You'd be better off searching for a kona or e niro on done deal or used cars ni. Wont be much of a saving id imagine if they were to try and source you a specific car i would think. Whats your budget?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,613 ✭✭✭wassie

Not necessarily. A friend picked up a Kona ev a few weeks back and was very happy, saying his car had exceptionally low mileage compared to buying for the same money here. But he had been looking for a couple of months and said he had to move fast as it was a good deal.

Did that but better value up North been onto a few dealers to see if they can source E Niro or Kona for budget so see how that goes and if they do charge a finders fee

Hi all I'm looking at Importing Citroen EC4 from Bells Crossgar Motors. Now I've read alot lot about importing electric cars from NI and everywhere it says it needs to be in NI for a certain amount of time. This car is just being brought to NI from UK but the guy at Bells said that it will be eligible for import as it was NI car as they are enlisted in some scheme and they sell loads off cars like that to ROI with no issues. I asked them what paperwork will they provide and he said Invoice, V5C registration doc and SAD. Anyone had any experience with Bells Crossgar Motors?

I'll be curious to know what this scheme is. My understanding is the car has to be on Northern Ireland plates and registered to the dealer or individual up there ''for a reasonable period of time". Cars on GB plates are not eligible for VRT exemption.

Just sent him a mail there asking that will update when I get an answer. Just never read anything similar so thought id ask here if anyone run into something similar.

The Windsor Framework allows for removal import taxes (VAT and Duty) on a vehicle imported from NI if it is imported correctly from UK to NI for sale by a dealer (i.e. Dealer must lodge a customs declaration). This is separate to the reasonable use rule.

The VRT exemption relates to all EV vehicles, not import status.

This is not about VRT, it’s about VAT and provided the dealer has imported it correctly under SAD procedures for movement of goods between GB and the EU (NI) then the reasonable time test does not apply.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 beansys

Yea that pretty much his answer as well.

"This scheme doesn’t have a specific name but it was open to dealers who wanted to participate offering a 300000 Euro pot. This is enabled by the Windsor Framework. The supporting docs we give means no CUSTOMS/VAT"

Is there anything I should watch out for on the paperwork they will provide? If anyone has any additional information on this way of import iI'd appreciate any tips.

Im no expert on VRT, but in my recent search for an EV from a NI garage, I asked garages to provide a SAD or TSS doc, most could not or and some had never heard of it, However other garages are aware of it, and can provide a SAD, there is usually a 500 STG admin charge for it.

Really depends if the dealer is selling cars to buyers from the ROI or not.

If they are only selling locally, then the import process and paperwork is greatly simplified and don't have any need or motivation to go through the full EU custom declarations process.

As long as you have SAD, invoice and V5 you'll be fine. Bells, Saltmarine etc all know what they are at and are above board. There will be no vat or customs due with a SAD as this means it has been imported to NI properly and thus in free circulation in the EU. Some charge a fee for SAD, £350 is fair £500 prob a bit more expensive looking but price it in to the car as a whole compared to buying south.

there was a new ebrief issued about vat on imported cars, unsure will this affect the in use for a reasonable time up north route for vat. Has anyone looked into it that can offer some insight?

Nothing obvious standing out to me. Although I only skimmed through it

It would appear that any privately purchased car which is not accompanied by the original V5C issued at the date of purchase by the previous owner will now be indisputably deemed to be a GB car regardless of any other evidence that can be provided, likewise any car that does not have verifiable history of servicing in NI.

So you can effectively no longer buy a car privately from anyone who has moved house since they bought the car (no matter how long ago it was), or who has had to have a new V5C issued for any reason (e.g. due to a mistake in their address or due to losing it), or anyone who services their own car or doesn't keep service documentation.

In other words, as close to a "you can only import NI cars bought from dealers" rule as you can get.

looks like the 3 month use in NI definitely won’t work with a car originally brought in from GB, I was just about to purchase one off an NI private individual but it’s only a uk number plate has just lived in NI for a while.

In this case should be fine though, as long as you have some.mot and service history?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,613 ✭✭✭wassie

My read is that technicslly things haven't changed, but they are tightening up slightly on evidence required to determine if the NI private ownership qualification exemption applies.

If it's genuine NI car then you should be fine. I would guess the 3 to 6 months still applies.

Rebenue will determine what is a "reasonable" time period of private ownership by the level of documentation the buyer can provide during the VRT appointment. This is where the additional evidence may be required.

The service history can be a tricky one with physical records that you could bring to the VRT, was looking at a car recently and most of the verifiable history was on the car makers app. Same with some of the other documentation; I'm not sure if everyone would be keen to share insurance docs with their name and address on them, what if you don't have physical MOT records either only online verification through the reg? Not sure if they'd only accept that and there's no disc. Most frustrating thing is despite all these prescriptive rules they still don't define the period of personal use.

The other thing with the car I'm looking at it is although it's been in use in NI since at least 2020, the current owner only got it a month and a half ago. Presumably despite all this extra verificable information that I might be able to get as previous owner was family member, revenue won't give a shite and only look at change of ownership date.

You don't need the V5 to see if a car was MOT'd in Northern Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,613 ✭✭✭wassie

Yap, scratch my advice - But you will get this message on the public MOT site: "Not available for tests carried out in Northern Ireland".

Thats would certainly confirm an MOT in NI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 334 ✭✭PureBred

YYou Can get a reprint of an MOT cert for £10 from any MOT centre apparently.

When Irish revenue discuss NI plates does that mean that cars imported UK to NI then get a new reg plate number when the paperwork is complete or what does it refer to?

And to import UK-NI then to here does it now mean you've to get new plates, insure it, MOT it and service it along with getting the (seemingly hard to obtain) SAD? Was going to go down this route as Ive a friend up north who could own it for 3 months but now its looking quite complex and comes with the risk of getting hit with the VAT anyway. Which is a pain because the 2019 eGolf I want asks €13k-€15k on forecourts here but over in the UK I can get one for around €8k-€9k. Would be amazing to land one for that price but its looking like I have to give up on the idea now

wasn’t mot’d or serviced since it was up there so don’t think it will work

Nothing stopping anyone from driving up for a quick MOT & service in Newry

Feel like this is a stupid question but I'm confused how this works.

If I buy a car from an NI dealer, and the car is not NI registered, the dealer can sort out the customs and VAT via HMRC and I can just pay for the car and the customs all in one go? And then they provide me with the customs documentation, so all I'm doing here is paying the VRT?

Is my understanding here correct? This sounds like the more straightforward way versus doing customs here?

Yes, except the price of the car doesn't change. Your just paying for the car, not the customs. They are no customs duties between UK & NI
