Past the midway point of May and still lighting the stove and putting the heating on in the evenings. We've been lucky in Wicklow so far with how dry it's been but the cold is starting to bother me. I'm generally not one that cares all too much about temperatures, if it's dry and bright then I'm usually happy, but I would like to at least be able to put away my winter coat and boots by mid May!

The next 3 days look pretty wet, unwelcome as I'm trying to finish a landscaping project, but at least there appears to be some better weather on the way.

I'm just in from the pub. I might be jolly, shall we say, but as I got out of the taxi I wondered at the clear night sky and how vivid the stars were tonight at almost 1:30. After the day and evening we had it doesn't resemble the day earthly. All the constellations and stars clearly visible and not a cloud in sight. Ah maybe I'm just imagining it. 😀

Cloudy days and starry nights at the moment. As for average temperatures during the summer months. If I remember correctly, the night time temps last summer were higher. Yet the day time lower.

Rain last night. More on the way. 5C. Disappointing. Still lighting the stove on a night. Leitrim

This rain, warm sun last week May, will make greenery explode & farm crops will flourish. A very good thing

I’d say at least 50mm is required in eastern areas to make up the soil moisture deficit to get growth going, showery falls of 2 or 3mm are useless.

It's fine if you want to keep culture alive. But this is a weather forum, so I personally stick to the seasons as defined by weather experts such as our national weather service. But each to their own of course. If someone wants to call even April summer, then so be it…

But the average max highs for Ireland, based on decades of data, are

    May 14/15º

    June 1718º

    July 19/20º

    August 19º

    September 17º

    October 14º

Every year, May is usually a lot cooler than all the summer months. Even September.

But the wider point I'm making is that loads of people are complaining about the "bad" start to "summer" as it's been relatively cool (though honestly, not that cool by Irish standards, as Sryan has pointed out). But it's still really only spring, so it's quite normal and there is plenty of time for things to improve.

Indeed, next week, as we head towards the end of spring, things look like warming up a lot.

17th May 2021 - sunny spells and heavy thundery showers, cool, Max temperatures 13C

17th May 2023 - Dry, warm, sunny spells, Max temperatures 20C

    17th May 2024 - Cloudy, dry, humid , Max temperatures 19C

17th May 2025 - Dry, clear sunshine, Max temperatures 21C

I had a look back at the spring 2021 discussion thread following mentioning May that year recently and you can look here yourself. Plenty of posts about the dreadful May 2021 weather.

Comments like turning on the heating as late as May 25th.

We've gotten accustomed to some very mild Mays when it comes to nights since though 2025 was a little cooler with warm days.

May 2021 I believe would have been a top 5 coldest on record if it were not for the final few days when summer conditions finally arrived and 30th May I probably did more than 30k steps raking it in relieved after it being cold for so long.

    Not in Dublin.

In fact, it was almost the opposite

14 days got above 20º last June, 18 days in July, and 20 days in August - all above average. There were a few cools days too of coruse, but that's normal.

Indeed in August, Dublin Airport, one of the cooler locations, had 12 days in a row of temps above 20º.

I think June in his location was rather warm solely because of the nights to be fair. It was one of the warmest on record in that regard. Belmullet's mean max for June 2025 was only 0.3C above average whilst its mean min was 1.5C above average! (These are against the modern 1991-2020 warmer averages).

August was a genuinely warm month everywhere in both max and min, easy to forget that it was a very good August by Ireland standards when it ended quite unsettled starting off the wet spell that would engulf us until mid-April. July had one heat spell (not a heatwave though) and then the rest of it was predominantly mild nights.

Thanks Syranbruen I thought I remembered correctly.

I think it's some form of coping mechanism, many of us convince ourselves during the long autumn/winter stretch every year that once we get to April/May things will get better and we'll nearly be living a Mediterranean lifestyle for 4 or 5 months, then when we inevitably get typical Irish weather we all get grumpy and miserable

Last year (in Dublin at least) was a rare example of a lovely spring followed by a warm pleasant summer but as you say for the most part what we're getting right now is fairly normal, as I listen to hail battering against the windows four weeks from the summer solstice…!

Lashing rain and 8 degrees here in Dublin.

At this stage the warmer weather can't come quick enough.

The only plus about this weekend is it was well forecast so could plan around it and bring the kids to get new shoes, haircuts etc so when nice weather comes we are good to go!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,597 ✭✭✭OldRio

I don't think anyone of a certain age expects Mediterranean weather in this country. Pleasant seasonal weather will do.

Getting lucky in Wicklow with the showers, the direct west to east direction of them means they're mostly breaking over the mountains and aside from 2 quick heavy showers it's been most dry here all day.

I'm not sure where OldRio is. Is it the Midlands?

For Dublin at least, what were the max/mins for summer. Both were above normal, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,597 ✭✭✭OldRio

I'm in Leitrim. I add it to most of my posts. I tend to just comment on the weather I experience. For good or bad.

    Leitrim.

Yes, well above average this direction for both. Warmest on record for Casement and Phoenix Park. I think warmest since 1983 for Dublin Apt.

are we sure this “nice weather” is coming though? Had a look at the Met Eireann forecast for the week and it’s the opposite of nice.

I'm also in Leitrim in Carrick-on-Shannon but heading back up to Dublin on train soon

The latest ECM forecast shows it turning a lot milder from Wednesday onwards.

However, this being Ireland, don’t be expecting wall-to-wall sunshine and there’ll probably still be a few showers around.

But things look like improving a good bit over the coming days, and at present next weekend could be quite warm and dry.

cold, wet and thundery here in Meath, a pig of a day. Have the fire set for this evening. Hopefully once we get the warmer weather towards the end of the week that will be an end of the nightly fires on a regular basis until mid September.

It's freezing here today in Kerry, the rain isn't helping! I have a thick Aran jumper on. Roll on next week.

The past week has been notably cool for the time of year with Mullingar returning an anomaly of at least -2C below the average. This is more exceptional than May as a whole so far (though of course a weekly mean will be more variable than a fortnight or month average).

I’m not sure how that compares to the same time in 2021 but anecdotally, I can recall similarly cool second week to May in 2010. 2010 later became very warm with record temperatures by the 22nd/23rd. People won’t remember but even in the superb May of 2020, the second week was quite cool (moreso at night) with remarkable frosts for the time of year.
