Thanks alot. I looked through options as best I could but always fear I picked the one they pushed at me.

The loading is a pain but at least I got away handy until this age with no medical or health insurance costs.

Hi Ruddy! Would also appreciate your opinions if possible! Family of 4 (male 39, female 37 and a 3 and 4 year old). Currently with VHI on their PMI 04 10 plan. Due to renew in a few weeks but trying to reduce costs if possible as funds are tight as a single income family at the moment.

Wife has migraine issues which are currently being managed by a high tech injection paid through the Drug Payment Scheme. I'm due a sleep study in 2 weeks to determine if I have sleep apnoea. Kids are generally very healthy, though we have claimed for an adenoidectomy and grommets for one of them last year.

I would maybe see a GP once a year, wife maybe 4-5 times. Don't think maternity cover is of importance to us any more!

No need to apologise, thanks for getting back to me. We're Dublin based, so no concerns on those hospitals.

We've actually used Swiftcare a fair bit but I think Employer had some add-on in place as it only cost us 25 for a visit which has been great when you want to be seen quickly or out of hours.

I'll take a look at the other one, thanks - I guess the only alternative if we want to reduce premium is to drop some cover. Current plan was just what was given to us so just took it for granted, will do a bit more digging.

Ok your employer has something called employer extra's unfortunately thats not available to you once you leave the group scheme and standard rules apply (no swiftcare cover). You might want to look at a plan like PMI 45 10 if you want to keep that swiftcare access but it will be at a cost of €75 per visit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Unfortunately maternity is an item that has to be on all plans so cant be removed.

A few decent options, PMI 45 10 might be attrctive as 75% back on GP and Consultants but higher in patient excess. Other than that i would be looking at PMI 52 10.

Hi Ruddy, thank you for the all the advice here! You mentioned in this earlier post that 4D were bad .. ours has increased significantly (+26% this year) with our renewal now quoted at €8656! … 2 mid-fifties adults and 25, 23, 21yo's - parents and 21yo on 4D Health2, other two on Benefit Access 300. Renewal date is 31/05.

Is Health Guide 2 as you suggested previously as a replacement for 4D the best option? And what might you suggest for the BA300's? Is there an alternative from Laya that might be more appropriate? The increases are really becoming ridiculous with 26.4% in a year, and unsustainable!

    Would appreciate your advice, thanks!

    Hi Ruddy,

I'm on the VHI PMI 53 10. My employer used to pay the premiums but I left that employer 4 years ago and continued paying myself (40M).

I haven't needed to use hospitals, etc. in the last few years so I'm looking to move to a cheaper option. A public hospital is good enough, looking to cover some consultant/test costs and maybe GP fees. The excess on my current plan GP fees was €10, and I got back €25 on a charge of €70. Not great so if the monthly payments are very low and don't cover GP fees, i'll be fine with that.

I only continued with insurance due to the excess/loading on people who haven't had insurance etc.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Ok so firstly 4D Health 2 is now terrible value, €2,438. My strong recommendation would be to cancel.

An Irish Life Health plan you could consider is the HEALTH GUIDE 2 scheme which would cost €1,730 per adult per year (inclusive of the discount).

    • This plan covers a private room in public hospitals and semi private room in standard private hospitals.. The excess in private hospitals is €150 for each admission or €75 on any day-case procedure in private hospitals only;
    • The Health Guide 2 also includes cover for a limited amount of procedures in the high-tech hospitals (Blackrock and Mater Private Dublin) for listed cardiac procedures, listed special procedures and approved day-case procedures
    • This plan allows a 50% refund for GPs, Consultants as well as refunds on other outpatient specialists. The maximum refund on this plan is €4,000 per annum.
    • Irish Life Health have a list of 10 restricted procedures where a shortfall of €3,000 will apply in private hospitals for certain orthopaedic procedures only (hip, knee and shoulder replacements). There is also a €500 shortfall for certain ophthalmic procedures (such as cataracts) in private hospitals. In many cases, the hospital may waive this for you but this must always be checked in advance to avoid unnecessary shortfalls;
    • To get this discount you need to set up a brand new policy starting on the 31/05/26 (discount will not apply on a policy set up after the 01/06. You can set up a policy here https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote?preselectedPlan=170H3D1

You can cancel your existing plan by calling or emailing irish life health.

    The key differences here are;

    • Higher shortfall on orthopaedic replacement procedures (€3,000 instead of €1,500)
    • €500 Shortfall on certain ophthalmic procedures such as cataracts and eye injections
    • No personalised packages

For the young adults 21-25 I would be advising that they go to VHI. They have the best pricing, I would be saying put them on PMI 43 16 (could also consider it yourself if you wanted). Big upgrade for this on BA300 and similar to 4D2.

Total Cost: 2 adults HG2 with discount €3,460 +€3,610 for Young adults making a total of €7,070 which should be close to a flat year on year renewal with a nice upgrade in cover for the young adults.

You are likley looking at Enhanced Care 350 day to day if you want to save some money, this €355 cheaper, it has higher private hospital excess's but maintains some day to day cover. PMI 53 10 is actually well priced but if you want to save money i would be looking at the enhanced care plans.

    Hi Ruddy,

I would appreciate your opinion on the following please.

I am currently on the Irish Life MyPlan 500 Day-to-Day plan, and the renewal is coming up with another increase in premium. Could you suggest any credible alternatives that may offer similar value?

I do like the day-to-day expenses cover, and thankfully I have not needed to attend hospital over the last few years.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

That is a good plan and if you want the day to day element there are not many strong alternatives at that price point.

Sounds like you are happy with cover and benefit so best advice would be to cancel existing plan and resign up here, if your renewal is before 1st of June that will give you an 8.33% discount or if after that there is a 5% discount.

Hi Ruddy, thanks very much for the advice and its much appreciated

Ended up going with Inspire Access saving almost €600 a year, cover is very similar to the plan I was on. Thansk a lot @eastmeathcoast and @ruddy1987 !

Hi Ruddy I would appreciate your input on my upcoming renewal. Single male, mid thirties and in good general health. I do a lot of running so sport related cover would be my main concern health insurance wise at present. I've also had an eye procedure previously but there are no indications I'll need another anytime soon.

I'm currently on Laya ConnectChoice and with a 1st July renewal date I'm seeing a not insignificant price increase. Open to reducing my day to day cover or increasing the excess if you believe there's better value out there. In the Cork/Kerry area so having cover for all private hospitals in this region is a must. Thanks

I would be telling you to have a look at a new Irish Life plan Health action Plus, its €1,734 versus €1,825. It has some excellent screening and proactive benefits that might suit you. Also has good physio cover.

Your current plan is actually one of the better Laya plans as it has 75% cash back on GP and a high outpatient cap.

Thanks for the advise Ruddy. Will review and decide which way to go.

I'm on the VHI 35 13 plan. From a previous employer. Expires end of August.

Every year I get notification and say must look at alternatives but its bad time of year with other stuff always on. So this year I am looking now

    1 Adult (me) age 50

I would still call my health good but in the past year I have had a few one off things, required stomach scope and had large kidney stone. Everything ok now (touch wood!). They gave rise to GP visits etc and I had opportunity to claim back visits but in 15 years (as employee when originally got scheme and the years since) this is the only claims I have made

    Whats important to me

I travel a lot and I suppose knowing I'm covered abroad is important. I also have VHI multitrip.

If i have another procedure / test like this year that I can get it done. I dont mind a largerer excess if the savings makes sense. e.g. if annual savings is greater than one excess then I would select the cheaper plan

Day to day reclaim of expenses is nice but not important. Similar to previous I owuld probably pick the cheaper option

Live in west of country so access to high techs is restricted so not so important

Have a look at PMI 32 12 it is cheaper by 145 EUR p.a. and benefits look slightly better but a very similar plan. If you change provider, Layas Transform Plus (save 260 EUR) and LEvel Health Plan Pro+ (save 119) or Plan C (save 139) worth a look. There are lots of choices for you here for a cheaper plan without much change in benefits tbh. Look up "PMI 35 13" on www.medplan.ie

Hey Ruddy, thanks so much for the work you put in here …you're helping a lot of people.

We are a family of 4 soon to be 5, I am on Laya Prosper and I use the day to day quite a bit to claim back counselling, GPs, physio, dental etc. My partner and 2 small kids are on Laya Inspire Plus but none of them use the cover (thankfully!!) bar one or two visits over Christmas to the Laya clinic for the kids. We're paying the bones of EUR4,000 a year for all of us and it's just not sustainable, especially adding in another baby in the fold. I would imagine I'm better staying separate as I do claim back for every day expenses, but woud you have any advice for a good policy for the rest of the family to go on? The kids are 3, 1 and the baby arrives in July. Thanks so much!

A newborn can be put under your own policy for free with Laya once you register them before something like 13 weeks, and they also have their Kids Go Free offer on certain policies where you just pay for one kid and the others are free.

Hi Ruddy (this thread should be renamed ask Ruddy :-D )

We are on the below plan now for probably 7 years as I originally got it with my old company but kept it going. Not sure if its best value these days as its very expensive, although I know it offers good cover.

I am open to switching but renewal was in Nov 2025 so presume I cant switch until Nov 2026? Do I contact them in October to let them know?

In terms of what I want from a plan, the main thing is to have private consultant procedures covered ie colonoscopy, septoplasty etc.

I think I care less about the 200 euro consultant fee reimbursement (as can claim a decent amount back on tax and its very rare we go to a consultant (missus is foreign and gets most serious stuff done in her home country, I have gone for a few scans and colonoscopy over the past few years), more so care about the surgery etc being covered (but may not be possible to untangle surgeries with initial consultant fees) and skipping the queue so to speak.

Also, we plan on having children in the next year or two so good maternity cover for herself is important.

    Better Ultra ILH - 381 Euro for 2 adults Dublin based (both 36 m + f)

EDIT: I should add that I saw a consultant about getting a septoplasty so not sure if I would lose the right to this surgery if I switched provider as it would then be classed as "pre-existing"?

escapees- yes you’re right I spoke with Laya about that recently. But in order to avail of the kids go free the adults would have to shift to the Flexi 125 plan they advised us … and quoted €10,300 per annum for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

A few extra plans to consider:

    https://www.hia.ie/comparison-tool/results/3AARozQ4OKUxMTkzOMKQkAGhMKM2NTAAk80H6gUdwpQ6zQEbzQGbzQFIlQcEBQkGkJGTpUFkdWx0AAHDww%3D%3D

If ok with 60% ortho I would say PMI 52 10 probably the best fit but if further savings needed you could drop back to Enhanced Care 350 day to day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

It might be worth considering Level health, kids under 3 are free so you would only be paying for one child. They have also got very cheap children's pricing.

It might suit your partner to go on a plan like PLan B or Pro if she doesnt have a lot of outpatient costs.

If you use your plan a lot you likely need a good level of cover. Proposer is not terrible but something like Inspire Care might be worth looking at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Great tio,,,Just to flag Laya kids free over ends at end of June again so if July renewal this is likely no use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

With Irish Life you can switch anytime, there has been a few price increases sine your renewal so I would say stay as you are until the next renewal but you definitely should look to change then. That would be a good level of cover but likely you are over insured for your age.

Can you drop me a message closer to your renewal and ill give better guidance.

You dont need to worry about your current condition, if you change plan you will still be covered to the level you currently have. Its only if there was an upgrade in your cover that you would be limited to the cover on your old plan for 2 years.

    Thanks for the reply.

Sorry I am a bit confused. Why are you saying wait until renewal date if I could in theory switch right now?

Re current condition, so I will be entitled to the lower cover if I reduced cover but then that could mean I wouldnt be covered for the septoplasty potentially? Or would all healthcare plans cover stuff like this?

    Thanks again
