I'm still expecting Casey to be the successor post-JGP tbh (think to where JGP was at Casey's stage in his career, for example). I think he has the best pass quaility of anyone on the island, and his kicking, imo, is hugely underrated.

Some will point to his physical limitations, but I think they can be overblown too. For example, last weekend in the first minute against Connacht, he had a 1-on-1 on the wing vs Bundee. You'd nearly expect Bundee to blow right over him but it didn't happen. Similar thing last night, where we saw an example of his athelticism for his stature (almost) keeping that ball in play. He also has an excellent snipe in him, imo.

He hasn't had as good a season as his previous 2, but I think he'll be the Munster captain post-Beirne and I expect him to push on in the Ireland reckoning.

Exactly, his stature is made up for by his guts, look at the Sam discussion around tackling, it ain’t about size it’s mindset. In the mid term I’d back Gunne as the most talented, he’s as pure a 9 as you can get and I think will kick on as Leinster no.2 post Luke’s departure to Perpignan

Gunne is not going to be in the picture. It is a two horse race between Casey and Doak (albeit i don't see a huge amount of Murphy).

They are exceptionally different players though

entirely agree for RWC27 Podge , it’s clearly Casey’s jersey for now though , and in reality game time for 2nd 9 is entirely down to JGP fitness as he’s so far ahead of his competitors and critical for Ireland to be at their best

Casey was awful against Connacht. Was a very worrying performance.

Munster were awful against Connacht, put JGP in there and he'd have been awful too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,018 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

And was brilliant against the Lions. Was a very encouraging performance.

I don’t know if Farrell is a huge fan of either Casey or Doak so Gunne could make a late charge… but only if he improves significantly next season. He will have plenty of opportunities with McGrath gone so it’s not outlandish but he needs to get moving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,057 ✭✭✭johnh6767

Don’t disagree. He showcased very well yesterday on all fronts and with a big step up in game time next year could well put himself in contention which was the point Murray was making in the article as he got his breakthrough back in 2011 on a late run

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 33,942 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Murray never should have been playing in the RWC11 and starting him in the QF was a collosal mistake though. Not one that i think Farrell would have made.

well to be fair he was promoted over Eoin Reddan at the same time for the same game as O’Gara was taking the 10 jersey from Sexton I think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,692 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

Was it O'Leary who was the second choice and his form fell off a cliff at the same time as Murray started playing really well?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 33,942 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

He was potentially first choice (despite Reddan being clearly better) and got an eye injury. Murray was basically a physical like for like replacement but nowhere near ready.

He wasn't playing particualrly well either. Kidney just didnt like Reddan.

O'Leary was the first choice SH in 2009, was picked for the Lions but got a bad injury before the tour, and never came back the same player.

Kidney then kept on picking him over and over and over and over again though even through some really catastrophic form, before finally pulling the plug before the 2011 RWC. I think in Kidney's mind he would have gone into that RWC with TO'L as first choice. TO'L moved to London Irish shortly after that.

I dont see where the meaningful minutes are for an alt to Casey to be looked at as the number 2.

Japan & Fiji are the only 2 that standout.

6nations pre WC is hardly going to merit 2 x 80minutes for someone else...based on this years 6Nations.

One the many abyamal aspects of Kidney's during reign.

I'm still not convinced by Casey. He had a very good game last night, but even then he had some total brainfart moments when under pressure. I'd prefer to see Doak get more minutes in a bid to give him a genuine chance at the backup jersey.

Casey took on a lot of responsibilty in the abscence of Crowley last night. He drove Munster's efforts and led his team well. On the other hand, his interactions with Piardi were confrontational & imo disrespectful. He remains a tad slow to get ball away from breakdown but that's maybe because his ball carriers a tad slow to get into position. I'd like to see him bring that tempo & brio in an Ireland shirt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 891 ✭✭✭darkened_scrum

He got a start against Italy in the 6N where he was also not very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,880 ✭✭✭leakyboots

There's a been a recent groundswell on here against Casey in the past few months, for whatever reason, that wasn't there before. Claiming he's not international class etc, it's bizarre.

Kidneys stock went down after 2011ish. London Irish didnt go well either. If it was more recent alot more would have been made of it. Think it was a bad ankle injury o'leary got and he was never the same after it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,018 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

I mean, no player is very good if you cherry-pick their poor performances…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭TomsOnTheRoof

I mean it's happened with Casey, Crowley, Nash and plenty before them. Even Beirne.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 891 ✭✭✭darkened_scrum

Nice little pity party we have going on here. Beirne is absolute nonsense, everyone knows he's one of our best players. Nash on the other hand is one of the most distinctly average players to play for Ireland in years. He'll probably never win another cap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,225 ✭✭✭TomsOnTheRoof

Beirne is not nonsense. There's a poster on here who was still questioning Beirne's place in matchday squads a year after his Ireland debut. There were also plenty of posters saying Beirne should be on the bench behind Ryan and Henderson, albeit that was early days.

As for a pity party, Casey has been written off by most non Munster supporters on here despite a fantastic performance last night. You yourself couldn't help but mention the Connacht game, probably just wanted to help adjust expectations no doubt. Then there were fellas bringing up Coombes not playing for Ireland last night after someone praised Gleeson. Yet again, I'm sure this was purely constructive criticism.

The mods are constantly having to monitor the Munster thread due to trolling. It seems to get as much attention from other provincial fans as their own provincial threads. It's funny, despite all the Cassandras on here and other online spaces talking gleefully about the struggles of the club ans despite all the schadenfreude it's Munster who are guaranteed Champion's Cup rugby next season while both Connacht and Ulster still don't know if they'll be there or in the Challenge Cup.

Most Munster supporters couldn't give a damn about other provincial fans. We're too busy celebrating a hard fought victory after a tough season. That's pretty much always been the way of it. Last time I checked it wasn't Munster supporters who were crying over not getting support from other provincial fans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,018 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

This just reads ridiculously harshly. Like you never want him to win another cap…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 891 ✭✭✭darkened_scrum

I don't really think it's constructive criticism, no. It's more a reaction to the absolutely endless whining from Munster fans about these sorts of middling Munster players not getting millions of caps. Coombes, Ahern, Hodnett, Farrell, Healy, it just never stops.

This is the Ireland thread and it's a discussion about the Irish SH position. How awful Casey was against Connacht and how thoroughly outplayed he was by two other Irish SHs is relevant I'm afraid, no matter how much you wish it wasn't.

Been very impressed by Jimmy O'Brien in recent months. He's playing well across the back three and I think has done enough to warrant selection in Leinster's Champions Cup Final 23. He's still only 29 too. If he continues playing well I'd like to see him in Ireland squads again.

His biggest issue is that everyone in the Leinster backline appears to have clicked into form at the same time. There's one position open between him, Lowe and Larmour. That's not even accounting for Osborne who probably should start at 12, but I can see Henshaws greater defensive solidity getting him that jersey.
