCL, Hudson-Odoi, Solanke, Foden

Yeah anyone who thinks Norway is a one man team hasn't a clue. Same for Portugal who Ronaldo is now far from the best player in the squad.

I'm on the verge of a site ban. Please don't rage bait me, I'm easily triggered especially late at night!

Sounds weird until you remember Madrid dont actually have that many Spaniards these days. Fernandez and Huijsen woulda been closest to a call up but Cucurella and Laporte aren't exactly downgrades to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,837 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Madrid based press will just waiting for the first sign of trouble to rip the team apart now. Probably have the articles already written.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,127 ✭✭✭adaminho

It's usually Madrid players are the ones causing trouble!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,837 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Doesn't matter. The Madrid and Catalan press are toxic.

I think Spain will win this World Cup but if they don't knives will be out.

I've never known a WC to be so close and be so little excitement and hype around it.

I have never been as disinterested in a football tournament as this one. It's going to be a stinker.

I feel the same for a number of reasons

    1. The amount of teams which will probably cause the group stages to be dreadful
    2. So many games on overnight…… Dont remember this in 86 or 94
    3. Where its on (personal opinion)

that said, once it gets to last 16 and later it will surely suck everyone in

Go back and you'll find the same type of posts about 2022.

I think it's just the age demographic of us boards.ie users.

This sort of thing had a huge buildup in ones head when we were younger.

In fairness the PL only finished Sunday and there are 2 English teams playing European finals this week. Couple that with the fact that some teams haven't even finalised squads yet leads to a muted build up so far. It'll ramp up soon when there is no other football to compete with.

Personally I didn't feel that way about 2022 or any of the recent Euros.

#1 is the biggest problem for me. Can't see myself starting to give a sht until the last 16 where as I used be tuned in from the off.

As for #3 I'm used to the World Cup being in sht holes but watching Infantino debase himself in ever more desperate ways has taken its toll on my enthusiasm.

There will surely be some absolute drubbings in the group stages…

Can easily see the Germans putting 10+ past Curacao (they can be ruthless against minnows), likewise Spain v Cape Verde, and then Iraq have to play Haaland and then France..

    • In 1954 Austria beat Switzerland 7-5 in what was, and is still the highest scoring WC game ever - 12 goals.. I see that record being beaten next month.
    • In 1994 Oleg Salenko scored 5 goals in a single match (a record) as Russia beat Cameroon 6-1 at USA94 - Haaland could beat that record if he's up for it against Iraq, or one of the Germans against Curacao.. (probably Woltemode because boring Germans always score sh1t loads of goals)
    • In 1958 Just Fontaine scored 13 goals at the WC, a record for a player in a single tournament.. I see that record possibly being beaten next month..

Miroslav Klose's record of 16 WC goals will be gone this summer - 100%

    • Messi - 13
    • Mbappe - 12
    • Kane, Neymar, Ronaldo - 8

Opening game is also a repeat of the 2010 opener which was a horrendously underwhelming Opening match.

Everyone remembers the finish but the build up was excellent too

It's funny how possession wasn't as much of a thing back then, I remember the Cambiasso goal in 2006 that was claimed as one of the best goals ever scored because there were 20+ passes leading up to it. These days you get a passage of play like that every game but when you look at games as recent as the 2000's you just see how cheap possession was and you wouldn't pass backwards unless you were trying to hold a lead and slow it down. Lots of balls over the top.

But I agree with the general point that there looks to be a hell of a lot of group games without obvious quality. As a kid you'd want to watch every world cup game. But Iran v New Zealand at 2am? Algeria v Jordan at 4am? DR Congo v Uzbekistan at 12:30am?

I value my sleep significantly more these days

Reminds me of the opening game of 2008 where both teams just wanted to counter attack which lead to both sides hoofing it to each other like a giant tennis match.
