Well what is the opinion of the resident experts on here?

I couldn't see any discussion on it.

Lots online are saying AP have shot themselves in the foot RE brand positioning. I do not see myself camping out for 7 days to get one, but if I had a way to buy one I probably would just for the craic, given the low price.

    "for the craic"

    What craic?

    "The low price"

    Relative to an ap?

You can't really lose if you buy one in the shop. Even if you could only sell it for what you paid, you will have tried yet another new hype collab watch for free, for fun. I'd be confident that is what @1123heavy meant

Might have a look myself if I'm in town over the weekend, but disappointed it is not a wrist watch as such. And very small at 40mm, although that is the case itself, it still clips into the back which probably adds 2mm or so to the size

Somebody might make and sell an aftermarket yoke so you could wear it properly on your wrist?

    My response, yawn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭H_Lime

All just IMHO of course but I would imagine the hype surrounding this is not going to be on par with the moonswatch.

As oisinomalley noted, they were literally leaving the lines queuing when they saw it was, well, whatever it is, which is not a wrist watch.

I'd say guangdong province are already aware of dimensions and are busy with their "special marketing collab" too. That is assuming it's not actually them making it in the first place, which it probably is.

People are queuing and the watch is not for sale for another 3 days? That's crazy. Very few people in their right mind in the western world would spend 3 days and nights to make a potential / optimistic few hundred quid at most. I guess just some hard core influencers / instagrammers left? 😂

I don't get the attraction personally. For me, AP is something you buy for the history, workmanship, exclusivity, etc. whereas this is basically a temu watch with Audemars on it. It's little better than buying a fake Rolex. Maybe worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,076 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Except it is not fake. It is real. Do I think it cheapens the AP brand, like it cheapened the Blancpain and Omega brands? Yes I do. Interesting that this time it wasn't just the $$$$$Swatch group trying to and successfully making a fortune with the highest margin watch in history. This time independent AP is voluntarily participating and the proceeds kinda go to charity

Not sure how AP thinks this will be good for their brand. Things that bad? Are they desperate for attention?

Yep they were/are. Fan boys/flippers speculating on up-votes/profits. I dunno lol, then again I bought a 232 yo coin just there that wasn't inexpensive so I'm sure that's equally mad to some.

I'll buy my youngest a fake when they drop, her peppa pig watch is so last season!

No not fake (at least in the strict sense of the word), AP has authorised it, but fake in the sense that it is an old and storied brand selling out their heritage for, what? I'm not sure. I can't see what AP gets out of it - it's not like lots of the people buying these will get the itch to step up to a €60k Royal Oak because they like the aesthetic. You mentioned Omega and Blancpain, I think this is worse, as AP would have been at a much higher average price point than either of those brands, so has much further to fall. This smacks to me of Jaguar rebrand levels of audience deafness.

I'd wear neither but if I had to (and for similar money) I'd sooner wear this😂

An AP colab? I wonder which of the many famous AP designs will they go with?

Had it of been a wrist watch this probably would have been moonswatch level of success .

Should have gone with Casio rather than Swatch.

All of them have the number 8 and the main colour of either the bezel or the case in the name. Looks like the Romanian one is wrongly spelled though interestingly enough. It is oct not otg

Might have a look in the boutique if I'm in town at the weekend. If either that one or the other one with the small seconds hand and the crown at 3 o'clock is available and there are no massive queues

Quite possibly, and probably done even more damage to AP's brand in the process.

One up on Adverts now for 1200. Some people have neither sense nor shame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,076 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Those ads are bullshit anyway, all over eBay since the day the watches were announced. Nobody has these watches for sale. It is based on the premise that the seller will queue up and get some on Saturday (or has kids doing that for him), which he will then immediately ship. I'm surprised eBay allows this…

Edit: here it is on adverts 😀

    https://www.adverts.ie/casual/swatch-x-ap-royal-pop/40152051

As always, personally I don't mind that sort of thing at all. Someone takes a risk, thinks there is demand. Probably offers a bunch of kids €100 each if they can score one for him. And lots of lazy / rich people who don't want to queue themselves and don't mind paying a few hundred over list. Way of the world. All good. Capitalism is still the best working system for the overwhelming majority of people of a population…

Any signs of queuing on Grafton Street tonight for one tomorrow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 306 ✭✭hhmmm?

People camped out last night and the queue was 100s long. They had 37 in stock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,336 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

So any actual photos of the release yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭H_Lime

Lol, the hype train has arrived empty so.

37 in stock is chefs kiss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,208 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

This is the dumbest product on the watch/clock market since hodinkee travel clock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,076 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Is it really? Aftermarket straps are already popping up (pun intended). The watches are manual wind, unlike the quartz first gen of swatch collabs. These will stop working after about 4 days and thousands and thousands of owners will be new to having a manual wind watch they will have to attend to. I'd say it will bring a lot of fresh blood into our hobby, which, we all have to admit, was fast becoming a preserve for middle aged well to do men…

Take this with a grain of salt as my tongue is in cheek but.....

I think that's a highly optimistic take on overpaying many (many) times the production cost of a plastic watch with a load of hype attached. It reduces the hobby from watches to quick fashion and disposable marketing.

The second the hype evaporates the owners left with the horological equivalent of e waste, fast food or a cold sore from doing bold things to the wrong people. There's no pride of ownership or likely even longevity or wearability to it. It's return on investment is limited only to how long it's hyped. There is zero intrinsic value.

    It's a Swatch, it's not an AP.
