Would not say worried, more just hope they do.

Think Spurs will nick a point anyway so that will do if im right.

Fernandes is the big thing for me. We need to be in Monday morning and get the deal done. Maybe offer them a player on loan as well to benefit both clubs

Yeah I definitely think Spurs will get a point so hopefully Sunday evening there gone, and gone for a while, I remember Steve Bruce when he was over Birmingham and they played West Ham the final day of the season and he said that he would love to send them down after 95, and he duly did!

I hope they would have made enquiries already and I think that's a great suggestion re loan players etc. Anything that would help get an advantage would be good 👍.

Mason Mount would look lovely in claret and blue.

Fernandes talks highly of Bruno and you hear him talk about Bruno watching him play while with the Sporting academy and wanting to impress him. Would be great if playing alongside Bruno for a few years could sway him.

Though PSG are supposedly linked with him and they've their own Portuguese contingent which includes Nuno Mendes who he probably came up through the Sporting academy with. Along with being the best team in Europe.

How many times have West Ham been relegated since then?

I think the feeling is more like if West Ham don't go down this year then they'll try again next year. For Spurs this could be the only chance.

West Ham’s Fernandes didn’t make Portugal’s World Cup squad which is crazy to me.

Feeling a bit sad this morning. Obviously Arsenal were the best team over the season but it’s yet again seeing another team win the premier league that’s not United. I remember hearing older United fans saying 92/93 was their favourite because of the long wait. I’m sure Arsenal fans are saying that today, and Liverpool in 2020. I completely get that now. I’d like to think I’ll see United win the league again, and I reckon it will be the most special of them all

Next season could be quite open - Pep leaving to be replaced by his inferior doppelganger, Pool seem to be inexplicably sticking with Slot, Alonso is untried in the PL (and Chelsea are a clown club anyway). Arsenal are a bit of an unknown quantity, they've been getting progressively worse in the second half of the season and there's surely going to be clamp down on their set-piece tactics. But also, finally winning the league might spur them on. Obviously we're also taking a bit of a gamble sticking with Big Michael but if we get the transfer business right, who know, second half the season etc…

Yeah the one position they are absolutely stacked in is midfield. Instead of naming 4 keepers you could probably take another outfield player.

Ah I see they've named 27 so the 4th keeper is likely not officially in the squad but being brought to train.

Feeling the exact same way. I don’t begrudge their fans this success at all. But, it does leave me with this feeling that we have fallen further behind. As you say, another different club has now won the league since we last did. We could kind of hide behind the City thing to a point, but there’s no excuse now that Liverpool, Arsenal & Chelsea have won titles in that period.

It should fuel the club more to deliver a league title. Pep is leaving, Arsenal have won their league title, Liverpool seem to be in a weird spot and we are probably in the best place post SAF in terms of footballing structure. It feels like in the next two-three years is a prime opportunity to strike for a league title - I hope we don’t waste that window.

However - my gut feeling at the moment is that there is probably too much work needed to build a title-winning team, competing in a season with 50 odd games. I do think this third place finish, while it’s a great outcome in a bad season, isn’t something I would use as a baseline for where we’re at heading into next season.

I don't think we are as far off Arsenal and City as some may think. We did beat both of them this season. With proper midfield reinforcements, we should be challenging.

Arsenal froze to a degree too i know they were poor .... but they have won it. attack minded players approached by Arsenal would have to look at them and go id get loads of game time there.

Same here, Arsenal, Liverpool, City and Chelsea all won the league since we have. All of them have made Champions League finals and very possible they'll all have won that too, jesus even Spurs have made a Champions League final.

I'm not taking anything away from Bruno and his assists, its a great achievement but the way fans are celebrating individual records/achievements etc just feels all very small time. Probably just me though, because I genuinely couldn't give a toss about individual records/achievements if the team isn't winning/competing for anything. I dunno just feels like standards are completely in the bin, like the last few years of Wenger at Arsenal fans delighted just getting Champions League every year.

As FourFourRed says above I just hope this fuels the club on now, this is a massive summer. Liverpool are a mess, no more Pep, Spurs are Spurs, **** knows what Alonso will be like at Chelsea but that club is basketcase. Arsenal will rightly be heavy favourites next season but I don't see why we cant be the best of the rest with right signings and thats if Carrick is the right man which I have serious doubts about.

The problem we have largely leads back to the glazers and the fact that they are bleeding the club dry which is slowly eroding our fan base which inturn is destroying our earning power

yeah there's a bit of recency bias with Arsenal, they were very good in the first half of the season and a solid defence goes a long way. But if the authorites do crack down on their set-piece shenanigans it could make life more difficult for them.

I seem to be generally a much more optimistic poster than a lot of others here but I don't think we are that far off where we want to be.

    Very solid, dependable GK

Our young CBs will be better with another season under their belts and I think if the right deal becomes a available a CB will be bought

    LB definitely needs improvement

RB we have two good if not exactly exceptional options right now. Good enough to win a league IMO

CM we all know what needs to be done

LW we have Amad & Mbuemo who both have had disappointing seasons IMO but we know what they are capable of

RW we have Cunha and Dorgu and I can't see anyone being signed there this summer

CF Sesko with a PL season will be even better next season. We know we need to improve the backups and someone that can add 10-12 goals while being a backup would be the dream

Overall, yes we have work to do but honesty other than City, i don't feel we are miles off anyone else's squads IF, massive if, we get the CM and LB sorted this summer

You could be right - of course it’s very important that the club gets the Casemiro replacement as close to perfect as possible. Ugarte should be sold and adequately replaced. Neither of these things are easy.

If we signed Anderson (unlikely?), it goes a long way to alleviating concerns. The reality might end up being Baleba who comes with a big question mark over his head. And let’s say Ugarte can’t be shifted - there’s no way we could then say “we’re not that far off Arsenal or City” when next season is a minimum of 8 additional games, likely 12 ish more games + more travel, which means less rest and training time.

Even with an Anderson-esque signing, maintaining third next season will be a challenge, when it’s likely that Chelsea and Liverpool will put up more of a fight. Villa balanced Europa League with a decent league campaign this year - they will challenge for top 4/5 next year again.

Positives - the recruitment team have had ample time to identify midfield targets for this summer. The ground work should have been put in and they should know what they’re doing and get it done relatively quickly. (Maybe a bit of wishful thinking there)

Lammens doing so well in his first season has pushed the need for a goalkeeper down the priority list - allowing for funds to be focussed elsewhere.

Forward line - it’s a brand new front 3, but they know each other and have had time to gel. Going into next season with that chemistry already there (not fully, but to an extent) helps - a couple of more depth options are needed though. Can Lacey step up?

I’m positive to a certain extent - my concern is that we will be depending on too many injury-prone players, for a lot more games.

Defence is a concern: Maz, Shaw, De Ligt, Maguire, Martinez, Yoro - would all worry me in terms of staying fit/injury-free for a full season of 54-ish games. Dalot as frustrating as he can be, is a standout in terms of availability.

Mount is a very good squad option on paper, but you simply can’t rely on availability there either. Mainoo has had his injuries.

We just don’t have the bodies to cover if we suffer an injury crisis, which will be compounded by more and more games. I think those are valid concerns.

I don't like London clubs generally so I'm happy that one is going down. I'm pretty mercenary about West Ham though, in that I want us to sign Fernandes and that will be easier if they get relegated. Otherwise, meh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 903 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

It was a wonderful feeling, especially after what happened the season before, with Leeds snatching it from us. After that season it felt like we would never win it, so the 92/93 was made all the sweeter because of it. And well done to Arsenal, their fans deserve to celebrate!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,199 ✭✭✭Robson99

Same as that. No love for any of them especially them shower that won silverware last night. Hopefully PSG will school them in the CL Final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭scottser

Yeh, I'm conflicted about that. On the one hand, Arsenal are a proper football club and not a sportswashing shower of kunz. I don't want City, Newcastle, PSG or any of them lifting trophies but Arsenal won't have enough to beat PSG; they're not good enough to win the double.

Henry was a striker, his core responsibility was to find space around the box and score + assist goals.

Fernandes played CM in a midfield 2 for half the season, his core responsibilities were to provide broad offensive support from deep and cover ground defensively. Both responsibilities were equal in importance to the role he was given.

In the second half of the season he was more like a typical number 10, his core responsibilities were specifically to directly create chances and link with the midfield.

Given the context, Fernandes' numbers are outstanding and deserve praise. I'm not sure why there's a need to bring Henry (a striker and probably the best player in PL history) into the conversation as a comparison.

Also not sure why Roy Keane's opinions are being treated very seriously by others, whether you think they're good or bad takes. He was a great player but is a shock jock barstool pundit who wouldn't be considered for any serious job in modern football. His role on TV is entertainment, not analysis.

can the 2 fernandes's's's play together?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,828 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

There is an argument though that if authorities crack down on set pieces it might benefit Arsenal even more. They have the best deliveries and one of the best aerial threats.

Could be a Manchester club going down yet, saving one of the two London clubs. Hopefully so.
