NCT waiting times

    My car is due for NCT in about 6 weeks. Brought it for a full service and got a few bits fixed. But when I went to book an appointment, there is nothing available in my closest centres for months. It is showing dates like late October and even November.

    Is it normal? Is there some time of the day to go online and book when new apportionments are released or something?

    Yep its normal. Its due to the crap way the NCT booking system is administered.

    Two ways to get one quicker…

    Wait till about 11pm and check bookings then. I check regularly from about 10.30pm and you'll find that more bookings are released. I've never had to wait more than a week but might have to check a couple of nights to get a local booking.

    Phone them. They will get you a booking within 4 weeks.

    Wake me up when it's all over.

    Customer Charter

    1. We aim to ensure that the average lead time for an appointment at an individual NCT centre is less than or equal to 15 days. You will be provided with a test, free of charge, where an appointment cannot be offered within a 28 day period, unless any of the following apply:
      • the test is overdue by more than 7 days at the time of contacting us;
      • an appointment was offered 7 days or more prior to the test due date;
      • you have made specific requests regarding suitable days, times or dates;
      • you have declined or rearranged two or more appointments;
      • you have failed to attend an appointment; or
      • you have previously accepted or requested an appointment outside of the 28 day period.

    Call them up and remind them of the Charter and they will sort you out!

    Thanks, I will have a look this evening and see if I can get something. If not I will give them a call

    Mine was due in early August. When I looked online the availability was for October. I rang them a month ago, got a text saying they'd get a date. 6 days later a text came with a date. Passed this morning.

    I mentioned on a similar thread before about checking at night, and was told I was wrong. It always works for me.

    Checking late night seems to usually but not always work for me too.

    As has been said, if you call and refer to the charter you'll get a test.

    You can get yourself on the priority list online, you’ll get an appointment within a week.

    Absolutely no need to ring them

    Simply select to be put on the priority list, choose the times of week / times of day that suit. Then within a week they will send you a text with a time. You can select that or go back onto the priority list.

    Several times are set aside for retests that have to be done within 30 days. These are then reallocated depending on the number of retests expected.

    Always works for me too but might need to check for a few nights. I've been lucky when checking early in the morning too before 8.00am. Never had to wait more than a few days.

    But as I always point out there should be a better system. Only releasing 1/3 of the slots online creates this daft situtation. How they can say its anything due to available staff is beyond me as its always the same guys on duty whenever I go for a test.

    Wake me up when it's all over.

    I could not find a newer relevant thread.

    NCT out on car I purchased by 6 months.

    Applied online for priority list on

    2nd of May

    19th of May (17 days later) get a text saying my "priority" date is 10th of June, about 5 weeks after first contacting them.

    I am unlikely to get a free test as per the rules. I asked not to have the test weekday daytime, also car was booked in for test by previous owner who cancelled it as car was now sold.

    So I think the waiting lists are getting worse. I wonder if they give you lower priority if you opt out of certain times, then they know you are ineligible for a free test. If I had more time on my hands I would push for a free test every time.

    I know I can probably ring for a sooner date but car is not yet ready for NCT.. I might even need to delay it myself...

    Just log on to their website at midnight. They release a lot of appointments at midnight.

    My test is tomorrow lunch time (Wednesday). I booked it Sunday night at about 11:30.

    If I go online now it will only let me pay, not change the date, but as said I may need to delay anyway.

    I’ve just booked a test for Friday - had a choice of 8 time slots!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭Orban6

    I've noticed that the later you leave it, the better the chances are at getting a short date.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭Dex Dexta

    It’s astonishing that last night there were 8 slots available, at my usual Centre, for Friday, yet now the nearest slots are in 3 months time!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,555 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

    Saying your test center has slots is useless information unless you say where it is. Dublin for example is a lot busier than everywhere else.

    For years I used to wait to within 2 weeks and ring them. Always got a priority spot.

    Last year they sent a email just after my test allowing me to book the car in for the following year. Simple. Why they didn't do this before is baffling.

    Though this year they haven't sent the email so I guess I'll be back to ringing to 2 weeks before the date.

    Be true poorly run system.

    Arklow - every bit as busy as Dublin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,224 ✭✭✭✭The Continental Op

    NCT only initially release 30% of appointment dates online. It doesn't matter how busy the test center its very rare that there are no unbooked appointments released late at night a few days before they come available.

    This is why the priority list is effectively the main list. Imo.
